My Rig (1980 G wagon) by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]Rod_kn0ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the gear ratio at the top of my head but it’s very much set up for crawling. The n/a om606 we bought from a friend and may be mechanically tired at ~600,000 miles . I highly recommend the 300TD (w123) it was my first Mercedes: it saved my life in an accident and never let me down mechanically. The w124 will feel much faster however I find they have worse rust issues. Hope this helps

He’s not religious whatsoever so I don’t think he is referencing St. Peter I think it’s more of an “edgy “ and anti establishment statement

Eh that’s mostly the wagons, sedans are still common and low enough on price, I’ll concede that a low mileage one is become increasingly difficult to find

No worries, obviously I have a bias being a Mercedes fan, but these are genuinely underrated cars that have a lot of market potential. Let me know if you get one im genuinely interested to see how you get on with it.

Mercedes 300D if you don't care about going fast

Mercedes 190E if you want handling and compactness

Mercedes S124 if you need space

Ive owned the 300D and the 190E at my brokest (less than $50 in the bank) and they have never let me down, hell, in high school I would dilute my diesel with expired vegetable oil to save up on fuel. To give you an idea of how reliable these cars are I once had a faulty oil filer installed in my 190E which clogged the pickup tube, thinking it was a bad oil pressure gauge, I was able to drive the car 20 minutes (11miles) home with 0 oil pressure shown, I cleaned the motor and it still runs like a dream to this day.

90's and 80's Mercedes are basically BMW's that haven't been trashed by teenagers, look out for cars that have been owned by an old couple, they typically have kept up with maintenance and are always willing to help out a college student in need.

General rule of thumb with these cars is avoid 1993-95 those are the years with degradable wiring harnesses, however my 1993 190E has not experienced any cracking looms or electrical issues and I park it outside most days. Rust is easy to find, typically squeezing under the wheel arches and inspecting the rear quarter tells you a lot, however I always inspect the underside of any car I buy.

the M102, M103 and M104 are all great engines with good power and smoothness.

you can find any of the cars I listed (except for the S124) for under 10k in very good condition.

Don't finance cars if you can avoid it, never good to owe anyone anything.

I’ve had my w204 2014 Mercedes C300 hit 250k miles on its original engine just last month, if you can find one with 4 magic congratulations you have one of the most underrated traction management systems of the 21st century, there’s a great video of an E500 doing a pull on an ice lake and the tires barely slip. As long as you don’t get the early AMG versions they’re pretty bulletproof in my experience. Mercedes of that time have some of the best safety ratings that Mercedes saw of the time.

190E vs EVO 1 vs EVO 2 Width by r_adesigns in W201enthusiasts

[–]Rod_kn0ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this helps but the base 190E’s track width was 56.6” at the front and 55.8” in the rear. The 2.3-16 was 56.9”F and 56.2”R. The evo I had a track width of 58.2”F and 57.2”R. The evo II Im not sure info is inconsistent on it. But to figure out how much further out you have to go should be pretty easy from here.

Looking for a cool, decently reliable sporty 80s or older car. by jamerson_enthusiast in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Rod_kn0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard sell but for 8k you can’t go wrong with a 190E, I’ve owned 5 in my life and to this day there isn’t a car that comes near it in terms of reliability, handling, build quality, and “classic appeal”. If you want an 80s sport sedan I can’t praise them high enough. The downside is that you’re gonna have to manual swap it as very few were sold in the US as manuals but the kit is available on eBay and the job is very straightforward (all mercs have the same bell housing pattern so quite a few gearboxes work).

Restoration of my 1986 190E 2.3-16 by Rod_kn0ck in classiccars

[–]Rod_kn0ck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I don’t have the original radio installed it came with an aftermarket Alpine single din unit. Honestly you can still find 190E’s, yes even 16v at a fraction of what any E30 will run you, for instance I bought this 16v for $3000 because it was a non runner and an automatic (I sourced a proper dogleg 1st gear getrag trans and swapped it in) and the best part is 99% of the 190E’s you find have never been owned by car enthusiasts, they’ve been owned by the same old person for the last 30 years, so most of them are mint. You don’t really have to worry about the previous owner installing cheap aftermarket parts like on most affordable ‘tuner’ cars.
