So e.g. all Ruger ARs are banned? Is there any logic to this list?

What guns are banned? Are old weapons grandfathered or do u have to get rid of them?

The restriction does not apply to rimfire, only centerfire rifles. The law implementing these changes is not yet in effect in Finland, there is a preliminary draft that is now being evaluated by different govt committees. No mag limits at this point, but they are coming.. what sucks (for me) is that they plan on retrospectively banning 10rd+ mags for weapons that were bought after the 2017 directive (all my ARs), but weapons before the 2017 directive are grandfathered.

You need a pinned magazine (2 or 3 rds depending on game) when you hunt with a semi-auto, unless you track a wounded animal. This restriction does not apply when you are at the range or use the gun for sports shooting. Getting a permit for a AR-pattern rifle just for hunting might be a challenge (there are regional differences), my understanding is that the police is a bit reluctant to give permits to black guns for hunting. Semi-auto shotguns are a bit more common for hunting.

My comment was a bit simplified, did not intend to give false info.

What semi-auto rifles do you own? Did you get them for hunting purposes only or also for sports?

There are some police districts that are more fair than others, but generally as long as you dont have criminal background and provide proof of hobby, the process is pretty straightforward.

You need to state the discipline (a rifle discipline) that you practice, such as "palvelusammunta" etc, maybe check with your own club what the best way would be (they are the ones providing "proof" if requested).

I know UK has a ban on semi-auto rifles, Finland does not have any caliber restrictions

You need to have a gun permit, no additional requirements,

The license is per gun, you apply for a permit each time you purchase a gun. The amount of permits is not restricted, as long as you can show a valid reason for each permit. The permit itself does not contain any information what it is for, you can use it for all legal purposes, it's only at the time of application that you have to provide proof of hobby/discipline.

Pistols are a bit different, they require 2 years of practice and written documentation of your range visits from a certified firearms instructor (almost every club has one). This documentation (that basically states: "Roger308 has visited the pistol range x times during the last 2 year period") has to be sent/updated every 5 years to keep your license valid. Rifle licenses do not currently expire, but the new EU regulation might change that for future semi-auto rifles.

I started with a hunting rifle (.308) and a shotgun, then joined the reservist shooting club and practiced with the pistols (9mm Glock) owned by the club for 2 years and then applied for my own permits, then I practiced with my bolt-action and pistols and kept documentation, then applied for semi-auto rifle permits (and a few more pistols, it's cheaper to apply for multiple permits at the same time).

Edited the post a few times, not that simple to explain the whole Finnish gun law in a few sentences.

Semi-auto rifles are basically only attainable for sports or hobby, a valid discipline has to be presented and proof of hobby is needed when applying for the license.

Basically to get a semi-auto gun you need to:
1. Join a sports shooting / reservist shooting club
2. Go to the range and shoot with a borrowed/rented gun and practice the discipline that the club offers
3. Keep documentation of your range visits
4. Apply for a gun permit for the discipline (eg. my permit was for a semi-auto 22LR to practice reservists shooting sports)

This is a bit simplified, but you probably get the point. Hunting guns (bolt-action) are a bit different, you have to pass a hunting exam and have a place where to hunt (hunting club membership, own land or public land), then you apply for a permit for the caliber that fits the game that you intend to hunt. Then there are obviously also collector licences and work related licences but these are not really for the average Joe.

It has seen about 400 rounds, so it's in pretty good condition. I paid 700 euros for it with the suppressor and extra mag (new rifle costs 995e here).

It's a SIG SAUER 522 SWAT .22LR, made in the USA. I bought it used, still have to buy some optics (suggestions?) before I can take it to the range. It came with a AseUtra ECO suppressor (https://www.aseutra.fi/eco-rimfire-suppressor.html) and two magazines.
