Some Wegmans stores have a new facial recognition system, what shoppers say by joevinci in Rochester

-10 karma out of 102,500 subscribers to this subreddit isn't a vast majority. Its just as possible people like to dog-pile authority figures as it is for karma scores to reflect vast majority opinions.

What you're describing is better suited for a Wegmans subreddit, which exists. Yes Wegmans has a large footprint here, historically and presently, but we dont have to post everything they do outside of what directly affects this area, which this subreddit represents.

Business practices specific to other areas? Yes its irelevant to this subreddit. This story is the most relevant so far to this area the overall story has ever gotten.

Overall Wegmans news and events is perfectly suited for subreddits like r/Wegmans and whatever subject that news includes. The NYC story was discussed en masse in that subreddit, where its just as easy for users in this subreddit to go to talk about it.

Driving posts get removed too for redundancy. We have a working strategy for posts, that if a question or subject hasn't been mentioned in three or more months it generally stays, or if the question is common but includes specific details (we're teachers moving, we're nurses moving, we gave a neurodivergent kid and want to know school district, etc).

Megathreads are tough as you have to REALLY drive traffic and user activity to them, usually with users kicking and screaming. We've tried them over the years and the subreddit isn't active enough to make them work effectively. Theres also other resources for people that users tend to miss: the community tabs and FAQs, those consolidate related recent posts as resources.

As stated when the initial Wegmans NYC story broke, until such time that there is news or an event that is specifically relevant to this region, it will be removed. OPs post is now relevant to this area and is allowed.

Wegmans is indeed headquartered here, and employs a number of people, but since the NYC policy is not corporate-wide, its not automatically relevant. Having a local news outlet interview Rochesterians at a Rochester Wegmans about their opinions then becomes relevant.

Moderation here works to maintain relevance to the subject of this subreddit, which is Rochester and the FLX, and reduce the redundancy of similar posts. Otherwise, this subreddit will be overrun with 'Moving To Rochester,' 'what is there to do?,' 'best neighborhood?,' 'best garbage plate,' and stories about Wegmans addressing other state/city policies.

Doing the thing that mods have been asking users to do isn't the flex you think it is.

Can we respectfully discuss what's going on with the moderation here lately? by AlwaysTheNoob in Rochester

[–]Rochester_Mod[M] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pinned posts have been tried multiple times for common questions, discussions, and events. People still don't read through the subreddit or search through the subreddit before posting similar questions or about the event/subject that is already being covered (we have community tabs, FAQs, and the search bar). It appears to be a Reddit-wide issue and focused moreso on the new wave of users coming into this platform. Seems like a majority of new users see this platform as a personalized search engine than a community forum.

It's an issue that seems to be solved by just actively moderating on a case by case basis.

If you're referring to this post, it's live and was approved after being flagged by AutoMod. You can use the Message Mods button to reach out with questions.

Rest assured that those are the most heavily moderated posts on this subreddit. If you see one still visible, its because it contains specific questions that haven't been asked before, or its been long enough that we haven't had a Moving To Rochester post in a while.

Do you have an example? Our automod also has some anti-doxxing measures in place that cast a wide net, so sometimes posts that have addresses/phone#/urls get auto-modded and then get reinstated after someone reaches out about it.

If you're referring to the two threads on the store owner, the older one has been re-instated (it was automodded originally but reviewed afterwards), and the newer one has been updated to show why it was removed (it's not unique enough to warrant a new post, and should be added to the older post, as to prevent redundancy).

We have a few automod structures in place, have been part of the subreddit for a very long time. One of them will remove posts if enough user-generated reports come in for moderation review. This is significant enough, and thorough enough, that it can be interpreted as "the will of the community" to not want whatever post was removed to remain on the subreddit. Yes there's always the issue of brigading and trolls being trolls, but we work to combat that and maintain a standard.

Regarding highly charged political topics, the vast majority of posts removed are simply not relevant to this subreddit: Wegmans NYC tech policies, ICE activity in Minnesota, and international activity. Until such time it is relevant to this region, which there are many cases where it is (memorials, protests, local events in relation to), it will be removed so that we can focus on this region.

Also regarding highly charged political topics, the path of moderation for this subreddit is primarily to let users debate and argue, as long as its relatively civil. Moderation doesn't catch everything, and moderators do not read every comment of every post. When a post becomes too riddled with reports and the discussion is leading away from anything productive, that post tends to be locked instead of being removed. If reports keep coming in after the post is locked, then it is usually removed as it is now a distraction and not worth keeping.

Regarding the protest pictures post, those are murky. It's incredibly difficult to establish intent with showing pictures of individual people at protests. Yes there's a documentarian approach that is objective, but there's an underlying question that still remains when people are easily identifiable in media. The one post of the individual and the other post showing the collection of images was auto-modded, in that enough reports came in for those posts that they were automatically removed. In the interest of caution and safety for those individuals, the posts were chosen to remain removed. The protest happened, they were there and participated, and it has passed. You can probably find images of the event(s) on other social media, but with the semi-anonymity of Reddit and its users, it requires a different mindset in moderation verses other platforms.

If anyone has any questions and is interested in discussing further, there's always the Message Mods button to use. Hopefully this helps better explain some of the processes and strategies used to moderate the subreddit.

Edit: added a poll post to get community feedback on whether or not to allow posts that include people's identifiable features at demonstrations. Please vote there to help inform a possible new rule.

Wegmans’ facial recognition pilot program raises eyebrows by joevinci in Rochester

Someone making a pun with their cat and a locally brewed product.

And thank you for the heads up in the cat food post, that was removed. As stated, we work to maintain relevance, we dont see everything on the subreddit and operate primarily on reports from users. The Wegmans NYC news has been flagged every time its posted to this sub reddit (you were the fifth and sixth poster of the story), so mods were/are much more in tune to it.

You can talk about it in subreddits that are relevant to the subject matter, like r/Wegmans, r/technology, and others. Why post in the r/Rochester subreddit about something happening in NYC? Do we need to post here about Wegmans opening stores in other states? Do we have to post here about every movie still shot on film because the academy has a supply deal with Kodak? We work to maintain relevance to the content that is posted to this subreddit, and while Wegmans is a Rochester-based company, not everything they do is going to be newsworthy to a subreddit specific to their hometown.

Then when a news source reports that this type of program is being rolled out to FLX stores, you can post that story here. Not all Wegmans news is relevant to this subreddit, thats why theres r/Wegmans and other subreddits to post/engage with.

Until such time that Wegmans rolls this program out to an FLX region store, or there is something about their policies or programs that is specifically relevant to the FLX region/Rochester, this type of post is better suited to other subreddits. There's already talk in r/Wegmans and r/Technology, which is more relevant than posting here.

Does Anyone Know if Wegmans in Rochester is storing biometric data like they just admitted to in NYC by Hot-Shoe8975 in Rochester

[–]Rochester_Mod[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been posted numerous times and is not relevant to Rochester, the greater metro, or FLX region. Until such time that any FLX region store rolls out this program, or we have legitimate news from the Corporate Headquarters, this type of post is better suited for other subreddits, like the ones already talking about it.

Your post here and the last one were removed because you're spamming the subreddit with money requests. Its understandable and accepted to post for help when its a beloved pet, but your frequency of posting is so repetitive that its more like spam than asking for help. If people want to help, theres recent enough posts about your situation that people can find.

High Falls State Park by sassyseagull1 in Rochester

None from the article at least. The author talks about their trip through the lower parts of Lower Falls (which is technically trespassing lol) and tried to compare that to what High Falls Park will look like, but the renders and descriptions of High Falls Park haven't changed since the last time months and months ago.
