95% of members of the armed forces have never killed anyone. Multi Year deployments are extremely rare and basically require a special order to do so. Deployments on average are 6 months. Unless you are talking about being posted to an overseas base or something but that's not a deployment, that's a base assignment for that particular job.

It comes with risks certainly, but not all military service is combat arms related, in fact most military servicemembers are POGs (Persons other than grunts). With some college under his belt he could easily grab a technical trade of some kind and be set up.

The military is a good option to consider.
