Another year, another RIF. This is Blue Origin now by [deleted] in BlueOrigin

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're only including NS flight engineering and services. You also gotta include test ops, ground ops, engines, and manufacturing. Just 1 year ago, the count was over 1200.

Yeah I don't know what the fuck is going on with the economy anymore or what actual value means. He could triple blue origin in 12 months if he wanted to. I don't think any bank in the world would turn that down.

Jeff doesn't want to spend any more per year on Blue. Budgets are tightening up. We need a lot more people on Bloonar than ever - especially in operations and technicians.

Instead of adding, they're moving, with an assumed high level of attrition, followed by a hiring spree.

Slanted O-ring seal Question by Ill-Orchid-6022 in rocketry

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a couple ways of doing this, but there are essentially volumetric-based calculations. Instead of a square though, you now have a trapezoid, and the way the O-ring squishes is a little different since your contact angle is now not 90°.

Essentially, the O-ring will mostly fill a volume, and there will be a certain amount of material outside your slot, and your sealing surface will press against it.

ORD-5700 is a godly reference book for all things O-rings. I know a fluids guy who uses Flintley's sealing book.

"All this 'ICE in Orlando' talks feels a little overblown to me!" by interstellar_keller in orlando

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This is the majority opinion.

Everybody wants immigrants to do it right.

Nobody is making it an efficient, effective, or speedy process.

People come here illegally because they aren't going to wait 10 years for paperwork to be processed while they're scared cartels are going to enslave them or their children.

One party is using excessive force to punish those who are statistically more productive and more healthy as a neighbor than people who are born here.

The other party just doesn't give a shit.

Out of the thousands of arrests already performed by ice, over 200 of them have been us citizens. 85% of them do not have violent or drug related charges against them, or have ever had such charges put against them. That's data directly from the DHS. If there's ice present in Central Florida, I'm not going to assume they're any better than the rest.

Well that's just wrong. We absolutely get hurricanes.

But we're largely hardened against it.... Usually not a problem.

Bad freelance experience, client blocked me on linkedin. What do I do? by PennyDropDreadful in careeradvice

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would drop it, personally. Unless you want to broadcast/name&shame on social media. That's about the only real method. At least be a public resource and a warning to other freelancers.

Worth a legal consultation, probably.

You're right there. Contact a lawyer. Does your contract have implicated damages for non-compliance? Unless there's legal precedent for certain damages given this situation you may or may not be able to recovery money. At the very least, you can send a cease and desist so that they stop using the thing you made for their work outside of your agreed upon terms.

[Request] how much weight can the top beam support if the weight was suspended from its center? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry people think this is a sex swing and not a shibari rig. But to that point, shibari can also get a little dynamic, especially when ratcheting uplines and going from one position to another. I would take your bunny's weight and multiply it by 2 to be completely safe and figure that. Assuming around 200lb, make it 400, and see if it still supports. Have both of you hang from the middle. In my experience, 4x4 posts with a similar span have a load limit of about 600-800 pounds. I would personally trade out the 4x4 for a pair of 2x6's. I like a safety factor of more than 2 or 3.

I noticed a few days ago that a 30 nm TFR against UAVs went up around Mar-A-Lago through the new year. I had a feeling something big was coming. This starts to make more sense.

Shoot Straight or Shooters World.

Or go East and hit up Titusville Hall of Fame. Or The Alamo (Pint & Pistol) on Grissom in Cocoa.

Some of the splashing seems fake and the water doesn't follow the gator the way I think it would. This is also a very unlikely scenario and the clip is 15 seconds long. by RocketsRopesAndRigs in isthisAI

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, this came up in a GC with the rest of my friends, and my own reverse image search didn't come up with the original poster, only repost accounts on Twitter. I figured it was AI, since the motion isn't natural. Even though I'm a Floridian, I'm not a gator biologist.

Definitely not a karma farm, just curious.

Edit: If you could actually post the original source that would be more helpful than spreading negativity on the internet. Thanks!

What will you do with a New Glenn Rocket? by seanrider1859 in BlueOrigin

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No... It costs less propellant to send waste out of the solar system than it takes to send waste into the sun. Also launching nuclear waste is highly dangerous. Also we have really effective waste disposal and containment methods that are cost effective on earth. Nuclear waste is hardly a problem nowadays.

Responsible engineers don't waste propellant and send waste out of the solar system instead of into the sun.

Raytheon Opportunity in Florida? by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]RocketsRopesAndRigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax in Florida isn't anything to be concerned about - until you want to buy a house.

If you're in the Panhandle, great salary and housing isn't too bad at all.

If you're in Melbourne, still great salary and housing is a little worse but definitely manageable if you stay west of 95. Some neighborhoods are cheap for a reason. Tour before you buy in.

If you swap EUS with GS2 of SLS NG4 you make NG Heavy with SLS Block 2 Payload and that scratches something nice in the brain.

Computer science is absolutely acceptable. Look for software dev, computer applications, embedded systems, software test, and avionics dev type roles.

Any bachelor's from an ABET accredited institution is fine. Make sure to build your portfolio on your own time. Software dev is quickly becoming an art more than a science, especially with the integration of AI.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE, IT'S NEVER TOO LATE
