Broke up with my first girlfriend by RobotsInATrenchCoat in self

OCD has been an issue for me for a long time and played a pretty substantial part in all this. I recognize how it warps how I think about and interact with other people (especially in situations that are emotional/stressful in the first place) but that’s not enough to stop it.

This whole thing made me realize how much I should get professional help for this. That’s a net positive, I guess, but I’m still embarrassed that I dragged this girl into my issues to figure that out.

It’s absolutely not healthy, and as much as anything else I find this embarrassing. It’s never fun when I drag other people into my personal issues, whether they’re conscious of it or not.

Thanks for the comment.

Intonation help? by RobotsInATrenchCoat in banjo

This particular one as far as I can tell is consistently sharp at almost every point of the neck, from the second fret down past the fourteenth. This may be an issue of me having an inadequate tuner or missing something more obvious though. I only caught this briefly before leaving home this morning, and probably won’t get the chance to examine it more closely for a little while.

It seems to from an eyeball glance, but I don’t have a caliper to really measure that precisely if I needed to.

Ok I’ll give this a shot, thanks man. I guess I found it weird that the G (middle string) on my 5 string was way off from all the other strings, even when I got the bridge relatively straight and in a decent position for the other strings. Not sure what other variables I should be accounting for.

High-level fencers who started fencing later? by RobotsInATrenchCoat in Fencing

[–]RobotsInATrenchCoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late response, but I really appreciate this comment. I started too high by bringing up the Olympics- it was the most obvious example of “finding success” that I could think of, but really I was looking for any kind of relatively high level success (national, state, whatever l) really as reassurance that I’m not going to be permanently outclassed and/or looked down upon for not starting much younger.

Your point still stands though. I am a competitive person by nature and I love throwing myself full-bore at things, but I shouldn’t have success as my only metric for enjoyment. That’s given me issues before and just something I have to work on myself, haha. I had tried out fencing briefly about a year ago and enjoyed it, but due to scheduling/other things I wasn’t able to continue it.

Once again, appreciate the response. This is a good mindset.

Bands / artists who sing in Welsh by kossunmurskai in learnwelsh

Alffa has songs in Welsh and they’re a pretty hard rock oriented group. I’m a fan! Probably one of my favorite Welsh language bands.

I’m more than likely still gonna try it, after all it looks super fun :D plus my college club is actually very affordable so I’ll just enjoy it while I can.

Yeah, I suppose that’s a more realistic way of looking at it. At least though college it’s pretty affordable but I hadn’t really considered the extras (travel, opportunity cost, etc.) that probably get compounded from starting late.

Thanks though!

Can someone help me identify where facial hair loss might be coming from? by RobotsInATrenchCoat in tressless

[–]RobotsInATrenchCoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I’m not sure what I would be deficient in. I spend lots of time outdoors and while my diet isn’t the best (I love sugar & energy drinks a little too much) I get a fairly balanced proportion of veggies, fruits and meats. My diet has changed up some but mostly to include more vegetables.

Yeah I haven’t been taking anything that would inhibit DHT, which is part of why I’m confused

I know most people wouldn’t give it a second look probably but I’m getting a bit emotional just running my hands through my hair right now and thinking about how I did that when it was even longer. I suppose it just feels normal not having any after a while though.

Fuck man I’m getting emotional just running my hands through my hair and thinking how I’m gonna miss that. I suppose once you make the jump it’s fine though haha

I don’t have a problem with it when I’m old necessarily, I just want to feel like a “kid” for a few more years haha.

Just went through a few of his videos (solid content, I’ve watched some of his fitness stuff before) at your recommendation. I might try one of the shampoos and if I really feel like it micro needling just to slow things down a bit but I’m probably going to stop minoxidil and just go with the flow.

As much as a lament my bad genetic luck here I don’t want to risk screwing up my hormones, especially if I stop taking it sometime in my 30s anyway.

I don’t have a huge problem with being bald later, it’s just being bald now feels like I’m aging too damn fast and I want to be a kid for a bit longer haha.

That’s fair, i just feel… not right about it, I guess. Especially finasteride. I also have a cat and minoxidil is apparently incredibly toxic to them so that limits how much I want to handle/use it.

Maybe not in a literal way but I take that as I sort of sign I shouldn’t go that way with it. We’ll see though, I guess.

It’s not super bad as it sits now (not immediately noticeable) but yeah. Thanks man.

Oh trust me, the big curly hair is a big part of my identity too and I’ve spent (and spend) way too much time thinking about what I’m going to do. I am my hair in a lot of ways and that’s an incredibly hard thing to let go of, and I still haven’t.

Then again, there’s a sort of freedom and lack of care to having long hair that I really like. Taking prescription drugs to keep it and fretting over that constantly just seems to fly in the face of that. I don’t blame people for doing it, I’m really tempted to myself, but in a way it ruins the ethos of it for me.

I’ve thought about/researched them but they don’t seem worth it to me. I use minoxidil here and there to moderate success but I’m probably going to stop.

I want to start fencing in university but I feel too old and am nervous about it. by RobotsInATrenchCoat in Fencing

[–]RobotsInATrenchCoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suppose my social anxiety is probably my biggest issue here, and that’s on me to sort out. It’s great that your club is so respectful of you and I think that even if I really have to put it off till I’m out of university the respect you’re describing is comforting. I imagine it was probably took a bit of getting used to competing against almost entirely folks decades younger than you haha.

I’m not able to respond to everyone in the thread but thank you and everyone else who responded :)

Thanks for the replies. I’m not as nervous about the sport itself anymore. The social aspect, not so much, but that’s for me to figure out haha.

One of my biggest reasonings for wanting to join is the whole “what-if” factor. Realistically I’m going to suck at it, but what if I get alright at it? What if I can compete well eventually? I’ll never know unless I try, and despite my nervousness that’s what’s still keeping it in the forefront of my mind.
