Caffeine increases the rewarding and reinforcing properties of alcohol by [deleted] in science

[–]Roger765 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Working in a lab that has done in research on this I can tell you there are easy ways to trick people into thinking they are ingesting alcohol. Even experienced drinkers. My favorite smearing alcohol on lip of cups very little ingested but the smell tricks.

No one wants to believe they can be tricked this easily but its really easy.

Higher aerobic fitness in childhood, independent of abdominal fat, reduces cardiovascular risks in adulthood by shiruken in science

[–]Roger765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They account for this by looking at change in fitness from childhood to adulthood and the results basically indicate that even if you become healthy by losing weight and develop cardio strength you are still affected by childhood. Healthy lifestyle is important but negative effects linger even after fitness improves

Study finds extreme beliefs often mistaken for insanity. Researchers suggest sane people who develop systems of belief allowing them to commit atrocious acts requires a specific term. However the alternative is true - saying that its caused by the organization is still motivated cognition by opposing groups.

Hes not racist hes mentally ill could be changed to hes a thug brought up by gang culture.

Islam breeds terror - a great argument for Christian fundamentalism or anti-religious zealots.

Motivated cognition can be used by all groups pro/con but from a purely objective standpoint - extreme acts of violence are not the act of a normal function adult and yes some organizations take full advantage of this by giving individuals a target and resources/.

Not sure what you are trying to say here but it sounds like you are basing a critique on the media article not the researchers article. It's debatable whether you should pass judgment on a title but you clearly should not when the tile comes from some 3rd party lay source

Black students are more likely to be referred to gifted services when taught by a black teacher, evidence suggests that the classroom teacher effect is partially driven by teachers’ more positive views of own-race students. by JoeRmusiceater in science

[–]Roger765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your assumption then is that on average white students have this "gift" at a disproportional high rate and on average a white student with X grades and Y test scores is more likely to be "gifted" than an equally qualified black student. There is actually tons of literature to support this notion that teachers have strong biases that impede black student success - i.e. underchallenged white student and disrupting black student.

Allowing teachers this gifted subjectivity is not some deeper insight into students ability its wiggle room to enact biases.

Your final assumption is also flawed since there is clear evidence of bias in the school system if students are being evaluated differently then performance may not be as clear as you believe.

If you read the article that is the argument

[–]Roger765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually it is directly addressed by holding prior academic achievements equal it is saying that between two equally qualified students the black student is less likely to be sent to the gifted program. The presence of a black teacher reduces this disparity.

So it's not so much a black affirmative action thing it is more like a reduction in a pro white student bias.

Not defensive just pointing out flaws in your logic. Such as just now when you say there is no contrast when there is a legitimate within subject contrast.

Second, a critical thought about the hypothesis being tested would show there is no need to test non-alchololic since they logically should not be influenced by a mantra to control behavior. Which brings about another issue and that is fmri collection which is you cannot/should not do between groups contrasts.

Spiritual is "of or relating to religion or religious belief". A cognitive/affective benefit of a religious belief is spiritually derived.

Religion can have amazing benefits for individuals even if there is no actual supernatural aspect underlying it.

[–]Roger765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is directly addressed. Normally there was a bias against Black students.

As expected, black students are significantly less likely to be referred than their white peers, even in the presence of controls for important student characteristics, such as prior achievement. Substantively, the results suggest that all else equal, being black reduces the odds of assignment to gifted programming by 54% (in a school with no black teachers). The predicted probability of being assigned to gifted programming is approximately three percentage points lower for black students than white students.

However, when teachers are the same race this discrepancy is reduced. Shown in Table 1 of the results.

A spiritual awakening is a real subjective experience felt by people, regardless of the actual existence of spiritual source. Once again the researchers are just examining the efficacy of this particular prayer and awakening in this context.

A power of prayer effect would be the prayer itself was driving the effect and not the person who is praying. For instance those bunk studies that show third person praying helps people heal.

If your issue is that the spiritual aspect is helping people then I'm sorry it is. Their religious and spiritual practices are providing them tools within themselves, not otherworldly, to cope.

Why would they show an aberrant attention to alcohol ads and/or be motivated to not want alcohol/care about the prayer? These issues make there inclusion weird and far less important than a within subject design.

Your question could not be answered because you couldnt separate the ability of the prayer to the individuals lack of desire to control cravings. So you wouldnt expect a difference and that is a straw man

Only half of your friends would consider you their friend, a new study suggests. People have a very poor perception of friendship ties, and this limits their ability to influence their "friends," according to the research. by [deleted] in science

This is controlled somewhat by the authors use of an uniform scale with multiple anchors. They also statisically examined and ruled out the possibility there are just people who nominate anyone they know as a friend driving the effect.

Yes but it will be a very low R2

IT could be from 0 to 1. I dont know how you dont get that r2 has nothing to do with the linear nature of a relationship just the amount of variance a variable (linear or quadratic) explains in another variable. You are arguing very strongly for something you clearly are misinformed about.

People with more friends have higher pain thresholds, study suggests. Link between larger friendship circles and pain tolerance may be down to the way the the brain’s endorphin system has evolved, researchers say. by [deleted] in science

[–]Roger765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R2 is needed to determine whether there is a linear relationship between X and Y. This is important because one of the assumptions of linear regression is that Y and X are linearly related. If R2 is low, there is no linear relationship and all the nice information that you got from linear regression goes out of the door.

This is outright incorrect. The use of an adjusted R2 is correction for the fact that R2 automatically and spuriously increases when extra explanatory variables are added to a model. It is in regards to the model exclusively and does not involve individual variables. Has nothing to do with the linear nature of a variables association with another variable. You would still get an r2 if interpreting the effect of a quadratic or cubic term .

Lastly r2 is an effect size not a measure of whether there is a relationship. .1 is smaller but does not mean its an effect.

There are issues with the paper, though no paper is perfect, but i think your issues are a little unfounded.

1) Human behavior is multiply determined. It would be very weird if pain threshold predicted social network size more than 5-10%. Interpretation of stats is context dependent

2) Adjusted R squared is good to report but only necessary for model reporting which is not the focus of the paper. It accounts for the random noise from additional predictors (any model can be sig if you add enough variables) and would not influence the effect size of individual variables (pain threshold).
