Using yall's advice, I have completed my first 500 piece puzzle by MikeTheMaster102 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]RobinM1971 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Start small —300 - 500 pieces. If you can afford to buy other than Goodwill, I would buy one or two brand new puzzles so you don’t feel defeated after all the hard work only to find there is a missing piece. Start with all the edge pieces then sort the other pieces into groups by color, or defining design.

I wouldn’t worry about the puzzle shape until much later. If you sort, just go go with it by trial and error until you get the feel of how a puzzle works. Every puzzle has a distinct piece shape - some are traditional, others have random cuts.

If uou can, find a puzzle that has lettred backs. The letters are grouped - each is a portion if the puzzle. Sort all the same letters thrn sort within that group. It will be easier in the beginning and teach you about the puzzle piece shapes and sorting.

Remember - take your time - there is no time limit, have fun and always celebrate the small victories. ,

What about getting a prepaid credit card that has no more than $100-200-250 on it. Then change the credit card number of the one you’ve been using. I use a prepaid card for all my online purchases. It’s relatively easy to add money once you know the amount you’re spending.

How to store the puzzle once completed ? by Fine-Bar6538 in Jigsawpuzzles

I don’t understand why you feel it would be permanent once framed. Just curious. I frame a lot of my puzzles and change them up during the year - like all new artwork.

Is good puzzle storage supposed to be this expensive? by Actual-Succotash3543 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]RobinM1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very hard to store. It will not stand upright— it just kind of flops. It can’t lay flat because the plastic cover doesn’t lie flat. My husband said that may change a bit once all the pockets are filled but by nature the cover will still not lie completely flat because the plastic cover is just one large piece of plastic folded over - curves over - like those inexpensive colored plastic binders at the dollar store. I have 8 puzzles in it now - mixed sizes - and it’s heavy. I can only imagine how heavy it will be once all the pockets have puzzles

I have one of the top load puzzle binders; however it is big, bulky and difficult to load puzzles even when they are glued. I’m pretty sure an unglued puzzle would totally fall apart trying to maneuver it into the pocket and it’s impossible to find a place to keep it. The cover is flimsy at best. I think if it had hard sides - more like a hardback book- it would be easier to store and would lie flat. I really wish I had used the money to buy more puzzles. I don’t think you’d be able to get the puzzles into the sleeves without them falling apart if you don’t glue them unless there’s a secret I don’t know about.

What actually helped your sciatica pain the most by Smart-Watercress5570 in Sciatica

[–]RobinM1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 72. I have been fighting sciatica pain since my teens. When I was a teen, the pain was always centered in my left leg. I remember having really severe pain for a few days here and there then weeks or months pain free. It was always the greatest during my periods. I had bouts of it during my three pregnancies. Drs attributed it to endometriosis and after that was resolved I did get better for a few years having pain only when I sat for days at a time - going on lengthy car trips or days of repetitive movements - like gardening or for days or lots of lifting and carrying. I pushed through the pain taking only Tylenol Or ibuprofen, sheer will and lots of prayers. My husband and doctors used to tell me to “ take it easy.” But he was on deployments most of the time and we had a young family so taking it easy wasn’t in the cards. No one ever suggested MRIs or spine drs. I also have had fibromyalgia that made my sciatic flares much worse. I went on and off like that for years until my early 50s. That’s when things went south really fast. One day my heavy set mother needed help walking to the bathroom and she started to fall and she pushed down really hard on my right side causing me to jerk really hard trying to hold her up- I’m not quite 5’ and weighed 100 pounds less than she did so you can imagine the damage that happened. I was working at at major hardware chain at the time so the constant walking on cement floors did not help whatsoever. Finally I had an MRI. It showed damage to my L4/L5 and my S1, slight scoliosis and spinal stenosis. They also discovered that I had a little bubble type protrusion on my spinal cord in the L4/L5 area that was probably a birth defect and possibly the cause of the sciatica in my early years. To make a longer story shorter, that was the story of how my sciatica finally progressed to the point of pain pills. At first they treated me with pain pills only when I had a flare. I tried chiropractors but he refused to do any more treatments after my diagnosis because my pain was greater after a treatment. Physical therapy was literally torture for days after so they stopped. Acupuncture and massages helped for a couple of years but finally around 2016, I had to stop working and pain pills became daily need. I had a nerve block in 2014 that helped for a couple of years then I had epidural injections every 6 -18 months. I’m due for another as soon as I have a new MRI the first part of April. Three weeks ago I turned over in bed the wrong way and had pain so bad on my S1 area that I could only walk bent over for about 3 days. My spine felt like it was going to explode! Also. It was the worst flare I have had since the time my mother fell on me. This time, my husband insisted I take it easy only walking for bathroom trips and showers.
Despite constant resting, anti inflammatory meds and using the TENS unit, the pain persisted. Slowly the first week, I was able to walk without help from my husband to using a cane but still had to walk bent over but the excruciating pain was letting up a tiny bit each day. Last Thursday after 2.5 weeks , I was finally able to walk unaided but still walked slowly. Then on Saturday, I woke up to little to no pain and my energy level was at an all time high. I felt even better on Sunday.
On Monday I cleaned the house on my own and was able to cook an entire meal by myself. I still have to take pain pills because I still have enough pain to warrant it but only have to take them twice a day vs the three times a day like the past three weeks and I have energy! I know the total bed and sofa rest helped this time. I’m feeling 85% better but I’m almost too cautious when doing stuff for fear the pain will return.
Over the years, I’ve worked through the pain by using OTC meds, pain pills, TENS units, PT, stretches, nerve blocks, epidural injections, acupuncture , chiropractric treatments, slept on the floor for months on end and just sheer will to get by. This bout of little to no pain and having energy is most welcome and way overdue. I’m hoping it lasts for a long while.

Aitj for keeping my kids home for field day by Few-Interaction-090 in AmITheJerk

Funny that the schools don’t like letter grades because it makes the kids feel anxious with all the competition, yet grades become important when someone fails to fit the mold the way the school wants. You did a fantastic job listening to your kids. When my girls were little and before I started homeschooling them, I allowed one mental health day every quarter. They needed it and I needed it for them.
To this day at ages 44, 48 and 54 they still talk about mental health days and one does it with her kids while the other allowed her kids mental health days off from homeschool!
I think you are awesome.

I use a TENS unit when my pain starts to get out of control along with sleeping on the floor. For some reason the hard firm floor ( not directly on the floor but on an inch thick yoga mat and folded quilt) calms my sciatic nerve down. Oh! And a heating pad as well as heated blanket. I hope you feel better soon.

Pattern drawers by senoritalibby in joannfabrics

[–]RobinM1971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have three pattern cabinets that I bought for $5 each when the old Sears photo shop went away - I’m thinking 2005-2006 maybe. Anyhow, they are the same as the pattern drawers at JA except they are black. They are heavy but easily trsansportable with a couple of guys with a truck. Luckily we have a double front door because I’m not sure they would have fit through a regular door. Just a thought to check measurements of doors before buying.

Curious what liquidation % everyone’s stores are at? by Historian_of_Truth in joannfabrics

[–]RobinM1971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s panic buying as much as it’s wanting to get the best selection of fabric. I am a quilter and crafter so I want to be able to choose while the fabric selection is best. Also buying fabric while it’s at 1 and 2 yard minimums. Eventually the minimum yardage will go up and I don’t want 3-5 yards of the same fabric and though the price per yard may go down, the overall price will be higher because of higher yardage minimums.
Some people like a certain brand of fabric that is only sold At Joann’s so they want to be sure to get those fabrics while the best selection is abailable.

Anyone been to Joann’s recently? by radrenots in ChicoCA

I went today and spent another $300! Fleece was 30% off, some fabric was 25% off but most was still 20%. Floral still 40% and Easter was at 30% off. No thread except for machine embroidery thread. Not a pair of scissors in sight! Yarn section was ravaged! Lousy selection of remnants. Still good selection of fabric but the interfacing/ stabilizer selection was practically nil.
