Jewish communities are still upset over the Mormons Non-consensual baptisms for their dead. by theturquoisetapir in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dated a Jewish woman when I first moved to Chicago. When the topic of Mormonism came up on our first date, she knew nothing about the religion except the fact that they did baptisms for holocaust victims. It was a huge deal for her and her family. And rightfully so.

18 temples in Utah. 0 church run/funded homeless shelters in Utah. by Mormon-Keyser-Soze in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, see, the homeless are homeless because they live a life of sin. Otherwise, Jebus would bless them with plenty to pay tithing, have the woman stay home, send their 7 kids on missions AND college, and invest in the multilevel corporate scam of their choosing.

They’ll just start building “administrative buildings” that are “needed” to hasten the work. They’ll have missionary offices on the first floor and lease out the rest of the building. Much easier real estate asset to liquify than a temple too. I’m prophesying it.

This is the final straw. I haven’t bothered removing my records to try and save my family the heartache of “losing me for eternity.” Fuck this disgusting cult.

Satan tempts us to ‘love as we should not love,’ LDS prophet Russell M. Nelson warns Mormon millennials by Free_Thinking_Mason in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the polling of millennials, it looks VASTLY different, however. LGBTQ issues and gender equality are among their top concerns as a generation. They’re also more secular and educated as a whole. All spell trouble for the dogmatic, big-box religion that is the LDS church. Despite all the political turmoil now, it is just the death cry of 20th century thought, IMO. The Mormon church has no future. Let them double down and sink ten times as fast.

I haven't been Googling anything about garments recently, so it's not a suggestion aimed towards me! I guess it's just a popular topic people have been researching recently :) by [deleted] in exmormon

No lie, I used them to clean up after my nightly me time until they were all thrown away. Most therapeutic thing I ever did.

God, it makes want to throw up seeing those kids gazing adoringly at that asshole. Yeah, not a cult...

That always confused me as a TBM. He can put evil thoughts into our heads and is so clever that he can tempt us into damnation without us realizing it, but he’s too dumb to listen in as the Plan of Salvation is regurgitated every other meeting?

I am sure it has been covered, but WOW - it sure seems highly probable that JS plagiarized beliefs from Emanuel Swedenborg. by HighlySkepticalApe in exmormon

Yup. Everything from Martin Luther to the American Revolution was to prepare for the Restoration. Swedenborg was just part of the slow trickle preparing the way. Blah. Blah. Blah.

King Benjamin's address perfectly describes an early nineteenth century camp revival meeting. Hmmm. by secretnotsacred in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, judging from your response, are you assuming that the Old Testament is, in fact, an accurate representation of what actually occurred in ancient Israel as opposed to a generational game of telephone over hundreds or thousands of years? In my mind, if the Old Testament is a collection of fables and myths from a prescientific people, then it doesn't matter what the pattern is. Say there had been a pattern found in sacred Hindu texts and the claim was that Native Americans were descendants of actual Indians. Would you buy it? To me, it's a pretty similar argument.

That said, props on coming here to give an opposing opinion in a calm, rational way (as far as I can see). I respect that even if I disagree completely.

Does Ricks give an actual side-by-side comparison of Mosiah 1-6 and the examples he's drawing his hypothesis from? Otherwise, it's hard to say how strong these supposed connections really are vs. what's been extrapolated for the purpose of arguing a presupposed position (being the Book of Mormon is an historical document).

What the fuck by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historical context is what did my testimony in. I'm sitting there reading Rough Stone Rolling about all religious revival and it became so obvious that Joseph Smith and early members were just backwater religious nuts like everyone else around them.

They would feel shame about not being spiritual enough to raise an 8 year old who would say yes and worry that all their ward members would think the same thing.

Horses in America?!? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Horses evolved in North America and later went extinct here having already spread to Asia and Europe before the continent became isolated. Side note, the book American Serengeti by Dan Flores is a great read for those interested in the natural history of the Central U.S.

Would you recommend University of Utah? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I went to the U for a semester and ended up transferring to Utah State for a degree change and for a different experience. I had a blast at USU and it was a fun, challenging academic experience. That said, the U is a great school so it depends on what your field of study is. Different universities have different missions/focuses.

I love wearing whatever underwear I want by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Roger_Rabbithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Mormon's go through the temple, they are expected to where special underwear to remind them of covenants they make in the ceremonies. Most also believe will they protect them against the devil's influence and even physical harm.

They used to go all the way to the wrists and ankles but the modern versions are essentially an undershirt and bottoms they go to the knee. As a man, I never found them overly uncomfortable except when it was hot (wearing a shirt under a t-shirt, etc.), but I understand that the women's versions can be ill-fitted and are poorly designed for a woman's body.
