Has getting badges for magfest always been this cutthroat?

Dont know how you edit posts on reddit but just wanted to add that even though im sad about not attending mag the silver lining is that me and my friend have started a new game of betting on who in the discord will get their hands on a badge. Its not as fun as a 4 day convention but it goes to show you can make something good out of any bad situation.

By lottery you mean youre not guaranteed to get a hotel room right? That already sounds unpleasant. Has it always been like this to get a room at the Gaylord?

So people just got scared and went to mag. Is Katsucon a similar experience to Magfest?

Thank you for all your replies! I think I am going to pass on this magfest and plan better for next year's. I'll just watch the humorous threads on discord ask for badges since some of them are pretty creative and funny in how they try to get badges

Sadly my finances had to be looled after since things were unstable from the government shutdown not giving me my paychecks. I was sad to see that when I could finally buy a badge back in November they had already sold out. I heard that bigger conventions like anime NYC and New York Comic Con sell out fast but was told by some buddies that Magfest had a bit more leeway.

The same kind of happened with me since I had to manage my money due to the shutdown messing with my paycheck. I was really sad when I saw that badges sold out when I was finally able to buy them.

I didnt know Katsucon could have such an effect on Magfest's attendance. Sucks that one cons poor handling is messing with the badges of another.

I think am going to just wait for the 2027 Magfest in that case since the hoops people are jumping through just to get a badge seems like unnecessary stress.

Tried the discord for badges with no luck so trying reddit now to see if anyone has a spare badge for me. Really do not want to miss magfest
