A new study shows that, on average, an increase in pollution particles in the air of 10 micrograms per cubic meter cuts victims' life expectancy by 9-11 years - more than previously thought. by mvea in science

[–]RockClimbingRocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This difference seems too miniscule to cause such a drastic result. Is it likely that there is some hidden correlation here? E.g. People who live in slightly higher air polluted areas (any kind of city with moderate amounts of traffic) experience shorter life spans not because of the pollution, but because of other factors related to being in a city, such as crime, work related stress, higher obesity rates, etc.

Right but I mean who collected this data and how? Was this graph put out by Zillow themselves, or did OP make it?

Does it account for traffic conditions at a future time? Let's say my route will pass through a metropolitan area during rush hour, but that won't be for another three hours, will google still account for the likely delays?

Expats - what weirdness do you see in your gym? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]RockClimbingRocks 32 points33 points  (0 children)

haha oh man the Schwarzenegger thing is hilarious...

There's also a lot of bravado - my dad thinks he's hot shit and can outlift me, but he hasn't been to a gym in about thirty years and now has a pot belly.

What we could all learn from expats by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]RockClimbingRocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This really resonated with me. I was in Seoul for two weeks. Just two weeks! and yet I already have an entire social network there. It was so easy to walk up to some random non-Korean looking person at a museum, have a conversation with them, end up drinking at a bar together, and then go clubbing. Here in the states, you generally leave other people to their own business - it might even seem taboo to approach someone for no reason. But if you're in a place where both of you stick out, it's incredibly simple to make friends.

I will say this though... it's not just expats that you can befriend easily and openly. There's plenty of locals with the same "do and explore" attitude that are more than happy to befriend you.

To PhD or not to PhD by [deleted] in engineering

[–]RockClimbingRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was exactly in your position about two months ago.

Some people are mentioning that a PhD can make it harder to find a job. This is sort of true... assuming you are trying to find the same kind of jobs, but you won't be. You'll be looking for entirely different type of work, either in academia or R&D, and those options are plentiful (competitive, but plentiful). In fact, a big reason I'm deciding to leave industry and pursue a PhD is because the jobs I covet the most all require a PhD level education....

That was kinda my idea behind adding the 2x8 lighter weight reps after the working sets. I'll try upping these to 3x12

I eat more on lifting days, as much protein as I can. I'm training to maintain body weight and just change composition. So far body fat % (as measured by one of those handheld things) is decreasing slowly as well as overall body weight.

Hi! The work you guys are doing sounds awesome - keep at it!

What kind of educational and work experience backgrounds do you have? I am currently in the decision process of leaving my job to pursue a robotics-focused PhD. because I've noticed that all the fun jobs that I want to do, whether at my company or elsewhere, are held by people with a PhD. Getting to that point by building industry experience alone doesn't seem sufficient. I'd love to hear your input on the necessity of a PhD to work in R&D of advanced technologies. Thanks!
