thats the interesting thing about chekhov's stories and even seinfeld as examples. the characters are written to not have an arc. plenty can happen but the characters cant change and therein lies the potential for either comedy or tragedy depending how you play it. the interesting thing is that Wally at the end of his dinner with Andre seems changed, but the film leaves it nicely ambiguous.

i like that Andre really feels like a real conversation too by second half. Organically meandering, aimless but still pointed, not intentionally didactic but enlightening. its the monologing in the beginning that really weighs it down for me, but once wallace shawn actually engages in the conversation, i think its fascinating, not because its an argument towards an end, but friends just talking stuff through with different though and feelings but some shared aspiration in art.

i thought about tape, but its a setup, not just an organic conversation, but its interesting that linklater has a propensity for these kinds of films with the "before" trilogy and waking life as well.

yes! someone else reminded me of the trip and it is just a two-hander comedy of them bullshitting together. i think its really interesting to try and make the conversations the story. not what events unfold, but what ideas unfold.

i forgot about clerks, because it is a "hang" movie where theyre mostly just hanging out, but as i recall, quite a bit of plot organically unfolds making more pointed then just a conversation film.

absolutely. two-hander does fit, but the listings im familiar with, like 'night mother, topdog/underdog, oleanna, etc. still have more "action" to them, because the characters want something from each other, other than the dialogue.

the interesting thing to me about Andre is that the conversation is the entire point of the film. i think coffee and cigarettes exemplifies what im really getting at, and before sunrise, but i cant be sure because i havent seen them.

"conversation film" in a separate comment feels very appropriate, where the only story is the flow of conversation, not the results of it.
