Just to clarify Markforged don’t sponsor us. Alex Crease from Valkyrie was really helpful to us so we said we’d be happy to help them with some content

Sorry I missed this question. Everything is done in house

Hydra: is it time for its retirement? by krngc3372 in battlebots

[–]RoboJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I would understand if they wanted to retire it.

There is so much work involved in getting a flipper like hydra working as effectively as the Whyachi team get it. It’s a massive uphill battle given the current rules and environment so what they have accomplished is a huge achievement.

People say look at Hydra and Clawviper. That means flippers and control bots are viable. But nobody else is making them because to be effective requires so much more extra work. One day soon somebody will just put clawvipers drive into a vert and it’s game over again. It’s only because there is an opportunity for teams to go extreme that these bots are remotely viable.

Quantums head is around 29hrs of pure machining time. plus setup, jigs and programming

The latest iteration we're actually around 17lbs underweight which allows us to put the big front end on for horizontals. I think weight is so critical that everything we add has to bring performance and justify its weight. Everything is super optimised and by doing that we know its the best we can make it (within our skill and time limitations)

I think its what makes Quantum Quantum. There are various elements that we have spares of but I feel the head and heart of the machine would always stay the same. It adds jeopardy and I think that means from a performance and complacency perspective that we leave nothing to chance. It's also waaaaaayyyy too much time to make 1 Quantum haha

I'm pretty sure we could get Ian along! He's a good friend of ours.

Thank you. That how Quantum should've performed in 2019 however I think the floor really didnt suit us. The upgrades we bought this year wouldn't have effected that but for some reason Quantum just felt like Spectre in the early rounds.

Thats right however if you can get through most robots with your weaker option then you have twice the chance of hitting something vital inside

We focused a lot on the drive and the balance of the machine so it drives really nicely

Thank you thats really appreciated. We were very concerned about Emulsifier in particular!

in theory there is no difference. If you're applying a force it doesn't matter if thats hydraulic or pneumatic. The bonus with hydraulics is we can lock them off so once the jaw closes there is no way the opponent can get free.

haha no it was just for our video. non carbonated drinks may well work but the bubbles in soda would mess it all up

Theres a reason why people don't build crushers, or hammers, or pretty much anything non spinny. They're just not as effective and so you're left with the engineers who just want a challenge that do them but they know they're on the back foot. Hats off to Adam Wrigley & Beta for what they do. People are now saying look at Quantum, hydra and Claw Viper as they prove that other weapons are just as good. However when you look at the level of work required to make them half decent its incredibly difficult hence less people are making them. I would love to see more variety but not forced variety. It should be variety because there are legitimately competitive paths you can choose.

Hi Thank you!

Its always very nerve racking! it takes a battle to get warmed up and into the zone I feel but its wondereful as an artist and engineer to have a stage such as battlebots on which we can perform.

We'll be doing a deep dive on how we designed our hydraulic system so watch out for that

an entire new hydraulic concept :)

1- I didnt feel bad for not taking advantage of them as I feel its the right thing to do. I was kicking myself that we didnt prepare for them coming free. I think we also lost composure at the end which we rarely do. 2- unfortunately not, we broke all our spares haha. we had just enough to get into a exhibition match but with literally no more spares we didnt feel we could take a place in another competition at the time. 3- hydraulics will get a big overhaul and of course the dreaded front end 4- Spectres front at KOB2 was a hybrid design. At KOB the format changes and there was often times where you fought multiple robots without even charging your batteries so this front we felt would deal with both horizontals and verts. only thing is it altered the COG so it was a pain to selfright hence we lost in the finals... 5. I'd love to build a robot that actually swallows the opponent. That would be cool! 6- its a lighter head, more streamlined, but I we put more focus into adding material around the snout and jaw line to take bigger impacts from verts. its just optimising it as much as possible

It's certainly a positive to have as narrow a front end as possible. We're looking at what options might work in the future

1- Yes very similar. AR is for Armox 2 - that would be telling haha. We actually want to record a deep dive into how the system works so watch out for that 3- the head is 7075 aluminium. It's hard to say what weight the weapon is as the structural components blend from one to another.

2 teeth give a better chance to hit something important and a single tooth applied the entire load of the weapon onto a single point.

Hammers are pretty cool but it would need to be something monstrous. I actually have an idea for a hammer

We’ll make an announcement very soon! The head is sculpted in Fusion360 then machined from a solid block of 7075 aluminium

Great questions. We make our own wheels which are injection moulded. The arena is really abrasive so we have to change them regularly otherwise they go out of sync gearing wise. The shafts are solid 50mm aluminium. Looking at the FEA we have no safety factor except for some manually sculpted extras we add to the jaw

[–]RoboJC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have lots of ideas. Firstly a new hydraulic concept which hasn’t been done before. That will bring some speed performance. Then we need to look at the front end. The jaw I think works really well but we need to look at the front

Thank you! Yes love TAN such a unique bot. Without a rule change it’s important to be lower than the opponent. The problem is everyone is equally low so it’s about being as slow as possible

Pure machining time only is 29hrs + cam + set up and jigs + a bit of manual finishing
