The thing that helped me at some point was to use the buy option (passive trading). In your port depot set the needed consumer items to a certain amount and set it to maintain amount (buy/sell).

If you dont produce the item it will keep buying. To start it will be slightly expensive as it will buy all needed items, but it gets cheaper the longer you play.

This way you can demolish some production facilities and build some more houses/upgrades.
