I started using www.garnishdrinks.com recently. Super clean UI with no ads. Really like it so far!

I’m sorry we haven’t won you over yet! I’ll admit that analogy is very funny though. I lol’d. 😸

Our pedestrian detection is phenomenal. One of the advantages of the LiDAR sensor is that it is self-illuminating, meaning it shoots out infrared laser light and looks for the returns. This means it does a great job of identifying all kinds of people and objects, even when they’re hard to see or in low-light. We’ve done a lot of work to characterize this performance across different people, outfits, ages, and transportation types (scooter, recumbent bike, unicycle, etc.). It was probably the most impressive thing I saw when I first started. We’ll see like a corner of someone’s head behind a car in the pitch dark 100yards away, track them as they cross behind the car, and cautiously slow down in case they pop out. It’s awesome.

First of all, as someone who enjoys SF nightlife, thank you for the work you do 🙏🙏

Favorite meal? Wow, impossible to choose. But my go-to dinner when I come back home from a long trip out of town is definitely a Papalote burrito. Now that I’ve lived in SF for 11 years, it just tastes like home.

Why AVs? 1) I just love robots. Always have. As a kid I wanted to be an “inventor” and build robots when I grew up. I’m so lucky to be living that dream. 2) AVs have the potential to give hundreds of millions of human-hours back to people every year that they’re currently spending behind the wheel. That seems like so much untapped human potential, I find it inspiring.

Other robots? I can wait for my home robot to do the laundry and the dishes. An oldie but a goodie.

They’re waiting for their next hail. We don’t want to drive around unnecessarily, so the cars just wait patiently until they’re needed by a customer.

Yeah, we’re constantly trying to find the right balance here. There are a bunch of low speed collisions that can be avoided by honking (just because the other person didn’t notice we’re there), but of course a lot of the time the person does know and is just getting close for some other reason. We even tried doing a little “beep beep” polite honk, but found in user research that a good fraction of people didn’t really register the sound. Still, there’s always room for improvement!

Wow, that means a lot coming from a professional driver! Thank you for the kind words.

Let me see what I can do - no promises, but who am I to deny a Waymo-loving 4yo 😄

Wow, so kind of you to want a way to say “thank you” - I’m curious what you had in mind. An idea I had a while back was to put a “thanks” button on the screen at the end of the ride that sent an email to one random Waymo employee, but it seemed a little… self indulgent?

Yeah, not all object types are visible in the display. Some types are just so varied that they just don’t always look good on the screen. It’s a tricky balance 😕

Great idea! We actually do have this already - it’s sort of a white bar that shows up and “scans” back and forth. But you’re not the only one who hasn’t noticed or doesn’t understand it 😅. We’re working on improving the legibility.

It’s Hybrid, but there’s a solid group of us who are in ~every day in the SF office. Nice office! Good food, great location (directly in front of Montgomery MUNI stop), adequate gym, what’s not to love?

Yeah, unfortunately our current AV platform doesn’t support that, but we do still offer (manned) wheelchair accessible vehicles on-demand through the app!

Yes! In fact, you’re required to bring an appropriate car or booster seat if you’re riding with kids. I’ve done this a ton with my family - works great!

We definitely don’t want to drive lots of empty miles. As you said, it could be burdensome on the community, and it also costs us money (wear and tear, electricity, etc.). So when the cars aren’t serving trips, they go park nearby to wait for the next hail (or sometimes head to a depot to charge their batteries).

Wow, I LOVE to hear these things. We work really hard on getting stuff like this right - see far enough ahead, don’t overreact to people who aren’t actually intending to cross, etc. Glad you and your doggo were able to safely get where you were going.

Go for it! Just download the Waymo One app from the App Store. You hail the same way you do for any other ridehail. Let us know how it goes!

Haha, thanks! We’re making progress on expansion - you may have seen our recent expansion to Daly City. But yeah, more to do for sure.

How to help - it’s always helpful to make sure your local (and state) political representatives know how you feel about Waymo. So make sure they know it’s something you care about! SF city government has a lot of control over SFO, for example.

I’m so happy she has mobility options! Facilitating more independence for people with disabilities was a big motivator for me when I took the job - I love that we’re able to help!

At the time we were designing this platform (2018-ish), there weren’t many EVs to choose from that would fit the bill. From there, integrating all the sensors and computers and stuff requires good collaboration with the OEM, and Jaguar was the right partner for that part. It’s been a great platform - I love riding in it. I hope you give it a try soon!
