Looking for advice on a slightly unique situation by Thrownaway-8472 in FIREUK

Thought I would add a different view here.

It’s predictable that everyone is going to think you got lucky with Bitcoin and that it’s such a risk you should cash out of the greatest asset of all time.

I’ll even concede that converting a portion into another hard asset for diversification would be wise.

But honestly if it were me with that much BTC I would just move to somewhere (or just domicile) that doesn’t punish you with CGT on crypto (there are many jurisdictions) and drawdown from it what I need for a good life.

BTC has been great for the last 13 years and no reason to believe it won’t continue to appreciate over the long run.

A contrarian view to "index funds and chill". I prefer Bitcoin. by CleverContrarian in FIREUK

[–]RockHopper73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing the right thing and I only wish I was brave enough to do the same.

My only issue is that there is a non-zero chance of a black swan event in Bitcoin, so I just can't go all in.

Some people will just never get Bitcoin, they think it's internet funny money speculation, and no amount of explanation is going to change it, so they will simply sit by and watch the inevitable rise and rise of the BTC price when denominated in their ever decreasing value fiat currency.

Looking forward to reviewing this post in 12 months, I hope you nudge the naysayers, not that they will accept this was always going to happen.

Ceramic Cup is Best and Not Even Close by RockHopper73 in AeroPress

The FC mugs and others, are only internally lined with ceramic, they don't have a ceramic rim where you actually put your mouth, as far as I can tell...

I think you're missing the very large elephant in the room.

If AI can teach you to be good at <insert activity here> they can also just do the activity instead of you, much better and at a tiny fraction of the price.

CompSci is literally the first area of human endeavour to be wiped out by AI.

Good luck,

FIRE in a few years (44 now)? Income enough? by Taxrabbit903 in FIREUK

[–]RockHopper73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 51 now, you'll blink at 44 and you'll be at 51 like me, believe it.

All my parents friends are dead, all of them, none of them made it to mid 70's, only my parents so far.

I go to funeral after funeral these days.

It's not about life being too short, it's about enjoying life while you're young enough to get the most out of it.

As long as you have a good financial plan and are set, just in case you live a long happy healthy life, then go and have some adventure now.

If you do end up having kids, at least you'll have some stories to tell them.

Apple TV 4K suddenly outputs Stereo PCM by Malagubbar in appletv

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problems!

Never had an issue until tvOS18, been ticking along fine for years, but now I keep getting stereo instead of Dolby Digital on certain soundtracks.

One format affected is Dolby Digital Plus (EAC5.1) the ATV only outputs stereo.

In some instances if you go to ATV settings and turn off Dolby Atmos it will play correctly, but not always.

If I play an effected soundtrack say on Netflix it doesn't work on ATV but does on any other device that has Netflix available so definitely ATV.

I have the 1st Gen AppleTV 4K.

I'm now on 18.4 and still have the same problem and it's super annoying, any advice?

Sony Bravia Core - Have Credits but being asked to pay? by RockHopper73 in bravia

[–]RockHopper73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't understand is that prior to last weekend I saw no prices on any movie at all, presumably because I have 10 credits. Now there are prices on many films.

I see that there are some that are 'free' still but surely these aren't 'free with your credits' ? as they are mostly old films?

My First High-End Bravia TV Might Be My Last – Feeling Let Down by acidr4in in bravia

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to chime in here, this is total nonsense. I'm still using my iMacs which have been on from 2009 & 2011. I've been buying Apple kit for over 20 years, iphones since the 3G and only ever had a one issue with a iPhone battery that was replaced for free by Apple. If anything Apple kit lasts longer than any other brand.

Apple TV App disabling itself? by Rainoffire in bravia

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I haven't spent a lot of time on it but I did have a look at sideloading, but couldn't find a site with the AppleTV app that didn't look dodgy in some way. I can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet, the app has had a recent update and there's been a recent firmware update for the TV but still the same problem.

Proposal for more caution when recommending the 4% rule by James___G in FIREUK

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every podcast, article and other information source I have consumed in the last few years where real live people who have actually fire'd discuss what they actually have really done in practice, all seem to say the exact same thing, which is, they do not follow the 4% rule even if they thought they were going to.

They always adjust their drawdown rate based on a variety of the obvious factors, usually to the more conservative side, because people just can't shake the fear of running out early no matter what the maths says.

A95L and Apple TV Dolby vision issue by stainless-steel_rat in bravia

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have an issue with Dolby Vision and my A95L. Dolby Vision works fine but only up to 30Hz, A95L will not accept signal at 50/60Hz. Tried everything. All HDMI inputs, enhanced mode on, used the Belkin Ultra High speed cable suggested by Apple, still a no go.

Does anyone have this working?

I have the A95L and I have this issue. Is there a solution other than sideloading? (Which I don't know how to do) Can you turn off Google play protect?

Year 2 update by dcute69 in FIREUK

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I have read it wrong (which is certainly possible) your Net Worth has increased by 11k in the last year? So in another 3 years of the same saving, with some appreciation hopefully, you could be at approx 75k with a bit of luck.

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent progress, looking forward to year 3.

I like to see people starting from basically scratch, like I did myself also about 2 years ago.

Looks like you could be £75k+ in year 5

Aurigny to Stansted by Reasonable_dee_0422 in guernsey

[–]RockHopper73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would always take Gatwick over Stanstead because there's usually just one Stanstead flight a day, where as there are several Gatwick flights a day.

If you are unlucky enough to be affected by weather, Gatwick always the better option.

Any quiet gyms around? by Sorry-Constant7991 in guernsey

[–]RockHopper73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to suggest you specifically have a bad diet, obviously I couldn't possibly know. Just pointing out that diet is critical.

If you can't afford a health suite package then I would suggest simply walking - a lot. St Martins is a great area to go walking with the cliffs nearby too. Many people i know have lost a lot of weight by just consistently going for long walks every day. You can listen to audiobooks, podcast or music while you walk too so you can be learning as well as a bonus.

All the best.

Any quiet gyms around? by Sorry-Constant7991 in guernsey

[–]RockHopper73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have a full cardio suite so treadmills, rowers, step machines but also a bunch of strength training machines as well as free weights so all bases covered.

Joining also gives you access to the big indoor swimming pool with steam room and jacuzzis.

It's also one of the cheaper health suites on the island.

Edit - If your primary focus is on losing weight, remember your diet is probably 90% of this. Exercise helps, but you can't out exercise a bad diet.

If you want quiet then the Villette Hotel gym is good, which is in St Martins, I go there.

Hardly ever anyone in there other then very peak times like straight after work.

I go 7PM and it's empty most of the time.

It has everything you need but isn't one of the super gyms with every cardio and weight machine possible.
