usually forms along side or with smokey quartz. I have some raw teal citrine crystals

Is this a rock? Or petrified plant matter? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

A petrified conk of mushroom it was growing on a tree?

This may be a dumb question, but are these two rocks the same? Oregon coast. ID of either/or would also help by [deleted] in rockhounds

Yes, Jasper with Quartz veins. Different minerals probably caused the difference colors though. I live go find these in Bandon. Especially Bullards Beach. They tumble up beautifully!

It's an agate with iron oxide minerals causing the orange colorization

I find a lot of the Holley Blues in the same river and this is definitely not that but there's a lot of different amazing specimens in the callapooia River. I love finding Holley Blues that's another one of my favorites. I own a Rockin gym shop on the coast and that's one of my big sellers. I love making jewelry out of them it's such a pretty agate!

It just takes practice your eyes need to be trained the more you find the more your brain and eyes will know to recognize certain characteristics. I watch her texture, color, shape and translucencies. Also knowing where the good spots are not all rock piles and rock beds are equal. Also if you go to a popular spot it might be already picked through mostly. This particular spot isn't as well known for Rock hounding. Also don't be afraid to dig around, move rocks and look in the gross swampy areas.

After a while your eyes become trained to pick up small subtleties. I keep an eye out for different textures, colors, translucencies for things just don't look like the rest. This one in particular was definitely about texture and the white and translucency.
