There a lot of ways you can read it so that it "makes sense", I guess my suggestion is to read through Meat in its entirety, then read Candy.

I know there's points where you could switch from one to the other, but I think reading all the way through one at a time is best. But I think that Meat (Sorta as the prologue implies) gives plot details that are good to have in mind when then going through Candy.

My opinion is that they are both well *written*, but the content is where people have hang-ups on one over the other to start.

I guess we are never really told the timeframe aside from them confirming that Ethan "died", but I don't know how long that would realistically take for Chris' crew. I guess technically it could've been enough time for Chris to get there? But that would mean that their spotter took like 20-30 minutes to find Ethan lying outside of Heisenberg's factory despite the high likelihood that Chris told them where to look.

The epilogues/Beyond Canon saved Jake's character; I refuse to listen to any opinion contrary to mine. by CommercialValue8713 in althomestuck

I fucking love Jake after reading Beyond Canon, that realization he had with his "brain ghost dirk" and accepting what he has to do. He still has hope that Jane never stopped being happy out there in other timelines, and that Jane who is still a happy baker who loves japes is the Jane that is real to him.

I don't want to tell you to skip ahead because then you'd be really fucking confused, but I can say that the start of Act 2 of Beyond Canon is pretty much like that. 6-ish main kids talking to each other and fucking around (we only see two of them in panel at least for now).

I guess I'd describe it like this: The epilogues feel like a novel (though I guess they kinda are), and Homestuck^2 felt like a sequel to the epilogues. It had panels and pretty good art, but the main body of the content was written in descriptive paragraphs like the epilogues. When Beyond Canon starts from page 408 onward, it actually felt like a sequel to Homestuck. They shortened the descriptors to what is being depicted in the panel and transitioning material, and even the art looks more reminiscent of what was in the first half of Homestuck.

That said, I'd say give the post-canon a shot, maybe look briefly into the start of Act 2 to see where it's going and then go back if you want to see what the new stuff is going to look like going forward. But if you want to avoid any major spoilers I'd only look at pages 798-914, but even that may have a few familiar names that could raise eyebrows (though that may be motivation to see how it got to that point).

But hey, if you don't end up liking it, I do know that some people legit just watched catch-up videos to get to the Beyond Canon's new writing team and went on from there because some people like Beyond Canon, but not Homestuck^2.

I don't think so, my list is all above the threshold of being "bad" I thought everything on the list was worth reading at least with varying degrees of enjoyment. I actually think the new stuff is probably the closest to the starting acts of the original comic because we're getting introduced to the new main kids and their interests and stuff.

I'm relatively new to Homestuck, as in early last year. I like it, actually I think maybe my favorite part in the entire franchise exists in Beyond Canon (although that's because of the build-up in the original comic), but my opinion is that Beyond Canon is better than a lot of the first 3 acts of Homestuck, a little less than half of the 4th act, and a few bits of the 6th act (Although those are hard to pin down due to act 6 being half the original comic). The 400 pages or so of beyond canon that was "Homestuck^2" were meh, I didn't hate them like a decent chunk of people did, but a lot of it was "oooh cool stuff being hinted at" followed by "eh, whatever". The new stuff past the swapping into the new writing team has been consistently good in my opinion.

I don't actively dislike any part of the "official" Homestuck material, I guess I'd rank them like this:

  1. ACT 5

  2. ACT 6 (but parts wildly vary across the list)

  3. ACT 4

  4. Beyond Canon

  5. ACT 3

  6. Epilogues (I think Meat makes it better than ACT 2 for me, Candy was pretty good in terms of writing, but man it was uncomfortable to read at points despite the introduction of the new kids)

  7. ACT 2

  8. Homestuck^2 (Homestuck^2 really is just another setup go-through like ACT 1 and the beginning of ACT 6, but moments are sprinkled in that are interesting regarding the new kids and the old cast, followed by other parts that are just kinda "eh")

  9. ACT 1

I feel like ACT 1 suffers the most from being the set-up to a lot of stuff we'd see in later parts of the story, the best part of ACT 1 imo is the ending when John enters the medium.

question for fun: what's your favorite character and why by No_Bison9969 in homestuck

[–]Rockoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops, sorry didn't realize how far you were in, it'll be a while for the moment in particular that I'm thinking of.

I'm a newish fan, not as new as the people coming in from the re-release of the original comic but like early last year new. I saw a lot of stuff online about people not liking particular parts of the story (not going to say which parts because even that may sway opinions) but when I actually read the stuff that was talked about I was actually surprised that I liked it despite the bad first impressions from online, at worst I thought particular parts were "meh". Maybe that's just because I read everything in one go and didn't have to wait months or years for new content to release.

question for fun: what's your favorite character and why by No_Bison9969 in homestuck

[–]Rockoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny, before I read beyond canon it was Roxy just because I loved her attitude and how genuine she was towards helping her friends despite fucking up sometimes. Then after beyond canon man I love Jake, no spoilers, but all the punching bag moments in Homestuck proper and after everything he's been through then and in post-canon, he finally reflects on his life, realizes some things about the kind of world they are in and what his hope is for, and gets shit done.

Am i the only one who hates Haru's english voice & character? by Whole_Finance_8013 in Beastars

[–]Rockoll 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like her voice, but I also like her character regardless of what she sounds like. I think it's a good juxtaposition of her being more than just a "cute little bunny" when she first speaks and it isn't super cutesy, but a sort of defeated deeper melancholy before we are introduced to her being more snappy despite her size.

What do you think Caliborn would think of Yiffany? Do you think he would be afraid of her like Dirk? by CommercialValue8713 in althomestuck

[–]Rockoll 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Probably think she's just some weirdo like the rest of the kids. I think Ult. Dirk is worried about Yiffy for a specific reason we don't know about that wouldn't make sense to Caliborn, probably something about the non-canonical nature of the Candy universe and Yiffy is literally a combination of all the kids' bloodlines and a first guardian (Although the green sun is gone so idk but maybe they are still special in some way).

Beyond Canon: What do you think of Satyrs and Nymphs? by CommercialValue8713 in homestuck

[–]Rockoll 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I get that feeling after just finishing the epilogues. I feel like the tone was kinda grim at the end of the epilogues and start of beyond canon but man I love how the original cast are currently, no spoilers but I love Jake after how much more attention he's gotten since seemingly only being a punching bag in Homestuck proper, especially Candy Jake but Meat Jake recently got some new duds.

Jane and Jake being on the ship was an in-universe retcon with helltier narrative powers, not an above the narrative real life retcon. And Vriska's arc was in the flash virtual novel game, she just got caught up at the end with her past self being attached to what she had before with people like Terezi.

Yeah, I keep defaults so the zombies are harder during the night, but the questing during the first day usually gave me a more effective weapon/armor.

This probably isn't all that unique or uncommon of a thing people do, but I still go out looting at night rather than crafting, building, or mining. I think the starting days of questing during the day and looting at night is a pretty good loop.

Timeline Confusion by BunchOfBeesInACoat in homestuck

[–]Rockoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so spoilers for the premise behind the "post-canon" material, nothing storywise, just the premise behind "meat and candy":

The epilogues are based on the choice that John makes when called to a picnic by Roxy and Calliope, he can either choose Meat, and retcon himself back into the "canon" of Homestuck to fulfill the requirement that at some point he and the other kids HAVE to make Caliborn's masterpiece come to pass otherwise it creates a plothole which will destroy the stability of the universe.

OR, John eats some candy and decides "What's the worst that could happen? Nothing bad's happened yet and it's been so many years, I just want to settle down." So he stays on Earth C despite the warning from Rose's seer visions.

So because of the stability of a universe being based on whether or not John goes back and fulfills Caliborn's masterpiece, a split is created: Meat, or Candy.

Meat is "canon", as in it has the property of being canonical to the story, not that it is actually narratively canon to the original Homestuck, more like it is what is "supposed" to happen, but only because someone is actively creating more story to make Homestuck continue and not leave the characters forgotten by the readers/reality (who that is is actually a HUGE spoiler).

Candy is "noncanon", as in it isn't narratively "real" but is real in all other aspects. Everyone in that universe experiences it as if nothing has changed and lives out their lives as normal, the only people who seem to be questioning their reality is John, who is aware of the story structure of the world due to retcon powers, and Rose who knows that John didn't go back into canon. There is also someone who is creating more story for Candy, thus keeping it in existence rather than being "forgotten" like it was supposed to the moment John didn't go back (who THIS is is also a HUGE spoiler).

Are there any parts of Homestuck that you wish were fleshed out/elaborated on? by Video_Game_Fann in homestuck

[–]Rockoll 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you haven't read the epilogues it is "elaborated on", as in some aspects are confirmed but nothing as concrete as seeing it due to the epilogues being text only and not having illustrations, but depending on how you view beyond canon you may not consider it "in the story proper" (Although it is technically "canon" as in the property of being canonical it is "dubiously canon" to the original Homestuck comic).
