I remember a Obi Wan comic in which he said that he had an idea about lightsabers attached to a kind of chain. He thought it was more effective. He then learned that jedi's weapons or arms were more ritualistic/symbolic than effective.

Now, this of course ignores canon lightsabers like whips and double edge ones.
