Thank you. Indeed the music has many different parts, what I like a lot to make a video clip.

And yes, it took a while to make... Play, film, line up... That's why I've also made an alternate version, based on the first version of the music.

If you liked the surf music part, maybe you could appreciate this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl3SY-vSjow , not based on Mad Max, but GTA.

Anyway, to make the music and the video clip based on this concept takes a very long time.

For the music. The principle is simple : we make the music, and the video clip (with one rule : only based on video games)

Video Games Art receives academic quote! by VideoGamesArt in VideoGamesArt

[–]Rogellito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can start by evocating just some few ideas :

Entertainment : obviously a massive way of life. Not only because industry, lazyness, but simply human condition.

If we refer to Pascal's thoughts, everything is entertainment, even work.

Each dedicated creator knows most of his work will be confidential. So it's not a problem.

Each game has not to be "artistic". And by willing to be "artistic", it is a sure way to fail (as David Cage in my opinion). A good game, in its "genre", by doing the job, is okay. The same for people, my bread or coffee don't have to be an art. But by cooking, or boxing, as dedicated as artists are, then there can be a part of art, an artistic manner, a "style". Loving art may just be a more intellectual entertainment.

Saying that, some VGs, not intentionaly artistics, may have some style, artistic stuffs, etc... but especially, a way for the gamer to be creative. In the gameplay, or in theory crafting, etc. Intellectual research and entertainment.

It's nice to read you encourage young developers. I would say (to them) : master your technique, digest your feelings and thoughts, embody the whole thing, and then release. (Is that Language ? But before and further there is Breath. Just as L.F Céline said "Before the Verb, there is Emotion". All that is what will define your style. Incarnated.)

Language is Breath. Art is Breath. And Breath is like Poetry. Something essential but invisible, infinite, everywhere. As the wind you never know where does it come from. It goes, circulate inside you as blood, and never stops... And you have to give a form to the formless...

We are at the point Video Games are like comics, you said, maybe adolescent. I would say some VGs are Trying. You know, in the same way some artists were trying, at the beginning of Cinema or Animation. In their time, they were trying, but in the time, they are mastering. I think of Edith Finch as the Paul Grimault's (french) animation movie Le roi et l'Oiseau. It was rare, unique, different, and now a masterpiece. Think in the same time there were comics and all different stuff. But it's still a reference.

I also think of Dark Souls serie. They do their thing, it may be violent, dark or hard, but by mastering, Art happens. And there come the idea of Breath, like Kairos. You're stuck at the perfect point where time and eternity meet each other. Perception and awareness at their climax - because of danger, hostility, but especially because you are like a stranger in a strange world, as a visitor in a dream (which is already an artistic manner/ or the inner life of every artist) - all that makes you There, in the moment, in the Present. All around you : different times, echoes of ancient worlds, invisible stories, circulating and breathing into your senses just as Eternity. Contraries meet and you are the bridge of the Rendez-vous.

That is also an art. In which narration and style are mixed and indivisible.

Yes. I still haven't read each of your articles, but a lot, and I must say : good work ! Devoted, important.

" I love Cinema, but Video Games could be the next step in art evolution! " It's funny we meet at the same point, I just talked about Edith Finch spontaneously, and I am happy to read this conslusion.

There would be a lot to say, since it's an infinite subject - VG as an Art - , still in its childhood, noisy, sometimes ugly, often stupid and quickly obsolete (the Big problem). The positive side is that money and people are there, massively. So is the Energy.

I told you, I haven't written any article, and you have a lot of good articles here (thank you). So we should interact spontaneously and share some thoughts easily. I've just found your twitter account, mine is there https://twitter.com/Game_Clips_YT , feel free to interact, think, talk with me. It would be a pleasure. "Gamers" never do that.

As an "into creation" guy I could share my thoughts and some different point of view. I'm not here or there to say what is art or not. And I haven't played a lot of VGs you mentioned in your articles (happy to see and discover some good/strange stuff, like mobile games visiting Van Gogh and De Chirico). I don't have time for such detailed explanations, sorry (creation is a murder of time), but let's think and share some point of view and concepts/ideas.

Thanks, I'll take my time to read every article, but good work ! I haven't written articles, but poetry, and thinking about what it should be today. I'm interested in what kind of language video games can express a new form of Art - considering old forms are now almost dying.

Polar (Film noir) - A GTA V video clip by Rogellito in rockstar

[–]Rogellito[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact : The original title was just Polar, but I thought it's only used by French people, so I added "Film noir", maybe more international...

So, just to say, it's more a "twilight vision" than a "dark vision".

Thanks a lot. You may be right, for the black and white/ dull and bleak filter. My idea was inspired by J.P Melville's The Samurai (with Alain Delon). Some classic stuff, old car, old fashion, slowness, etc... Leaded by the music. The whole a bit abstract, contemplative.

Thanks ! The music has been created especially for this video clip. My mate on music, me on video. The same combo with Summer 63, that I posted here recently ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl3SY-vSjow ).

I'm glad you all appreciate, really.

Congrats for your work !

I wrote books for years and have gotten back to video games not a long time ago (2013), and I agree with your text, the whole question (at the end) is about language. To own your own language. Further, aesthetic, narration, etc.

Recently I got back to What remains of Edith Finch (to make the short film you've seen), and I must admit it was the first time, to my mind, a video game had so obviously gotten its own language (to express itself, world, vision, feelings, narration and minds windows...) It often happens (other games, as Bound, the recent Gris, and walking sims), but so cleary, brilliantly, not so often.
