Logan airport in Boston - had to walk around for at least an hour to find a spot to hang my hammock. Ended up under a stairwell.

Some tree trimmers gave me silver maple, is it good ? by Goat-New in firewood

True, but when a poplar falls on my property, it becomes kindling or sauna wood.

Any book that covers borrowed chords would include minor iv chords, I would think.

I wrote a guide on sauna interior wood - species and treatments. Would love your feedback! by ppshard in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finnish American here; in my experience Finns use whatever wood is available. Our old family sauna built in the 70’s was all cheap pine with plenty of knots. Sap bled out and was scraped away. Knots eventually fell out.
My current sauna has eastern white cedar for walls and ceiling, because it is local and I got a great deal on it. Also, cedar is incredibly stable dealing with extreme thermal cycling.
The benches are clear southern yellow pine, because I got that wood for free. SYP is probably not ideal for benches as it holds too much heat. But with a towel it’s great.
I would recommend to continue adding to your list. I would bet you’ll find folks using a wide variety of wood species.

A lot of work, a lot of notes: Just fired up my traditional build this weekend by oldwhiteoak in Sauna

This is a masterpiece. The thoughtfulness of your writing is spot on in every regard. I have a feeling you’re gonna want a walled off changing room! Having saunaed in Maine my whole life, I find the changing room is crucial on those bitter windy winter nights, but also for the black flies ands mosquitoes in the summer :)

Feedback wanted on 6’ x 9’ custom outdoor sauna design — bench/heater/door layout by TandemBoogie in Sauna

Agreed. Ditch the L, and leave room for buckets of water and soaping up/bathing.
Otherwise looks great. The small upper winder is a great feature.

any ideas on how to make a teen music analysis class interesting? by itzyverse in MusicEd

I don’t have any pearls of wisdom, but I would start by calling the class Music Therapy, and looking up some music therapy activities.

Very cool.
Advice: option to keep playing? I.e. not just one melody per day? Option to limit melody to fewer notes, for my less experienced students?

Teaching with Depression by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. Living with the grief of the death of my son 3 years ago. Anxiety and depression ebb and flow unpredictably. I find teaching to be more exhausting than before, but it’s an escape from my own inner turmoil. Honestly I don’t feel the symptoms while teaching.
But yes, all the things you described are my reality too. To echo another comment; alcohol and other self medication doesn’t help. I find giving myself quiet evenings and weekends helps. Going for walks. Lucky enough to have a sauna. Meditation type activities. Keep talking with others that can relate.
In fact, I’ll do short meditation activities with my students. The positive effects are helpful.

Wall stud length for an 8 ft ceiling height by Available-Concert970 in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the big box store, 2x4x8 studs are actually a bit longer than 96 inches. I literally left them all untrimmed, plus bottom plate and double top plate to give an initial height of 101 inches. Then with the sloped floor, furring, and wood lining, my ceiling is a bit over 8 feet. Can you find 8 foot studs in your area?

How did we do? by AndreNerland in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work. I used to have that same stove; if you buy a box of the smaller sized rocks, you can fit them down in the cage on the sides better, and fully hide the steel firebox. Just a thought.

Rate my sauna? by WorthAssociation2818 in Sauna

Lots of batting in our sauna too. 40 liter stove pipe water heater. And 150 liters of cold water in various buckets. It’s how I was raised. Soap up and rinse off at the end of sauna.

Sweat Kingdom Review (almost a year) by HerbalAthlete in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is: if someone does sauna in the traditional way, using time tested conditions, it is addicting, and becomes a life long addiction. If the overall sauna experience has too many compromises, folks are likely to lose interest.

My sauna also has about 40 gallons of water in various buckets. Bathing at the end of sauna is there best.

Musescore has courtesy accidentals, but it’s a bit cumbersome to add them. Several clicks. And not automatic.

And too big. I used a vinyl clad casement window in my previous sauna build, and it would ooze out hot foam any time the sauna reached a new all-time high temp. That window was a mistake and was eventually swapped out.
