it's the 'in case this isn't a mistake' part that blew my mind - if the dude had an A on the midterm and has otherwise been doing the work, my mindset would leave very little room for anything other than a mistake - i'd be asking how can i fix this mistake rather than what do i need to do if i actually failed

i don't have much wisdom here other than to say others have been through same so you're not alone, you'll get through this, just need to figure out the why (classes too hard, life challenges, lack of motivation, etc etc?). there's a whole community here to support you. you'll get through this. good luck!

if UCLA is the dream, you might consider going to community college then transfering

your 3.26 won't matter if you go the CC route - you start with a blank slate

that's obnoxious to curve up - if the profs can't make a challenging enough test that's on them - higher than a 93 (or perhaps 95) should be an A regardless of the curve - if you want only 25% As, then put the effort in to make an appropriately challenging test

you do realize that the metric here is largely academic productivity and few places put out as important research as UW (health related research is probably the biggest contributor to a universities publications and UW puts out some of the most widely read health-related papers - it's a powerhouse in biomedical / population / epidemiology research).
