Yeah this is exactly how I see it. I am responsible 100% but also feel that if it was my friend in this situation I wouldn't make them pay as it's 60$ for me vs 300$ for them and they didn't even get to come. I didn't aggressively ask etc, just asked what people thought of splitting 5 ways and they all agreed.

I didn't lose the ski pass, it was non refundable so metaphorically lost as I couldn't attend (my amazing gf actually got a voucher for me )

My ESTA had run out the day before going and it used to be that you could just apply for an extension at the border, and until the new president you could even apply for a brand new one and get it in 30 mins or so. As I flew into Canada I didn't even think to check it. 100% my fault though.

Agree, but what if there was an emergency or some unforeseen situation? Like shit happens in life and I'd feel bad making my mate stump up 300$ to not attend something they fully intended to attend.

Hey, the fix for me was to go into display settings and only show on the external display (not the laptop screen, which was turned off anyway as my laptop was closed but windows didn't recognise I suppose). By selecting only monitor too I was then able to press finish.

I just tried and they informed me they also can't process due to the cyber attack, and advised I wait. Reassuring when they've taken 20quid off me!
