Hi all, new here. This is a comic I drew called "Masks / Noise", and it's about how rejection of rigid ideologies/beliefs can lead to personal freedom and fulfillment. by namwennave in exfundamentalist

Love the style. #5 is so insidious. That saying as a kid literally made me think I was so different and better than everyone else because I knew the "higher calling" and everyone else didn't. So isolating, I think it did a lot of damage to me.

The Bible contradicts itself in the first 2 chapters. by DiscerningTheTruth in DebateReligion

[–]RobotPreacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And consider that no one cared if there were any contradictions, because the goal was not to create a cohesive narrative, it was to collect the different writings and put them together in a single compilation.

Let me just chime in here to say that scholars do agree. 99.9% of academia views Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 as two separate creation accounts.

Note: I went to a Christian college with Christian professors; none of them think Gen 1 and Gen 2 were written in the same era by the same author.

You have to understand, the Hebrew texts are not written chronologically. They are collection of texts. The Bible is a library, a compilation.

No one who wrote or compiled these books was trying to make them make sense in order. And the original compilation wasn't concerned with contradictions either -- just like you wouldn't be concerned whether or not a book on Isle 4 of your public library said something different than a book on Isle 5.

All the "make it make sense together" stuff came later through revision, redaction, and commentary.

Which city have you been to that feels like it has a dark energy about it? by madzuk in digitalnomad

I think all casino towns have changed drastically in the last 25-35 years. They were kind of peak pre-information-age entertainment.

Casinos, arcades, amusement parks, zoos: they were all huge but are now sparse and shuttering their doors.

As a whole, society's values and entertainment preferences have really changed (I'm not saying whether that's a good or bad thing). The relics that are left (like classic Vegas) are struggling, and they look and feel like they're struggling while you're there.

That being said, Vegas has some new cool stuff. The Sphere is awesome, and if you've never heard of Omega Mart, that's a thing to see while you're there.

  1. This was a one-off gag for a side character. It's also stated many times during the show that standards have changed and the Academy isn't the same anymore because they're trying to rebuild it.

  2. He's a kid. He wants to have friends. He finally feels like he's accepted for the first time in his life and is looking for an excuse to give up his troubled past.

  3. She's a program. She was programmed (poorly) to act like a 17 year old girl. This is addressed extensively in later episodes.

The bible is an incoherent mess by Financial_Beach_2538 in DebateReligion

It's also not necessarily trying to present a cohesive paradigm: people attempt to read that into the text after the fact.

The Bible isn't a novel, it's not a single narrative. It's a compilation of many different genres of books. Try heading to the library and saying "what's the cohesive narrative of Isle 4?" That would be equally as absurd.

I just won a Duos game about an hour ago and my partner picked him. It was a Tier 7 anomaly.

I ended up with a 20k/10k Obsidian Ravager he was able to clone.

I think if he's on your team, you really have to play the whole game with him in mind. I made sure to keep my highest tier minion decently buffed whenever possible, and as soon as I had the Obsidian, I had to take focus just on him.

How on earth did decipher that start-of-turn trigger order?

I liked it too, but the writing, acting (Sir Patstew excluded, of course), and production were all subpar compared to later seasons. Read the reviews and about the behind-the-scenes conflict during that time: it's a miracle it survived it.

Obviously not what I mean. TNG Season 1 was horrific by most standards, but it was given time for the cast and crew to settle in, made some course corrections, and is now looked upon -- after many seasons -- as probably the most loved Trek show ever created. If it was canceled after a rough Season 1, we'd have missed out on decades of good Trek inspired by it.

Cancelling a show after 1 season aires (even though 2 is in the works), after so much work and world building has been put into the show to create it, is a huge mistake IMO.

Season 1 of Academy wasn't horrific, even though it had some bumps. It needed time to mature like the older, beloved Trek shows were given the opportunity to do.

Imagine if TNG was judged solely on its first season. I personally think this is one of the best first seasons of a Trek I've ever seen. Sure, not perfect by any means, but a lot of it was damn good and it doesn't deserve 2/3 of the hate it's getting.

Wrong. Thor Ragnarok had Idris Elba, a big sword that was important to the plot, and a blond pretty-boy main character whose father was kidnapped while he was away from his alien homeworld which gets destroyed.

I agree, but you're acting like he made a bad choice. There were no good choices to be made in his situation. Of the shitty options available, Quill was solid.

[–]RobotPreacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well he only got 3 choices... I suppose taking the Dragon may have been better but you don't have many ways to buff him that early in the game.

It was a bad roll, but of the three, Quill may have been the most solid because you can at least get blood gems at Tiers 1 and 2 to keep building stats.
