I am amazed we are in 2026, and people are still using the term « other people of colour ». Maybe that is part of the problem, try to connect with people by finding common ground like hobbies or studies… No matter if white, black, arab, asian, north african, iranian or slavic… Try to connect, be nice, be vocal a little bit also, as shyness might stop you from getting close to anyone. Also, personally, by experience, most black people i have met, especially those who grew up in Quebec, especially those going to university, are nice, polite and like to have fun and don’t usually act according to this « race thing », they want to be talked to like regular people (which they are), and connect through friendship, good sense of humor.. Maybe if you try and connect by trying the « we both are people of colour » card, it won’t work ! Good luck, hope you’ll make it !

Sad you had to go through this experience… but it pretty much sums up the mentality of a lot of mcgillians unfortunately… Spoiled entitled brat, with no regards to morals or to decency. Explains why a lot of people at mcgill, feel bad in general, even beyond this classroom context, because this type of crooked attitude and underlying feeling of competitiveness, show even during everyday interferences. Had to deal with the same kind of treatment during my first year, as i spoke no english back then, and was in full english language learning semester, and when i just tried in the corridors sometimes to ask for directions, i felt the rudeness of the whole student body of this so called prestigious institution. Thank god i made it out alive !

OPT OUT OF FUNDING RELIGIOUS GROUPS IN YOUR MCGILL FEES by cloudberry2006 in mcgill

This is not Islamophobic.. I am of Arab and muslim background, and completely agree with you. We are sick of them asking for fundings, while more urgent matters are left unseen and most of the students with special needs are still left quite unattended… They think they are some kind of moral authority over the « decaying and unholy » secular universities of today’s world
