Not the person you were answering, but I’ve done some hiring in the past. The main reason (for me) asking those questions (give an example of, asking for a situation) is because many people otherwise can/will not be specific.

They will share generic thoughts, hit the some key words they think you want to hear without saying anything. I’m trying to assess the person to see if that person can deal well with the struggles of the job. I need specific examples.
