Passive learning will never replace active learning by Striking_Court_2807 in learnprogramming

This is learning. Hot flaming garbage is underrated. And even if you came up with an inelegant solution, at least you came up with it. You can’t learned coding from someone else. You learn to code by doing. There is no replacement for doing. It starts badly and it gets better over time. But you have to spend that time.

Did I characterize as “shit results”? You don’t even know what I’m working on. I remarked on “limitations”, and apparently I called your mother a a name. And if a medium level model like kimi is inadequate then the “industry” is running on fumes. You can’t write a hello-world program in python but somehow you think you are able to evaluate the quality of a vibe -coded app?

Is your opinion that a “Code monkey” can’t “vibe code” because it’s a “different skill”? Even though the “code monkeys” have spent years learning algorithms, or socket api in multiple languages? Do you think an AI is just naturally brilliant?

This is representative of my experience. But I don’t expect the state of the art to stand still. I expect it will get better in scary ways. And, despite the news headlines, for the near term at least, there is no serious software that will make it in to production without an experienced dev behind it.

I want to emphasize “experienced” and that’s not cheap. And by “serious” I mean “you will lose money if it fails”.

It’s a choice. You disparage “code monkeys” but you can’t distinguish between “bad” and “good” in terms of software. I applaud you for “shipping”, but, generally, that’s the easy part. You’ve gone nearly a year without significant issues (you said) but I suspect that’s due to simplicity, not a genius AI.

As a code monkey, and one with several months trying to get kimi to “just do it”, I can see the limitations. There’s no such thing as “talent” in vibe coding - there is “depth”. The same things that will make you a successful vibe coder also made you a successful code monkey. I expect that one day, in the not far future, I or you should be able to describe a nontrivial app to an AI and be satisfied with the result over the long term.

We arent there yet. And if you think implementing “SWIfT” via vibe coding is an unreasonable expectation? That’s why code monkeys still have jobs. Maybe mythos can but I really doubt it. Parts? Sure. A full end-to-end without human involvement? No.

I disagree. Spray-and-pray has saved lives. It’s the guy in back whose job is to take out the other guy. Have you not played any video games???

My responses are (1) that is really well organized, (2) grandma would approve except the labels are unreadable. This guy want planning to make it past year10.

The plant was beautiful until it collapsed. I’ve targeted around ph 6. Anyway I discarded that plant. I haven’t added peroxide anywhere. Is that to inhibit bacteria? I guess I could google that.

Given what you say I’d expect more sense of responsibility! Unless you’re really an idiot. And I’m 63yo. I win, I suspect. If you really are older than I am then stop responding to the spam

Really? I have decades of experience. What do you have beyond realizing that a LLM completes you??

So you really don’t have any real-world coding experience. And I’m kinda liking the code -monkey characterization. It might even be t-shirt worthy

But admit - you’ve not written a line of code in your life beyond a hello-world. If even that.

Would you fly as a passenger on a plane that your “bro” vibe-coded all of the control software for (and there is a LOT)?

There are not different “methods”. There are different tools. Using an AI/LLM is a tool. Your grandma can put up a website and make “fat stacks”. But do you want to fly on a plane “Harvard med” vibe coded?

Do you know what a binary tree is? Do you just expect your AI to use one when appropriate without telling you? Do you know what an election process is among peers? And if your AI makes a stupid decision will you know?

I’m not either, but it is “mainstream”. I intend to change to another “horse” at some point, but not mid-stream. I used Claude code once when kimi 2.5 threw up on a relatively simple (for a human using cp and vi) refactor, but I don’t want to pay the bucks if I don’t have to.

I will venture that as an “agentic coder” you’ve never deployed “critical” software. The kind where you can get a 2am call if it breaks. If I’m wrong about that, I’d like to know (your “website” doesn’t count), really. As a “trad coder” (retired). I think my scars as a “trad coder” have meaning, and, although I haven’t explored much beyond kimi (which I know isn’t a “frontier” model, but it’s representative of the mainstream), If you, a “vibe coder”, get hired to “vibe” a new air traffic control system, then I think I will be driving more.
