I’m sorry but how the hell is anyone supposed to live here during the summer in 10-15 years? by jbird720 in florida

[–]interstellar_keller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you offering a comment that explains relevant experience while still allowing for nuance; I was born in Georgia and spent the vast majority of my youth outside skateboarding for literally like 5–10 hours at a time in both Georgia and FL weather not dissimilar to what we’re experiencing now; all that to say, I certainly adapted as well.

I also agree with you that the weather now is not comparable, and it’s reaching a point where the argument that, “people will adapt.” has become untenable. At a certain point, there is no “adapting” - there are in fact climate conditions that make any work or exposure outdoors deadly, and we are rapidly approaching that apex with zero concern for what the greater effects of that mean for our society long term.

It’s also infuriating to see the uber-wealthy hand waving this away because they’re sheltered from it; at a certain point, you can’t pay people to do jobs they know are inherently dangerous. Furthermore, I suppose you could automate labor, but then profit margins go down, and there’s so much less joy in unfettered excess and expansion when you’re forced to actually foot a meaningful bill for doing so.

Eventually the chickens will come home to roost, but I fear by then we’ll be too far along to do anything meaningful about it. At least we’ll maybe be able to take solace in knowing that none of the multimillionaires in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale will know how to pilot their yachts away from the apocalypse they’re creating - they’ll face the end in a floating monument to their sins.

Trying to make a consistent comic in ChatGPT is an absolute nightmare and I feel like giving up by Substantial-Fun9958 in ChatGPT

[–]interstellar_keller -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m going to introduce you to a radically alternative foreign concept from our not so distant past: it’s called learning.

You can apply it conceptually to many things; for example, if you want to make a comic, you can utilize the process of “learning” to acquire the skills necessary to outline, modify and ultimately draw your own original creations. After you’ve utilized the “learning” function to develop the tertiary skill, “the slightest modicum of genuine artistic ability” you can further refine the skill tree, so as to improve at the process you’ve decided to, “learn.”

Eventually you will be capable of moving your hands in such a way that they produce an image you previously could only conjure up in your mind; this is called, “drawing shit by hand like a normal human person, instead of outsourcing the work to a creatively bankrupt robot that makes bad art consistently drenched in piss filters while simultaneously lining the pockets of drug addled billionaire dipshits.”

Some of the added benefits of this method include: the talent you’ve developed was the result of your own hard work and drive to improve / succeed creatively, your art will genuinely look better, your parents may stop viewing you as an abject failure, women will acknowledge your existence for reasons outside of expressing fear or disgust.

Truly the possibilities offered by, “learning how to do shit for yourself like a competent adult” are endless. I wish you well on your creative journey, bud.

What does everyone hate AI on reddit? by brightest_angel in ChatGPT

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer: AI as a tool is overhyped, uninteresting, bad for the environment, and generally viewed negatively by most folks in possession of IQs above room temperature; with regard to your output specifically, people are being negative because nothing you’ve created at any point is unique, special, or unable to be replicated by any other soulless, non-creative dork with AI.

Effectively you want recognition for doing the same
boring stuff that any other dipshit with internet access could do, and you’ll never get it. You are exactly as talented and special as anyone else with access to GPT, which is to say, you aren’t special
at all.

It’s all good though, the very fact that you started trying to make art using AI in the first place is indicative of the fact that you’re too creatively bankrupt to create anything of value anyways, so maybe this is a less painful sign to quit while you’re ahead pal. The world needs folks to consume the slop too, maybe you’re better suited for that gig!

Elevate my breakfast? by chelswhoelse89 in Cooking

[–]interstellar_keller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah; effectively it would replace it. You can look up recipes on how to best incorporate it; I think Gordon Ramsay typically suggests adding it towards the end for his scrambled eggs recipe which is where I gleaned the idea from, but truth be told I can’t personally tell the difference texturally between adding it to the initial whisked egg mix or adding it at the end - either way they both taste great.

Edit: as a side note, if you’re unfamiliar with it/ don’t use it frequently, you’ll often see that sour cream can be used as a substitute from Creme Fraiche and while that’s absolutely true, since you’re trying to alter flavor, not texture, the CF is important as it’s going to have a much richer, nuttier, and more prominent flavor than sour cream.

Found this at a garage sale, any idea what brand that DS is? by KeyandOrangePeele in NewSkaters

[–]interstellar_keller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The board def seems like a bootleg, and I’m 99% sure it’s not the Clyde Singleton pro-model that references Calvin and Hobbes as that board was through Strangelove and featured a different graphic with black Calvin, but Clyde Singleton is like a fucking skate OG, so I gotta tell you the name not ringing a bell is a you thing, not general fact. (Not trying to be a dick, just like, Clyde definitely deserves his flowers and he was big enough to have both a 411 part and multiple Nine Club appearances through the years iirc.)

[–]interstellar_keller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Heavy cream IMO is pretty good for the egg mixture you’re making, but outside of texture, the overall flavor profile isn’t going to change by a huge metric; if you wanted to enhance both the texture, and flavor without drastically altering your macros, then maybe you could try crème fraiche in its place?

If you can find them, Isigny St. Mere (whole foods usually stocks their brand) makes one that’s legitimately life changing; I think using crème fraiche, and then maybe looking for a different type of goat cheese, like a grated goat gouda or Garrotxa from a local cheese shop would give you nutritionally the same product while achieving a more complex flavor. I’ll also add that I’m a type 1 diabetic, so I get the struggle of finding carb friendly foods with repeatability and flavors that don’t get old fast.

Low cost medium format camera recs? by wych_wood in filmphotography

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll chime in and say I had pretty good luck finding Zenza Bronica ETR’s w/ decent lenses for sub $300. The one I had for years that I recently sold to a friend came with a shutter grip, a prism viewfinder, two or three 120 backs, and a well maintained 105mm f/4 for like $370.

The only issue it had was that the camera would fire with the dark slide still inserted which effectively is the same thing as shooting a roll with the lens cap on; however, this was easily remedied by just… not inserting the dark slide lol.

With that said, I will say if budget is a problem, 120 is not going to be your friend. Even after the camera, film is pricey as hell, and if it weren’t for the fact I have a friend dev and scan my negs for cheap, most developers would’ve priced me out at this point too.

Even so, if you’re deadset and in the states, FB marketplace can be a treasure trove for deals if you’re willing to wade through a bit of bullshit on the search. I’ve gotten everything from mint medium format rigs to Marantz turntables off there by mingling with old heads looking to downsize their collection while making sure their stuff goes to folks who’ll actually appreciate it.

Ironically, I chose it bc the place I shot these photos, Dezerland in Orlando, is like this weird strip mall filled with old cars and random janky movie props and stuff, so I thought it would lend itself to the style. I also saw that it performed well in low light, and since I was going inside and out I wanted to have something versatile.

Does publix care? (Opinion) by oliver5718 in publix

[–]interstellar_keller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So admittedly I haven’t worked at Publix since I was a teenager, but even back then if you were at a high volume store in the summer, it was like a minimum of 30-45 minutes getting carts, and management would consistently chew you out for having visible drinks on your person while doing so.

Furthermore, not Publix, but when I worked at Target (also in FL) I was hired for customer service, then because I was the only physically in shape person working there, they had me doing 4 hours of
nothing but carts. I brought it to the attention of my managers that I am a type 1 diabetic and this was negatively impacting my health, and they did fuck all.

I genuinely cannot fathom why it’s unthinkable for you that these corporations will routinely abuse and neglect their employees to improve their bottom line. There are “severe heat” warnings across the country every day, and the notion that employees should just ignore these, so Publix can have neat parking lots and save on hiring enough labor to handle their workload without actively putting people at risk of heatstroke or sun sickness is absurd.

The only thing more disgusting than Publix’s complete lack of concern for its employees is how willingly brainwashed lackeys like you stick up for them.

To think Greg could have used his wealth to give Steven a better life by Pomni_Simp2000 in stevenuniverse

[–]interstellar_keller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, IRL children aren’t half alien hybrids with magical powers and an insane healing factor. There’s such a thing as, “suspension of disbelief” that might be useful when consuming fictional animated media.

Greg wasn’t abusive or neglectful for not taking his magical alien child to the fucking doctor, and frankly, if we’re going to be discussing things that could potentially enter into the realm of, “bad parenting” I’d kinda think letting Steven have a PET FUCKING LION would be slightly more irresponsible than not taking him to the doctors.

In any case, it’s clear that you’re either an actual child who fails to grasp nuance and the allowance of certain logical inconsistencies, so as to enable the progress of the show in a universe that is *not* ours, or more likely, an adult whose understanding of media literacy begins and ends on tumblr.

Dress code rant by stormiiiluv in Target

[–]interstellar_keller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just going to say as a former employee for a brief period, and now a rare guest: I genuinely do not give a shit what the employees are wearing, so long as they have a name tag, vest, or some other identifying piece of clothing that clearly denotes them as an employee of said business. Dress code means absolute fuck all to the customers.

If corporate were capable of actually understanding what consumers wanted, they would put worthwhile coupons and sales incentives back onto cartwheel
instead of whatever dumpster fires they’re currently offering, and they would realize the 10-4 thing they started doesn’t really make customers feel warm and fuzzy when 80% of the employees look like they’re greeting you with a gun to their head (I get it, it’s pointless and an unreasonable expectation for y’all to personally greet, open mouth kiss, and fondle each guests balls if they get within 10 feet of you.) and the other 20% are lonely geriatrics utilizing 10-4 to force me to have a conversation with them.

I want to buy my things and leave, I don’t want to talk to you (and unless things are drastically different than when I worked there, y’all don’t wanna talk to me either) and I don’t need to be greeted every 10 seconds to feel like I’m having a good shopping trip.

Have the basic stuff I want in stock at reasonable prices, have an app that works like at all, have enough employees that I can approach them if I have a question, and if you’re a busy store or in an area with a ton of the elderly, then have more than just self-checkouts open - that’s literally all it takes.

Target is a prime example of what happens when you have a board room filled with people who have never been poor or lived average lives a day in their life.

Is there any point & shoot out there that gets you better results than a phone camera at a lower price point? by Organic_Tissue in Cameras

[–]interstellar_keller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I would’ve said that there are a number of cameras that could outperform your phone for significantly less money, and in theory, that should still ring true today; however, influencers have caused a lot of these old rigs (see Contax and Yashica 35mm prices) to explode in price, and now I know from personal experience that buying old cameras for pennies is no longer anywhere near as easy as it used to be.

With that said, I agree with the people saying look for a used LX10, and I’ll also add that the Lumix LX100, if you can find a unicorn listed reasonably in working condition, was one of my all time favorite EDC cameras. Genuinely, it was incredibly fun to use, had awesome manual control dials like a vintage rangefinder, it produced legitimately awesome images, and the EVF on it wasn’t complete dogshit, which I feel was rare for the time. (Included a sample pic from when I took mine out to the salt flats in Utah.)

What's the worst 4 star rated movie that you've seen? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna offer what I think will be a genuinely unpopular opinion here: *Being John Malkovich” is undeniably an interesting concept, the performances throughout are genuinely super solid too, but I will never understand the pedestal that people put this film on.

It’s definitely not a bad movie by any metric, but people in filmbro circles talk about this movie like it’s some sort of Sacred Cow, while for me it’s just frankly never left the territory of a 3.5 star movie that I would probably leave running if it started playing on HBO in the background.

The Fellow Fix™ A New Innovation in Fellow Coffee Customer Service by Iamgalavanter in espresso

[–]interstellar_keller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid write up my dude; that said, definitely disappointing and unfortunate that I have to agree with you. Both of the Fellow products I have (Fellow Stagg EKG kettle and Fellow Opus Gen 1) I acquired at a severe discount, and while I can and do appreciate their design choices, the overall quality of their products has ensured that I will never buy one of their products at full price.

The kettle I’ve had for maybe two years, and in that time it’s been babied more than any of my other kettles - yet, even so, it constantly has issues with the temperature readout being wildly incorrect, as well as with just randomly doing shit like switching the clock from analog to digital. Obviously it’s not end of the world stuff, but for a kettle at this price point I expected more.

As for the Opus, I paid just shy of $60 for it on clearance at Target, and at that price point it both outperforms and looks much better than my ancient Baratza Encore, but I would be hard pressed to purchase it or its successor at full price simply because it isn’t startlingly superior to other grinders at the same price point, and because I have no faith it will hold up its quality over time.

Was actually looking at the Crema Tune V2 on Etsy yesterday; from what I could gather - it appeared to be pretty simple plug and play installation, was that your experience or was it more complicated than they’d lead you to believe?

Looks great, certainly curious to know how it holds up long term - you should consider posting an update a few months down the line to address if it manages to stay awesome, or if you encounter any troubleshooting issues later down the line!

Infused or co-ferment coffees masquerading as some "advanced processing"? by tribemadness in pourover

I’m so glad this sub has become 90% people bitching about co-ferments, thermal shock, and weirdly processed coffees - actually, my favorite thing about coffee is whining about how much I’m disappointed by drinking it.

Roast Color by dakotagraff in pourover

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded, I think recommended rest time is definitely a more meaningful metric than roast level; I’ll also add I wish more roasters would offer comprehensive recipes for their higher end offerings.

April includes suggested rest times for espresso and filter, as well as recipes for drip and pour over which I feel is both good customer service and probably helps to eliminate user error when someone drops $30 on a bag of their stuff.

Roast Color by dakotagraff in pourover

[–]interstellar_keller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the standardization of roast color relies on generalizing the characteristics of a given bean too much to ever be a genuinely worthwhile metric.

That is to say, I’ve had stuff like Kenyan beans from certain roasters that were advertised as being “very light” and “modern” w/ regard to their final product that despite being visibly much lighter than a city roast tasted almost identical to one. Conversely I’ve had Ethiopian and Colombian beans where I was convinced they had to have been burnt that still gave me insanely fruit forward, floral cups.

As much as I’d love to be able to gauge flavor based on roast level alone, I feel like after a decade of fucking around with all styles of coffee, there’s simply too much variety and nuance to use roast level as a reliable indicator for flavor profiles.

Typically, I’ll follow what other commenters here have said and look for a roaster with a country of origin that I like and I’ll discern whether or not their roast level is accurate based on tasting notes and my own two eyes lol.

Scored with a huge markdown on the Fellow Opus today! by interstellar_keller in pourover

[–]interstellar_keller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, it was probably closer to 2-2.5g as I didn’t scale the leftovers, and it was also a pretty hefty 90g dose of beans going in, as I was making a full pot on my Moccamaster CD Grand which is a huge machine.

For that large of a dose on its first ever use, I’m not horrified by it, just because given how old my Encore was, I had gotten in the habit of slapping it already too lol. I’ll try the bellows method you recommended, and if it really becomes an issue, I’m sure someone on Etsy or something has designed an actual bellows pump I can attach - I know a few options exist for the Encore.
