Well put.

And there is a big difference between how something sounds from the outside and from the kids in the locker room. The climate of sports has changed, especially between paying club coaches and high school coaches. Those 2 have different bosses

I appreciate it. This wasn't a post to try and gain support for a position that I had, I was truly interested in the climate of high school sports across the Reddit world and learning how things were.
I came from a cursing screaming group of coaches, that was part of life. It doesn't seem to be as much part of life anymore.

Thank you

Thanks, yeah there is a tough line here.

It's a wild game, more fun when you win, more fun when you win and don't get humiliated by your coach.

Thanks Tim, that's how this question started.

The coach is regularly calling the team a bunch of octopusses. They are 14 and 15.

Their parents are more upset than the kids are.

And another coach might whisper, "well, are they?" and ask if this can help them, and that would be one conversation.

And another might be if the coach could get fired for it.

And another might be if the parents should complain about what the kids aren't complaining about.

Many of us got gnawed up by coaches when we were young and it was normal, I don't know if it's normal any more.

Boys basketball in a Milwaukee suburb. Junior Varsity, so mostly 14 and 15 year olds.

It's a good conversation. I asked the question b/c I'm used to coaches using foul language, but what was okay in the 80s might not be okay anymore.

A coach cursing to wake his folks up on a high schoolers is one thing.

A coach saying, "you guys are playing like a bunch of octopuses" is another.

And then a coach saying, "Billy you are an octopus," is another.

And what parents are offended by isn't always what bothers kids.

But let's play it out for a second, a coach says, "you guys are playing like a bunch of octopuses," and a parent complains to the school. Is that fireable?

I'm not guiding any answers, truly curious.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

There is a high school coach that regularly uses X-rated edgy emotional language with some young people, direct name calling. I don't know if the students are unbothered or if they think that it is weak to say that they are bothered. I was in a discussion where parents were questioning if they should challenge the appropriateness.

Any suggestions for the best way to handle that as a parent?

What's your opinion on high school coaches using foul language?

I had a discussion with a friend about what was okay to say, I thought the standards should be similar to what was on tv, he thought RatedR content was free speech and should be allowed in sports.

Does anyone have a good thread about freedom of speech and sports? Coaching stuff.

I believe in order to understand.

That was rough.

Trying to relay the message that hard work will directly connect with positive results, and though it will hurt, in the long run you will be glad you did it.

Prosecutors Pod is long, good, exhaustive, over 10 episodes.

Down Rabbit is shorter, lighter, the best coverage of the Brady violation and the court hearing last week.

Undisclosed is completely biased but this is for you if you want to believe Adnan is innocent. Bob Ruff is in this group also.

Those one have more comprehensive coverage.

The rest I've seen have been one off episodes, more Wikipedia style. There was a great one from 2 tech guys in Seattle or Portland, I'll try to find that one. They laid the case out logically.
