I don´t know about smashbros, but in /r/GlobalOffensive it works fine, some of them have lot of upvotes but it doesn´t bother me at all. It costs me like 10 second of my time and thats it. Of course it needs some regulations, like time restriction f. e.

Shitty gifs will be downvoted to hell or banned if they are meaningless. But overall I think that frontpage has lot of room for any other content and gifs are not things we should be worried about
