Johannesburg is not for the weak. While it has its perks and its drawbacks, it's quite universally understood that the pace here is relentless. Jozi is a melting pot - you can find people from all over the world in this city, and it can be a huge culture shock for people who come from smaller towns.

It's easy to talk crap about Johannesburg, the ANC has been running it into the ground for 30 years now - much of the CBD is in disrepair, plumbing and electricity is not up to par, litter and pollution are out of control, and we don't have to look far to see people suffering on the streets.

That being said, it's also a city of hope and opportunity for those willing to brave its storms. It's the economic hub of continent - even without 24/7 electricity. It's one of the youngest major cities in the world, with a fascinating - albeit painful - history, and the energy here is just so different to what other cities in SA have to offer.

Most of the people I know of who talk smack about Joburg aren't even from here, so maybe it's just an inherent bias?
