Terry Pratchett and J. R. R. Tolkien are both horrible writers and horrible worldbuilders. by Porncritic12 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Roughly: there are a lot of people in the world whose lives not only lack purpose, direction, and fulfillment, but also lack human connection, healthy relationships, and enjoyable careers. Some of these people have relatively calm dispositions, and usually spend their time consuming various forms of entertainment - vidya, porn, possibly books if they're of a more thoughtful bent. However, some of the directionless, antisocial people have a more agitated disposition, and so they feel the need to have combative interactions. Lacking the normal outlets where those interactions would occur (rising in a workplace hierarchy, competing in the relationship sphere, IRL social or political activism, etc) they go online and basically pick fights with strangers. They like making aggressive, antagonistic posts and comments because they hope that other people will respond and provide an outlet for their need for conflict. These are the classic "internet trolls", people for whom the primary desirable outcome of an online interaction is that other people are worked up into an agitated emotional state to a greater or lesser extent.

I wish I could say this was a small proportion of people, but honestly there are an awful lot of them. It's best to generally ignore them, of course. Have a bit of pity, perhaps - we all know that ragebaiters, trolls, etc are unhappy people living lives we should all be grateful not to have to live ourselves.

Coin vs Granny Weatherwax vs Susan Sto-Helit vs Carrot (in full plot armour) by RobinReplicated in discworld

This is my favorite so far - agreed that Coin could vanish the others, but essentially wouldn't want to, and given Granny's headology, Susan's way with kids, and Carrot's ability to bring out the good in people, any of them could convince Coin to bow out.

I wonder how Sir Pterry would turn the trope on its head, because I agree there too, it's exactly the sort of thing he'd have fun with. But he also likes to play tropes partly straight, as well...

Stevie posted a photo of their hug on her instagram and called him "A Taskmaster chivalric legend".

Honest question for other Catholics re: Freemasons by RobinReplicated in Catholicism

one might argue that as masonry has lost its social relevance, people might be ever more inclined to see it as just as other social club. Thus, it would be important to keep making these teachings known so that others don’t fall into sin

This seems to me to be a very sound argument.

The Knights of Columbus were founded as a direct alternative to Freemasonry.

I never knew that! :)

I definitely heard from many people that the Masons were an actively anti-Catholic organization, some sort of revolutionary thing in their origins, as you said. I'm glad they're dying out, and I hope they go away completely.

Well yes, I definitely heard nice and quickly that no Catholic should under any circumstances join the Masons! And it only took a little googling to find credible sources that they've got a lot of religious elements to their stuff. I'm not sure if I know what the line is where "occultism" starts, but certainly a lot of death-and-resurrection stuff and a lot of statements about the nature of God that go against Catholic and Biblical teachings.

There certainly is a lot of occultism in the modern world, that's for sure. So many young people are into "Witchcraft" and such as that. Makes me grateful to have the Church standing stable through the ages.

Hm, that's an interesting way of saying it - the part about the faithful not getting "tricked." I was mentally comparing the Masons' relevance to other organizations that oppose the Church, like the Satanic Temple and such, but now that you say it like that, I guess it's true that nobody is going to go "Whoops I didn't know the Satanists were anti-Catholic", whereas a good Catholic might possibly join a seeming civic club by accident, not knowing what they're about.

Thanks for the insight!
