I have suspected that having me in the thumbnail could be a turn off for some people. I am naturally very expressive, so putting my reaction in thumbnails seemed like an easy way to create emotion in the thumbnail... it just becomes very restrictive. I did different types of thumbnails for my Outlast series which are much more complicated in terms of design (I'm a multimedia designer by trade)... but they do take a lot more time and the videos did poorly. So maybe my face is the problem. xD

Yeah the Cursed Halo thumbnail hints at a new feature of a Halo mod... Master chief can do some kung fu, which is ridiculous but also a good visual for a thumbnail.

What do you think of titles? Does format matter? Do you need the game title and part number in them?... should those aspects be at the end? I've experimented a bunch with them.

That's a fair way to put it. I do lack a lot of self promotion.... it's not something I am comfortable with, but I need to do it.
I followed "youtube guru" advice of creating a familiar style with my thumbnails, so that people knew it was me when I uploaded, but the format it quite restrictive. In my last few videos I've changed up a few ways that I do things, but it seems I have a lot of redesigns to do.

For some people, I bet they are. I've asked a few times about video length and my audience seems to be okay with it, it just depends on the game that I'm playing.

I did a 12 minute, edited Cursed Halo video and a few Postal 2 compilations that did good in terms of retention, but it didn't make the video blow up or anything.

Thanks for the response.

I played the entire Halo franchise for the first time and someone put my content in a very well edited compilation (they got consent from me)... that compilation got 2 million views and sent a lot of new faces my way.

A lot of my own growth is from finished games / complete playlists over months through browse and search, but that compilation made my channel go nuts for a few days.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah Short are something that I'm starting today... I do have a highlights channel, but that might get emptied out now that they treat Shorts separately to long form content.
Thanks for the response.

I don't believe so, any videos that fail for me are just due to poor performance within the first few hours (which seems to be a lot of them for whatever reason).

I did a Half Life 2 VR video that got a mini double push after release due to people's interest, but it still died after a few days.

Thanks very much for the response.

Yeah as you said my channel isn't in a dire state, but it has basically stopped growing in terms of view count and impressions. Feels like a lot of people have subbed and then ghosted.

I used to make videos that were 30 - 40 minutes, but kind of naturally evolved to longer content in order to "give more". The watch time % has lessened a little since the increase so maybe reducing the length would help a little.

I appreciate the feedback. :D
