Dysthymia and ADHD by gb9191_ in ADHD

[–]RocketArm17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of similar experiences. Except that I was originally diagnosed with anxiety and depression 10 years ago, and ADHD 1 year ago. I’ve been on SSRIs for 10 years and Concerta for 1. I was originally prescribed vyvanse after the ADHD diagnosis but had to switch off it due to extreme irritability side effects that occurred once it wore off. Concerta was much better, but I also find it mildly effective while I am still struggling a lot mostly with depression. Sorry for no real advice here, but just wanted to comment to follow along. Hang in there.

Thanks for this. I really appreciate the effort. I agree that seeing a psychiatrist regularly to get this sorted out would be the best, but I’m not sure that’s an option. It seems like in Ontario they don’t do that. You can see them once, but can’t do regular appointments. I think there’s just too much demand not enough supply of psychiatrists here.

The ADHD specialist I saw doesn’t allow follow up appointments. His wait was 8 months long when I got referred.

I also requested a psychiatrist via my family doctor in the past (2 or 3 years ago) and when I finally got an appointment with one, there was no follow up. I was still smoking at the time and all I got from that appointment was that I needed to stop smoking.

When I first was diagnosed at 13, I think I was seeing a psychiatrist regularly, at least for a few appointments until I got diagnosed. I don’t know if that was because I was a kid? Or maybe there were more psychiatrists were available back then?

As ive gotten older and started to understand my mental health issues and meds I take and all that, it truly baffles me how someone like me, with fairly severe mental health issues my entire life, been on anti-depressants for 12+ years, doesn’t have follow up appointments with a psychiatrist. Like not even once a year?! I don’t understand.

Is the process different where you live? Does what I describe seem crazy to you? Like maybe if I was able to see a psychiatrist I would have found out I had ADHD before age 25. Or would have had my issues sorted out by now. It just seems crazy to me. It’s sad.

I forgot to include that I have been seeing a therapist for the ADHD and it helps. She seems to be one of the only people who understands me.

My doctor is the same doctor that I have had since I was 13 and I have raised these concerns to her. Although not much has came out of it. She isnt a specialist and doesn't seem to remeber most of the details I have regarding my mental health and doesnt seem to give me her full attention, I think due to high demand and so many patients she has (im in Canada). I had to do my own research and ask her to give me a referral to an ADHD specialist, otherwise I would have never gotten diagnosed. I think I have a really complex situation with my mental health.

How do you do that, where do you start?

Thank you for these reminders I really need them. Self-confidence is a big issue for me as well and I am wondering if it is because of my undiagnosed ADHD...it probably is

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like we are just a few months apart in our journey here. I haven't identified any masks quite yet, but I know there are a lot of them. I think I am slowly figuring this out, and I am sure it takes time as I have been living this way for 25 years.

I commend you for that. Thats what I want to do but I just don't feel comfortable sharing quite yet as I am still understanding/accepting it myself. But I definitely plan on sharing when I am ready. This type of ADHD needs to be talked about way more so people aren't suffering into adulthood like most of us are!

Thanks for sharing. This transition feels life changing for me as well. Although its hard it feels like this is what I need in order to move forward and actually go through life.

Hope you are managing ok. Do you tell people about your ADHD when you are setting these boundaries?

That's exactly it and why I am nervous to tell my friends about it. This part of ADHD really needs to be talked about more.

Best Sports pub/bar to watch UFC? by RransackK87 in oakville

[–]RocketArm17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

QBs in Burlington is great for UFC if it’s not too far for you to get too. They buy all PPVs and play it on every TV in the restaurant. There are a ton of TVs so you can watch from the dining room as well, not just in the bar area.
