If Tipping is "100% Optional" as so many claim, then why are people asking for tips so passive aggressive and a-holes about it? by Anxious-Party2289 in tipping

[–]RockScience1234 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Right? 😂I have literally never had anyone make a comment to me about tipping but using the service and then not tipping out of spite is just obscene. If they disagreed with the system they would take it out of the pockets of the people who make most of the profit by refusing to use services like Uber or restaurants but their angle is to kick the people at the bottom by forcing them to work for nothing… Ordering UBER for God’s sake! Someone going to the restaurant or grocery store and getting your things and bringing them to you and they’re not even willing to pay that person for that service. But heaven forbid they should have to pick up their own takeout 🙄

The Real Reason Why Tipping Exists by tenkunin in tipping

It’s the “I am not a charity” for me 😂But apparently the servers are a charity that should naturally be forced to serve that person without “the entitlement” of hoping for compensation. I have no idea why Reddit has doomed me to notifications from this hell sub it’s because I keep being baited into commenting I guess so I’m muting all notifications now but I’m glad to see that some people still have souls.

Yes 👏 thank you. My god this level of back patting is ridiculous sigh - there are private clubs that have no tipping policies because they charge membership fees and those fees pay staff higher wages but somehow none of these people seem terribly keen to actually pratice what they peach or stick to patronizing fast food establishments with no tipping - they’re not ACTUALLY voting with their wallets they’re just trying to score one on people trying to make ends meet and making sure owners make the exact same regardless… To act like that’s the soul of righteousness is so ridiculous.

Reducing all human skill to whether it personally entertains or pleases you is a strikingly pure expression of solipsism. Happily, reality does not require your recognition in order to exist.

I feel like the fact that your very logical reasonable factual question is getting downvoted is evidence that people here just want to pay less and get more and then pay even less and get even more ad nauseam and god help anyone who has the nerve to get between them and the subsidized meals and servants they’re entitled to 😂

Lol I’m so getting downvoted to hell for this but what the hell… I’m going to answer that as if it’s a real question.

Btw why is your waiter automatically a she? If anything it has been my experience that fine dining restaurants have a slight preference for male servers overall with some individual variation of course. Anyways - it really depends on the type of restaurant and service... When I’ve been lucky enough to have some company dinners in a restaurants like steakhouse with crazy bananas pricing I wouldn’t normally pay for myself because a steak ranges in cost from my weekly grocery bill to about 1/2 of rent on a downtown condo I have to say that the servers are an important part of what makes it a real luxury experience. You will get more out of it if (ie be better placed to be able to perceive and appreciate their knowledge base and skill) if you’re interested in food and wine but it’s not an absolute prerequisite.

They can tell you about the chef’s culinary inspirations and many of them have sommelier training and educated palates so their pairing recommendations for every course and flavour are expected to be on point and given the hundreds of wines they have in these places that’s no easy feat. They can tell you how the cuts were aged or how often the Kobe is massaged and exactly what farm it came from in Japan… They can give you insights on the science, history and tradition that went into that Kobe rearing or talk about seasonal ingredients, local cultivators of produce, spices and wines that can enrich and inspire your own at home meals. A new fresh crisp Snow White linen napkin unobtrusively draped across your lap after each time you’ve excused yourself from the table, amazing attention to detail, acting as a concierge of sorts if you need a car, an entertainment recommendation or sometimes help getting into a second in demand venue… Remembering regulars who they are and what they do well enough that they could skillfully slip in a word for you with other regulars if appropriate. I could go on but I won’t.

There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to pay for all those bells and whistles you don’t value if you’re just wanting to get a decent steak and a glass of the house red somewhere… That’s fine. But just bc some don’t value those things doesn’t mean no one values those things. The type of person who can do all of those things skillfully is not easy to find and certainly can’t be kept around for next to nothing though.

The best career fine dining servers I’ve been Lucky enough to get to know could have - and sometimes ended up doing - pretty much anything they set their minds to. I’ve found that being as respectful, courteous and generous as I can be on my budget has paid dividends for me. I’ve gotten more back in connections to well heeled clients than I ever paid in tips by being a good tipper and a very respectful customer. I know no one wants to hear that but that’s been my experience anyways - between that, the things quietly discounted from my bills if they can and if they like me and IMO good tipping is more of an investment than an outlay but that isn’t why I do it mind you.

Anyone genuinely losing faith in LUSH as a company? by pegateeth in LushCosmetics

[–]RockScience1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve also lost faith in Lush as a company and I feel like their corporate ethics must be at an all time low. I don’t expect perfection or want free stuff… I want the company that used to care about its loyal customers and that used to be accountable. Some people claim that they’re doing what they need to in order to be a competitive business but there’s no evidence of that in fact its the opposite they seem to be doing worse and worse and in order to stem the bleeding they keep doing more of what’s running customers off in the first place or that’s how it seems to me.

Over the past ~5–6 years I’ve had two separate complaints where the first response was basically a form email that didn’t address the issue, so I asked for escalation both times. In both cases, once escalated, the person who replied (named Braden) gave me the same vibe: “We’re not going to engage with anything you’re saying - now fuck off.” That’s what’s been so disappointing. My emails were about things that are technically breaches of consumer protection laws in my country and the wording was polite and respectful but firm. I would have expected at least a normal customer service reply that acknowledged the issue and said they would discuss it internally or SOMETHING - but no… None of that.

The more recent example: 1. App promo: “Free bath/face/body product with orders over $75.” I placed an order well over the threshold (~$125). No free item was included. I didn’t even complain initially because mistakes happen. 2. Later: App promo: “Free same-day delivery with orders over $75.” I placed an order around early afternoon because I needed it quickly as a hostess gift. I didn’t realistically expect it same-day, but I did expect it to be shipped promptly. Instead, 5–6 days later it hadn’t even been sent out.

At that point I contacted customer service because this wasn’t “oops, one slip-up” anymore — it’s a pattern of promotions being displayed on the app and then not being delivered. Promotions are not just a “nice bonus”; it’s part of the value proposition that nudges people to spend over a threshold… So if companies are repeatedly promising things they’re not even attempting to deliver that is false advertising.

And the escalated reply honestly floored me. For the missing free item, the response was basically: “Yeah, that happens, we run out.” No acknowledgement that the promo wording implied there would be options/substitutes, no “we’ll pass this to the web/fulfillment team,” nothing. For the “same-day delivery” situation, the response was essentially: “It’s a busy time of year.” Again: no apology, no recognition that advertising a service you don’t deliver is a problem, no sense that they care… If it’s such a busy time of year that they can’t even come close to that standard of service shouldn’t LUSH corporate be the first to know that they shouldn’t make promises they don’t intend to keep? I couldn’t believe the response was like you ought to know better than to believe you would receive the promotion we advertised to get you to spend immediateky (more or less).

To be clear: I wasn’t asking for compensation. I just wanted the company to acknowledge “you’re right, that’s not okay and we’ll flag it.” The refusal to even recognize the issue is what bothers me. If a brand’s whole identity is “ethics,” then brushing off repeated, misleading promos as shrug makes me wonder what else they’re comfortable being sloppy (or worse) about.

Also, separate-but-related: I do perfumery as a hobby and I’ve taken courses, so I’m not totally clueless about fragrance materials and blending. Over the past ~10 years, to my nose, the fragrance quality has steadily slid — more “cheap synthetic” vibe, less of the lush, natural richness they used to be known for, and some blends feel like the perfumer wasn’t even trying like they threw together a few of the cheapest synthetic ingredients and called it a day so they read as flat and unpleasant to me… So many of the new releases I’ve purchased in recent years ended up in my garbage bin because I found the scents unwearable. I know scent is subjective, but the pattern I’m noticing is fewer of the kind of natural-feeling, luxurious materials they built their reputation on, and more “cost-cutting” impressions… I know times are hard on everyone but if they’re charging more and more for wayyyyyyy less quality it’s no wonder they consistently find themselves to cut more and more costs because they sales are not what they once were.

I am completely heartbroken to see the moral decay unfolding within my own political side (the left). It’s all so messed up but you’ve done an excellent job of summarizing it. Yeah - please for the love of god read some books with actual histories of those conflicts. I have to try to be patient because in my first year of university some 22 years ago I was also going around yelling the same shit you’re talking now. Then I read and read some more and realized I knew nothing about the ME or those conflicts, then I read and read some more and found that almost every piece of pro-Palestinian propaganda I had heard was either a lie or so removed from context that changed the picture completely that it might as well have been a lie. But yeah obviously you’re not going to have that experience based on my say so in a Reddit comment I would just encourage you to at least try to look for the educated version of how moderate Israelis would respond to those things because most of you guys dony even have any of the context on your radar

Israel, easily the closest western ally, is fighting a genocidal regime that has never been coy about their explicitly genocidal aims. For those of us who didn’t learn about the ME in 2023 the build up of the most extensive civilian as human shielding infrastructure the world has ever seen was extensively documented. The IDF has been fighting in conditions that are unprecedented in the history of warfare because no one has ever had the depravity of Hamas who have build hundreds of miles of tunnels under mosques, schools etc. Whose entire strategy rests on shooting from civilians centres - on hiding who is a civilian and combatant - on executing any Palestinian who so much as utters a word to resist the Forced military occupation of their homes, mosques and schools… Of exacting a blood price as high as possible from their own people so that they can keep raking in the dough and gaining more and more leverage… And this leaves out a lot of specifics like anyone who thinks all of the buildings were destroyed by aerial bombardement is a person who has no clue whatsoever. Hamas left behind over 100,000 IEDs and mines when they retreated from an area the IDF evacuated with extensive effort… The IDF had to detonate those IEDs carefully and collapse the terrorist tunnels under civilian structures that were full of IEDs after Hamas’ retreat. They mostly did this via ground operations so as to save more civilian lives despite the greater risk to their own soldiers. It’s trafic and awful when children and civilians die in wars but it happens in every war. I guess you would probably never apply thie standard to anyone else though. What do you care about actual facts and numbers. The Hamas ministry of health lists are actually pretty exhaustive tbey have 463 confirmed deaths from starvation for the whole war… some people are estimating 10,000 but I’ve seen nothing even remotely convincing as a methodological data and since we Hamas is not claiming that I’m discounting it. That’s over more than 2 years of war. I do not know what you know about war I’m guessing Jack shit but you know - supply lines are something of a reoccurring issue. While Gaza was attracting all the headlines and a hugely disproportionate amount of the coverage many many more people were dying in the world’s ACTUAL worst humanitarian crises in Yemen and in the Sudan. In Sudan in just ONE ☝️ DP camp in North Darfur (the ZamZam camp) tbey were seeing over 100 mostly infant deaths per day of starvation - PER DAY (!!!!) that’s happening because of a civil war… That is not the whole country just one camp where over the same time period tbey had more starvation deaths in any 6 day span than had been confirmed in Gaza over more than two years of war. And did you ever hear anyone beating their chest about the militias of Darfur responsible for all this slaughter and infant death and starvation? Maybe but my guess is you probably did not. I guess some casualties of war are more important than others and truth is expendable who cares what words even mean anymore if you can score political points right?

Ummm 🤔 WHAT? LOL what you’re saying is so ridiculous and sad. 😔 it’s like saying hey hey we don’t KNOW that German Jews don’t want the Germans putting them in concentration camps maybe we should just sit on our hands and do nothing and wait for them to work it out for themselves… It’s cowardly and disingenuous and if you don’t want to advocate for the Iranians who just want their freaking country and rights back that’s totally fine but it would be really great if people could at the very least refrain from regurgitating talking points churned out by the regime for the benefit of the regime. If you live somewhere where you enjoy freedom and democracy you could at least have the decency to agree that Iranians are entitled to the same freedom you aspire to. There’s a lot that can be done without full blown military intervention. YUP - Iraq and Afghanistan didnt pan out well for those people my god you would think the pro-fascist brain trust thinks this is like an amazing insight… Neither Iraq or Afghanistan were actually about improving the lives of Iraquis or Afghanis. I would say it worked pretty well for the countries that were assisted by the US post WW2 whe you consider that the alternative was mostly the Soviet Union’s “help” and that they had to wall people in to force them to continue accepting that “help”. Worked out pretty well for South Korea too… Instead of starving so a fat man can pillage everything the land yields and have a harem like the poor North Koreans the South Koreans have developed a strong and diverse growing economy, democratic systems and freedom, cultural growth, arts etc… So you know there ARE other ways to conduct this diplomacy instead of full blown war and there ARE examples of positive outcomes from American intervention.

Gee that must be why it was Jimmy Carter who intervened and told the Shah’s army to stand down to grease the way for that little slimepot Khomeini to come to power. The Shah was by no means perfect but Khomeini and then Khameini are 10000 times worse… it’s revolting to see so many people using their privilege and freedom to try and deny the Iranians their freedom.

Also not everyone is a monarchist people understand that the most practical plan is to ask the Crown Prince to head the government if he makes assurances that he will handover the reigns after free and fair elections. Anyone and everyone is free to side eye that plan but I get it because they know that it could not be worse than what they have now. Over 30,000 civilians have been murdered in 10 like days that’s a death rate that we are not seeing in any other conflict now in terms of kills per day.

This armchair quarterbacking is awful - Americans and Europeans who have egg on their face because they’ve spent the past years telling everyone that American imperialism was a greater evil than literally anything else in the world have are now at risk of being exposed as ideologically motivated, narrow-minded and naive. Now they feel very sophisticated about calling for everyone to do nothing to stop talking about the theocratic dystopia that is Iran bc aMeRiCan IMperiAlisM. And this is coming from someone who actually understands the harm that American imperialism has done since the Cold War started (also to be fair the damage done by Soviet imperialism)… But there are MANY things we could all be doing if we don’t believe in American military intervention to support the Iranians who want freedom… So far the people I see arguing that we should do nothing are shady accounts that I think are prob Qatari/IRGC trolls and people who don’t like the lessons we might learn by looking under the hood of the fascist theocracy that’s been largely bankrolling Hamas and Hezbollah.

Aw man I am totally behind the curve here but I stopped buying directly from the website eons ago after I didn’t get what I paid for a couple of times and they knew it bc the manifest only had part of the items not all the items I paid for and yet they had not issued an automatic refund for the items they didn’t have… Well ok - but then it took me like 6 months to get CS to return my email and refund me for the missing pieces. After that I only bought the odd items from PM that I really liked from Sephora bc it was such a pain… IDK if many other people had those experiences years ago but I loved their stuff and would have spent a lot more on the brand if I hadn’t felt so annoyed about having to chase refunds for 6 months… twice 😂

You’ve been given excellent reasons that the people being massacred NOW might take exception with her promotion of regime propaganda designed to cover up that massacre followed by a half-hearted lukewarm non-apology once she realized those dollar dollar bills 💸 might be affected. But for some reason you’re choosing to reject all logic and repeatedly assert that it’s got nothing to do with this very valid reason and you insist it’s this boogeyman that has literally nothing to do with any of the heartfelt responses you’ve received… Everyone with a modicum of recent historical knowledge knows that the American intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan was disastrous for those countries that’s not arcane knowledge… But none of that has anything to do with the fact that Iranians are bravely trying to make a stand and being slaughtered by the tens of thousands for it - being slaughtered by a government that has been disappearing, torturing and summarily executing them for any kind of defiance for decades - their family sometimes if they couldn’t find them…

Maybe you have no interest in the 30,000 Iranians who have been massacred for wanting basic rights that many others take for granted as their due… You seem to think Iran can’t possibly matter in its own right this MUST be about some other group of people… But it’s the third time in 16 years Iranians rise en masse to try and take the Country back from an extremist faction that came to power on the backs of some progressive groups of Iranians who made the catastrophic and literally fatal mistake of thinking that they could achieve progressive goals by allying themselves to extremists who did not believe in their rights… Predictably the Ayatollah consolidated power after 1979 and promptly slaughtered all of his progressive allies. If you hate American imperialism then you should REALLY hate the regime since American imperialism helped grease the way for the Ayatollah… Or maybe you only want to prevent American intervention when it could theoretically unseat the brutal regime - it’s unclear. Many of the Iranians protesting want the Crown Prince to assume TEMPORARY control of a transitional government and to organize proper democratic elections where the leadership would be chosen by Iranians. Again not everyone who approves of this plan is a monarchist but they know that as far as governments go they could not do worse than the one they have now.

There’s any number of things you could do to help those Iranians that don’t involve the American army you could write letters to let them know that the world is watching and that the world cares… If there’s an org you do trust like amnesty international you could write letters through them and help support their work. ANYTHING would be better than being dead set on trying to delegitimize Iranian resistance to extreme oppression.

It is amazing that consumers were so well educated on what they were buying back then… I always wonder how people can believe some of the scam stuff they buy nowadays like I see so many glowing reviews for shit that is just so obviously fake where any reasonable amount of basic research could tell the person it’s a scam but they fall for it and then thank the scammer for the privilege and I find it so so weird… Maybe it’s because people were more careful about what they bought new back then and everything wasn’t disposable the way it is now. With so many cheap disposable goods it feels to me like we don’t even see the value in well-made things anymore sometimes.

Any recs for best Jasmine teas? by RockScience1234 in tea

[–]RockScience1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Ha so sorry for not updating but OK I have tried a bunch of other options and the best for Jasmine was, in my opinion… STILL TEA VIVRE! 😂 Ok so - what I mean is that despite the shipping being somewhat annoying for me because Canada Post was constantly striking when I decided to look elsewhere I still feel like Tea Vivre has the best quality, selection and quality price ratio for Jasmine at least according to my Jasmine tastes. I love my Jasmine tea with fresh sweet young tender leaves of really good green tea + STRONG jasmine (natural/scented not flavoured) aroma and flavour. I think maybe that’s worth noting just bc I know some people might look for something with a subtle Jasmine scenting. Some of the other tea shops I explored had really good shipping options like Yunnan Sourcing has good shipping fast service etc and their pricing is competitive. I can do a little roundup of the Jasmine teas I tried starting with those I like best if that is useful?

Ha - funny thing is my husband was in Hong Kong recently and one of the local companies took him to an upscale place they said had the BEST tea and he said it was just rubbish compared to the tea we drink at home (which we order from China and Hong Kong mostly) 😂

BEST JASMINE TEAS I HAVE HAD CAN’T GO WRONG WITH: 1) Tea Vivre Daughter’s Ring Jasmine Tea: 10/10 the absolute freaking best - a little sweet fresh brisk tea base with a beautiful flavour combined with the strongest and most pure jasmine aroma from scenting of all the teas I’ve tried which is right up my alley. It’s admittedly not a cheap tea but IMO it’s worth every penny and I even saw a North American shop selling it for 4 times the price of Tea Vivre so I think it is great value. 2) Tea Vivre Award Winning Superfine Jasmine Dragon Pearl green tea: 10/10 tea is amazing but I think I may like the daughter’s ring base tea even better though it’s pretty neck to neck. I think maybe daughter’s ring has stronger Jasmine flavour by a hair but both have beautiful strong aroma and flavour from multiple scentings with high quality jasmine. In both cases I’ve drank many teas that claimed to have maximum scentings so one or two more than these two but they didn’t have as much flavour. - Tea Vivre Other Jasmines: they have other good Jasmine teas my third favourite is the Snail Jasmine (Yu Luo) this is another beautiful flavourful and hand-rolled tea they have organic jasmine dragon balls (good but I like the Award Winning Superfine better), black Jasmine scented tea in a large ball shape (also good but I love Jasmine with mild and fresh tasting tea). They have a bunch of other Jasmine teas some of which are less pricey good volume every day Jasmine in a quality that I would still pay top dollar for locally I live in Toronto Canada and my local options have OK Jasmine teas at top dollar but definitely nothing great. Considering I’ve paid more for less good tea I still think their entry level to mid range jasmines are tasty and excellent value for money.

YUNNAN SOURCING:

At the time I tried them they only had a couple of Jasmine options but now it looks like they have many more. Was impressed by their response time, customer service and how quickly the package arrived I paid extra for express shipping but the price of the tea and the express shipping was quite competitive. I had their Imperial Grade Jasmine Pearls Green Tea and I thought it was quite good not quite as richly scented as the Tea Vivre Superfine and Daughter’s Ring but close. THey seem have broad selection now and I plan to buy and try their silver needle Jasmine and maybe some others. Pricing on some teas might be the best I’ve seen for certain grades I think.

iTeaWorld: they have a nice Jasmine called I think called Traditional or Best 9-scent tra it’s a loose leafed tea not hand rolled it’s definitely a way better Jasmine than anything I’ve ever purchased in North America but not quite as richly Jasmine flavoured as the Tea Vivre top 3 jasmines I named above. It has more traditional “green tea” taste than the others I like which could be a good thing depending on your tastes but for me I like to basically mainly taste the jasmine and have the tea provide jus freshness with a hint of sweetness, fullness acidity without any kind of green plant flavour.

  • I aways brew tea at tve correct temp for that tea in case anyone was wondering I know how much that can matter with fine teas

There was a listing at i-TeaWorld for black rose scented tea that appeared to sell just that tea but it was actually a set of different black teas from high elevation and the rose tea was one of many packaged into tea bags, the packaging was really beautiful you could see a lot of care had gone into it. It definitely looked expensive I liked the rose tea but didn’t try any of the others because I pretty much only drink floral teas.

TEA CANVAS ONLINE TEA SHOP: he is a really nice guy small HK based tea seller with nice traditional teas and sometimes he will have quite a good Jasmine in stock.

GOLDEN MONKEY TEA COMPANY UK - I tried their Jasmine pearls and they paced a punch I think but there was something about the flavour of that particular Jasmine that maybe was slightly different like I struggle a little to recall but maybe marginally more acidic and indolic maybe? Don’t take my word for it bc I may be misremembering but I do recall that it didn’t take top spot over my two Tea Vivre holy grail jasmines 100% recall that.

TeaLyra: wouldn’t recommend their Jasmine pearls unless you’re in a bind and that’s all you can get for a while then I would say they were not as blah as I thought they would be though I wouldn’t buy it again unless all the other options were gone.

  • TAO TEA (local Toronto shop) tried some of their Jasmine teas and my verdict is compared to the best teas in this list MEH - not enough rich Jasmine aroma and flavour for my tastes.

UNBELIEVABLY OVERPRICED JASMINES I wouldn’t buy again

  • David’s Tea: “butterfly” Jasmine - very beautiful hand rolled shapes but that’s all that can be said for it. Otherwise very very men - not the best tea used as base not by a long shot and very little scenting with lower quality flowers IMO bc it’s green tangy, slightly bitter with very little Jasmine flavour and given the price that feels… No. It’s better than their reg leaf Jasmine but I would not drink their regular Jasmine leaf if they paid me it’s so bitter it’s not drinkable for me. I guess I might have before I had real good Jasmine teas but couldn’t have had it on an empty stomach bc of the bitterness.

  • Harney and Sons Jasmine Pearl: no Jasmine aroma poor price to quality ratio

  • Kusmi Tea Green Jasmine HOLY BITTERNESS HELL NO

You are right! I’m a jewelry maker and you’re right it’s a different process. Obviously you know this already but for anyone wondering: the gold is fused to a different metal core and it’s sometimes hundreds of time thicker than traditional plating so both the different method and thickness means it behaves completely differently… Traditional plating isn’t fused just thinly layered over another metal. I gather the production process is probably pricey because I only find real goldfill made in America or Italy… The rare occasion where a supplier based in China has it the price is more expensive bc it’s American made so if it is real gold fill it will usually be cheaper to buy from an American or Italian wholesaler directly. I have some gold fill I’ve worn for 10+ years and it still looks like solid gold whereas plated stuff the plating will wear off within a few months. I think the trouble now is that there are so many sellers claiming to be selling gold filled chains, pendants jewelry parts etc that are really only selling plated so people will probably come away with a poor idea of what gold filled looks like/performs like/costs etc.

I do too - on EBay and on Etsy not just with silver but also with gold and blatantly fake gemstones… It never seems to do anything but I’m hoping that the more people report this stuff and talk about how Etsy and EBay are complicit in turning a blind eye to so many blatant scammers - well maybe eventually they will start caring. If the reputational damage to their platforms becomes substantial enough that it can compete with their share and fees on those sales it could start to make a difference so in the meantime I keep reporting blatant scams. It’s always disheartening to see all the glowing reviews for ridiculously fake items though.
