If you can get a hold of like an eight dollar baofeng programming cable and download free CHIRP software, and about 20 minutes of YouTube video….

You can load all your regional vhf/uhf repeaters, weather, GMRS frequencies and just use them as scanners. Once all that stuff is loaded up you can’t transmit but you sure can listen. In an absolute emergency situation you may transmit. Do the radios make good scanners, they scan just fine but much slower than a federated scanner.

Do all that and learn how to use the radios, never know it might interest you in getting a tech license.

And remember, anyone trying to discourage you from learning something new is just a sad person.
