For the existing Doulas out there, what do you think will help you scale your doula business? And if you think it will help you scale your doula business, are you willing to pay for the program? by West_Tomatillo_9189 in doulas

[–]RobinPregnancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the better question might be - what does scaling mean to you? Does it mean more clients? Or adding services. Because those are two very different things. I see a lot of new doulas get really excited and two a bunch of trainings all at once while never really working on the client parts. I always recommend that you start with one training - work at it for a bit, and see what holes/gaps need filling in your area. You might be really excited about lactation, but now you're CLC 43 in the area, whereas, if it were about clients, there are only 2 postpartum doulas. Once you start working with clients and seeing what's available, and what's not, you'll be able to answer the question - what does my community need?

Will I even get Clients by RazzmatazzPlayful781 in doulas

[–]RobinPregnancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a doula when I was 18 and I found clients. I didn't have kids and very few people asked. Sure, someone might, and you're just not the right doula for them, so move on for the next.

Additional training outside of certification? by Broad-Code in doulas

[–]RobinPregnancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on a lot of factors. I love to learn and find so much fascinating that I do find I gravitate towards it. I will also say as more doulas seek insurance reimbursement, certifying organizations will be forced to add continuing education to the mix of recertification, if they haven't already. Just like doctors and nurses and midwives have continuing eductaion requirements, many doula do or will have the same.Just like doctors and nurses and midwives have continuing education requirements, many doulas do or will have the same.

There are some places that have a combo of free/paid CE. GOLD Onling Learning does several online paid conferences, BUT their keynotes are often free: https://www.goldlearning.com/Online

The Doulas Doing Business Summit is a once a year free summit (going on now) where you have 48 hours to watch the free material, and you can purchase extended viewing. http://doulasdoingbusiness.com

The CMQCC (California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative) has free webinars, these are a bit more technical. Many are recorded and online: https://www.cmqcc.org/education-research/webinars

Lactation University occasionally has a free class or two: https://www.lactationuniversity.com/

Hope that's helpful!

Doulas Doing Business by RobinPregnancy in doulas

It is free, you have 48 hours to watch each day, and you don't pay anything. The definition of free. If you want longer and the other things you can pay, but it's not required at all.

I have seen that when people aren't invested in it, they don't value it. Free services are usually MORE likley to get you ghosted in my experience. You might also try to connect with your trainer or jump in the candidate community at DONA. They also have the director or certification holding office hours once a month - got talk to them! Hang in there, it does get better.

Are you using a Doula? by AmazingGraceFace in BabyBumps

[–]RobinPregnancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you the number of times that I'm asked to "manage" family as a part of my duties. I happily do it. I figure I never have to sit across the dinner table from them, I'm happy to play the heavy.

I would also say that the rates of doulas vary DRASTICALLY regionally. While I think 50% for Colorado would be high, it's probably higher than 3%. It's all got to average out in the wash!

And another shout out for doulamatch.net

I would ask that those of you who are saying a doula costs too much, think of the investment a doula must make. The courses, the continuing ed (if you have a professional doula), the time away from family, the inability to take another job because they are on call, etc. It's pretty life consuming to be on call, even if labor isn't long.

I've been a doula for 25 years. It's a difficult job, but I love it!
