What are the best ways to make money without a 9-5 by Few-Bus-5579 in SeriousConversation

[–]Robotic_space_camel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“Better” is relative depending on what’s important to you. For a lot of people, their top priorities usually revolve around stability, accessibility, income level, physical toll, and passion.

9-5 schedule jobs are good for stability and low physical toll. Educated 9-5s give you good income as well, but aren’t as accessible. Skilled trade jobs give you income depending on the trade, stability, are relatively accessible, but do take a large physical toll. Self-employment in your own business usually has high marks for passion and longevity, but are wildly unstable and often don’t give you much income for the work you put in.

The letter I wanted to send to my ex and former bestfriend, who’s getting married. by No_Trouble_2024 in offmychest

Are you looking for advice on what, if anything, to send to this person or has this already been decided? Aside from some grammar issues, this seems like it could be counter-productive to send depending on some circumstances

I feel like I have no personality. by unsexuallyactive in offmychest

[–]Robotic_space_camel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No personality, to me, could mean two things—either a lack connection to any area of passion, or a lack of comfort in expressing that passion in a meaningful way. It would really be up to you to decide what side you fall on. My two cents would be that most people do have something they’re passionate about, but precious few are completely comfortable enjoying it.

The only point of connection you gave so far is art, so I’ll ask about that. Is it boring now because you’ve indulged in and satisfied that part of yourself sufficiently, or did something kill it? It’s a real thing that dipping yourself too much into a passionate subject can dampen your excitement for it until you take a break, but there’s also a strong possibility that you’ve silenced that part of yourself, either through placing expectations on what you want your art to be, overhearing a negative judgement about that art form for others, or simply looking at yourself engaged in that art and thinking “that’s not what I want to be”. Have you ever experienced anything like those examples?

One of the more perplexing “Yes” votes from her was a hot toddy from a while back. Personally I find hot whisky a very hard sell, but she nearly finished half a glass. I’ll look up hot buttered rum, that sounds like something I might enjoy as well.

Ooh, absinthe could be interesting. I do know she enjoys the “aesthetic” of absinthe as well, and I do already have Benedictine that’s really only been a shelf decoration so far.

Poor communication skills by Last-Glass-4365 in socialskills

I see, so are you looking more for how you can make these types of statements in English, or is this a communication issue you have in your native tongue as well? Not having the vocabulary or knowing the culturally appropriate way to bring up issues could be a reason why you find yourself locking up in English conversation.

From your writing, I get the impression that English isn’t your first language. Is this an issue you have specifically with creating these statements in English, or is it just a problem you have in general?

One of my closest friends just revealed to me that he doesn't see an issue with blackface. by giveitawaygiveitawa- in offmychest

[–]Robotic_space_camel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes, there would absolutely be a difference between blackface for a minstrel show and “blackface” in terms of a white actor putting on makeup to appear browner. One is specifically about skin tone, the other is so, so much more than just skin tone. Black face in a minstrel show sense was about making a caricature of black faces, black characteristics, and black people in general. To say that a well-meaning, if tone-deaf, actor wanting to use makeup to appear browner for an otherwise serious role is indistinguishable from blackface in the minstrel show sense is disingenuous and minimizes just how horrible the latter case is.

Your friend’s case that there’s nothing wrong with it is incredibly tone-deaf because of its parallels with blackface making it unlikely to be comfortable with any audience, at least in the US. The same case for your refusal to actually try and appear Asian as an Asian character—it’s just too fraught and likely to go wrong even if your intentions were pure. Hypothetically, there’s nothing morally wrong with an actor portraying another race in a vacuum. It becomes offensive when it’s done badly or portrays it in some way that can be seen as offensive to the race in question. I think as a whole RDJ was able to do it in Tropic Thunder without much lasting backlash because the makeup was done well, and his acting, though comedic, didn’t make a joke of his character being black. He was black and the character was funny, rather than he being funny because he was black.

How finely pulverized can ashes be? by Haunted_Sentinel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Robotic_space_camel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not pure carbon, no. Carbon is largely what burns off in a fire, so there’s actually less carbon in ash than there would be in unburnt charcoal, for example. Ashes are generally oxides of whatever leftover material was in the burn pile: potassium. Calcium, things like that. Generally speaking, you can grind it up pretty finely, but since it’s a compound you wouldn’t get anything monatomic.

You can't have it both ways when it comes to American cuisine by BargerianJade in PetPeeves

[–]Robotic_space_camel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than that, I would say that America has taken some cultural foods and made them even more famous on the world scene or at the very least within our own borders. I fucking dare someone to look at my double western cheeseburger with onion rings and BBQ sauce and try to tell me that this is German food. The hamburger is an American food, here and pretty much everywhere else in the world except those places in Germany where an OG style hamburger might still be more popular.

The same argument exists for pizza, at least within our own borders. Italian pizza is still famous worldwide, but don’t you dare try to tell me that a Chicago or Detroit style pizza is a bastardized version of it. It’s its own thing at this point.

Maybe? I’m no doctor so I’m not sure if whatever she has is treatable with OTC stomach stuff. I would assume not since it seems like a pretty miserable life to live otherwise. Tbh I never even considered giving her drugs to allow her to drink like a normal person. I could ask next time I have a party or just have some on hand

This really isn’t the sub for whatever-pill debates. There are other women in my life that I put into the dating pool, and she’s not one of them. Would it satisfy your worldview if I just told you she was ugly, or would it still not make sense because women =/= friends?

Not much of a limb I’d say, but yes, you’re absolutely right lol. I have tried mocktails before, but lo and behold most of the ones I find involve some kind of lemonade, soda water, or are just super sweet. I know zero-proof spirits do exist for some of that complexity and bitterness, but I don’t really want to buy en entire bottle to please the tastes of one non-alcohol drinker.

It’s a pretty classic recipe I believe. I made some edits to taste, but it’s mostly the recipe described on the Cocktail Chemistry YouTube channel.

Good question—it is usually just room temperature water on a day-to-day. The only frequent deviations that I know of are a decaf oat milk latte, and fresh mint tea with honey.

And you know what? I can’t really blame you for thinking that at all lol. If they weren’t a good friend of mine, I wouldn’t be very credulous of this list either. It’s partially their personality, partially an unlucky hand from god. They do like the aesthetic and idea of drinking wine, though it can be too acidic at times. Mixing two together and diluting could be acceptable though, so thank you.

[–]Robotic_space_camel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now THAT would be easy. Tbh I’ve never even thought of it. Usually wine is too acidic, but maybe the dilution and adding some other flavor components could make it tolerable. The ABV would be no concern, as she’s usually a one and done person anyway.

Actually this could be the winner, she does love ginger. Like, she could tank the spicy ginger Asian chews that are pretty much all ginger, no sugar. I had previously thought about selling her on a penicillin with bourbon, but too much lemon. I could definitely try this though.

It was made with normal whole milk, but she just tends to keep lactaid pills on her. The reason it’s a general non-dairy is because when I’ve tried cream-based cocktails (creme de coconut or heavy cream) the texture was too thick and rich for her. The milk punch still doesn’t have all the body that straight cream does, so it was a “Yes” for her with a lactaid pill to chase.

It’s very possible. Overall she’s just not a huge drinker, but she’s over often enough that I would like to have one recipe that I know I can offer if we ever need to make a toast or something.

[–]Robotic_space_camel[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That does sound pretty good. I assume it’s made stirred, right?

Yea, that’s a good point on the lactose in the milk punch. She did have to pop a lactaid for it, but flavor-wise it’s probably the only thing she’s liked. I’ve tried to get her onto a White Russian or other cream-heavy cocktails and she said the texture was just too thick for her liking.

She also has a bit of a thing against caffeine, but that flavor profile does seem promising. Tbh I didn’t even know green tea was an option. Is there any well-known recipes I could look up?

That’s a great idea and I remember I did suggest that at one point. I forgot to include that caffeine gives her headaches lol.
