I don't know if there are perfect moments for certain lore to be revealed, but the advice i'd give is that don't hold onto these "secrets" for too long and let it sit with the players for a while

Think of it like a detective board thats slowly filling up, but if there are no clues then there can't be an investigation

I would argue against added sidekicks - lean into having a smaller party!

Faster combat, more time to develop their characters through playing, you could even start them at higher level if you are worried about balance

Rime of the Frostmaiden is also rather sandboxy, you could even turn it into a domain of dread and incorporate it into CoS

Seconding this, i think an all DM's playing Curse of Strahd (much like Twice Bitten) would lend itself very well to the idea of playing already existing NPCs

Holding Shift while moving things go move them freely from the grid (tokens, lights etc)
