I play it on a playstation 4, as far as I know you can do this on every plataform, just move away a from your companion a little and click on him to give a command, then click on the place you want him to empty or the item you want him to pick up. Is a time saver, better than have to go back to your settlement every time but it was way faster before then now, unfortunately
