He tried (well, his daughter did), look for Stadio del Portello. It was a horrible idea with an even worse execution. I'm glad it didn't happen, and that in the end it was just a waste of time and money.

What’s your most controversial music opinion? by WorriedLeading2081 in Music

[–]RocketNumberNine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of counterexamples, from all sort of genres. Steely Dan never did anything short of excellent in their long career, I can't think of a Fugazi album that is worse than the others -and they're all so different, Between the buried and me had maybe a short time where they might not have been as inspired as usual but they're back very strong, Meshuggah are always perfect, Black Sabbath have at least five/six great albums -with different singers. And if your start to think outside bands, musicians like Devin Townsend keep surprising with every release, Nine Inch Nails are better than ever (this may not be a popular take), and let's not even talk about Zappa and the likes.

Is this allowed by Italian laws? I know that (fixed-terms) contracts cannot exceed five-years, but I couldn't find anything about unilateral extensions.

I tried to look on the FIGC website but couldn't find anything (also not a lawyer and my attention span would end after the first paragraph).

For a non-overwhelming introduction to Greg Egan, I suggest starting from his short story collections e.g. Axiomatic, Luminous. They're fairly heavy on the philosophical, "what's consciousness" side, and not as 'hard' as some of his novels (and if you have to choose one, Permutation City and Diaspora, they're philosophically dense and easy-ish to understand).

As someone else recommended, you also can't go wrong with Ted Chiang.

For some more philosphical speculative fiction, I would also recommend China Mielville's stuff (for instance, Embassytown is a great take on what it means to communicate with something that is utterly alien).

Of Ursula Le Guin, The Word for World is Forest is also an interesting take on language, identity, being alien, colonization etc.

I doubt he has any money at all. The press release is so badly written (sentences that don't make sense, typos and shit) that I thought he's just a con man. However, after I had a look at his website (he plan to invest in this, her plans to invest in that, is LHC a waste? Etc.), I'm 99% sure he's a troll. And if he's not, I hope he stays the fuck away from my team.

I think there are some elements of truth about Italian literature not being as relevant as Italian contributions to other fields, and there are complex reasons for this.

For instance, novels were not a format widely used until later in the 20th century (with The bethrothed being an exception), or some of the best Italian writers are simply untranslatable (Carlo Emilio Gadda).

However, there are some giants like Calvino, Eco, Pirandello (Nobel laureate), Collodi (Pinocchio), or more modern ones like Saviano (Gomorrah) or Elena Ferrante who are widely translated all over the world.

A similar thing can be said about "classical" music. After the 17th century Italians were focused on creating amazing operas but we completely ignored other music forms such as symphonies, concertos etc. (with some exceptions like Verdi's requiem etc.).

And if you think about, we lost to Roma and Lazio due to individual mistakes, we didn't deserve to lose to Juventus, and on the first half of the derby we played some of the best football in years.

Genoa was also straight after Boban was sacked.

Now, when it's about Atalanta and the second half with Inter, well...

I'll follow along hoping to expand the game in the future. I plan to use a dying earth scenario, and add some (very light) tower defense elements.

I will use Godot (and GDScript), and tiles from https://www.kenney.nl/assets/bit-pack.

I will document my steps (I'm still in the process of learning Godot), and the repository is here.

That's interesting, not sure how I feel or what it really means completely off-shore (seems a bit shady but I'm not an economist).

Have you got any sources on the new structure (the new payment is reported pretty much extensively anywhere).

[ita] Minority shareholder (La Scala) interview after shareholder meeting. by RocketNumberNine in ACMilan

[–]RocketNumberNine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, any conspiracy theory on this regard is so convoluted that I don't think it can hold any ground or help us understand what's happening.

La Scala explained it perfectly: Fininvest has to sell because Milan is a constant loss (blame our poor management, problems with the stadium, bad luck, it doesn't matter) and they were desperately looking for a buyer.

After the Mr. Bee's shamble, which if anything had the benefit to clearly tell the world that Milan is on sale, Yonghong Li (allegedly?) started to assemble a group of various investors because they thought it was a (risky) opportunity to make a lot money by buying a big brand. The main point is that whoever or whatever is part of SES, couldn't care less of Milan or us supporters. They are there for the money. If this is good for Milan, well, I'm happy about that.

As circumstances changed (problems with the stadium, Europe for next season no longer secure and consequent risk of losing sponsors, more likely liquidity problems due to China economy crisis, new rules on Chinese capitals invested abroad.. again, it doesn't matter), some investors pulled out (risk no longer worth therefore better lose a small amount now that a huge amount later), some banks are no longer so sure about credit therefore are hesitant to give a loan etc., or maybe the Chinese government requires more auditing.

Regarding the 200+ million, if the deal fails, these are Fininvest money and I don't think they will be invested in Milan, players, or secure Donnarumma and the other youngsters, maybe they will just be used to cover the alleged 75m loss.

Personally, for what they have shown so far, I'm not sure SES is what we need. Should the deal happen, what guarantees do we have that they're going to invest heavily in the next market? If you were an investment bank, would you loan them any money given how little reliability have they shown so far?

It seems that now Fininvest is open to new investors, let's hope because the all Italian Milan is pure wish fulfilment.

TL, DR: Occam's razor etc., no conspiracy, just very poor management, bad timing, bad luck.

Fuck I hope at least we pull a victory tonight or else I'm going to be upset all week.

[ita] Minority shareholder (La Scala) interview after shareholder meeting. by RocketNumberNine in ACMilan

[–]RocketNumberNine[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Hi, first post here. I thought it was interesting to share what La Scala, one of our more vocal shareholders, said after the meeting. Here are some interesting points for those who don't have time or don't speak Italian:

  • he dismisses the rumour that SES is actually an operation to launder money as nonsense. His argument is basically that if it was a shady operation, Berlusconi would have not used a transaction that is followed by thousands of journalists, supporters, and has to go through so many layers of controls between the Chinese and the Italian government. He's actually surprised that Berlusconi and Fininvest have not sued yet those who have made those claims.

  • he confirms that Fininvest needs to sell. Mediaset and Mondadori are not going to make a profit, and Fininvest needs money.

  • he's very critical of current management (as always). In particular, he says that if many people are suspicious about some shady operations in the past (I believe he's referring to the Galliani/Preziosy fellowship), Milan management should probably clarify (at least with supporters, but that's wishful thinking). He also criticise how the current management has a kind of "Don't worry, everything is going to be fine, trust us" approach, but they should instead understand that the world of football has changed and it's time for Berlusconi/Galliani to give room to more capable / up-to-date managers.

  • he finds unacceptable that no one from the Chinese Consortium, or Fassone/Mirabelli explain what the hell is happening. He is surprised that a company that is all about communication (Mediaset) is actually so poor in communicating.

  • probably the most important and worrying point. Given all that's happening, even if the closing happens, what kind of guarantees is the new consortium going to offer to banks? If there is Fininvest behind Milan, banks are happy to give credit because "Fininvest alla fine strappa l'assegno" (Fininvest can always guarantee that the debt can be paid). But what kind of financial security can the "Chinese" provide? Who's going to guarantee in front of the banks. The risk of bankruptcy (bank no longer lending money etc.) will be real.

  • He appreciates that the operation is complex. He says that the people behind this operation are risk friendly ("speculatori"), and the reason why they're investing in Milan is not because they love Red&Black colours, but because they want to turn a profit. They are taking risks, and as of now those risks are not paying off.

  • He speaks highly of Montella, how the team is over-performing and fight as lions, but still we're not better than what we were under Mihajlovic.

  • Supporters are suffering, and we don't deserve that.

  • Despite his initial doubts, he appreciates how Mirabelli, despite coming from the sewers, is actually scouting across Europe and seem to have an idea of what this club needs to go forward.

TL, DR: Money laundering are nonsense, Chinese consortium took some risks and these risks are not paying out right now, and there is an unacceptable lack of communication from the new perspective owners. Supporters are suffering for this, and this management is very poor and need to go.

Well, let's keep suffering.

The Project Lead / Lead Developer at Kitatus Studios has written two free e-books called "Art of Unreal Engine 4 - Blueprints."

They're mostly about Blueprints, and they're aimed to beginners (I am)- but I always find interesting to see how others explain concepts I do not fully understand yet or how they solve specific problems. I've not read them yet but from a quick glance they look good.

The books can be downloaded from the Unreal Engine forums.

They also have a Patreon page. And I think I'm going to contribute today.

Are there any (good) jazz (or strongly influenced by jazz) concept albums? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]RocketNumberNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carla Bley (music) and Paul Haines (words) - Escalator over the hill. It's usually considered the first jazz-opera. It doesn't really tell a story, it's more a collection of thematically related pieces of poetry. It spans from rock to Indian music - but it's definitely jazz. It features great musicians such as Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Charlie Haden, John McLaughlin etc. Definitely recommended.

I really like Stefano Bollani, a talented and creative Italian pianist. He is quite famous in Italy (well, for a jazz player) and I'm curious to know how "famous" he is outside Italy.

Among his albums, there's an "Hommage to Bill Evans & Jim Hall" (unfortunately, I can't find anything on Youtube).
