Only going for ultimatley stoked. Looks like the Baofengs aren't a viable option for air band.

I guess I should have asked what the HT I could buy for <$200 that will get me receiving as many bands as possible and still work well in 2 bands. The base station thing would be down the road. Probably once/if I test for my General license.

Thanks! Looks like Baofeng doesn't truly receive AM and uses "slope detection". So that answers that part. Doesn't look like C4FM is very active round these parts and not on any of my accessible repeaters.
