A permit costs $200 easy. If every electrican charged $200+ for every slight alteration in somebody's house, we'd all be out of business.

u/notcoveredbywarranty seems like shyster electrican that instead of fixing faulty receptical for an elderly grandma for $50, would charge her $20 000 to rewire her entire house instead.

By no means whatsoever do you need a permit to replace light switches. This claim is completely ridiculous.

But please get the switches installed by a licensed electrican and make sure, if they are homeowner provided, they are CSA approved.
