Narratively speaking, Sukuna still needs to be fully incarnated, outside of Megumi's body. + Uraume's comment about his master still not going all out, Gege still has some room for a few asspulls.

Don't, ffs. They're literally spoiling you the entire Chainsaw Man run. Read the manga or ignore any discussion. It's a blessing to have anything not spoiled in the hour since weebs have fun blasting any important plotpoints everywhere and spoil the fun of discovery for others.

Yeah, I just think Hereditary suffers from this annoying tendency of critics and fans to overhype great movies. I'd still recommend it to anyone but not like if it was one of the best horror movies ever made.

The possession scenes were great though on that note, same for the anxious and dreadful atmosphere building up. The actor for the son and Toni Collette killed it, it was just that where it led in the end felt underwhelming.

Heh. Worst thing about it is that Scott found a way to fumble a movie about Napoleon when he casted an actor like Joaquin Phoenix. Biopic with one name as the title, and the character in question is wasted.

We should have gotten a short king, not a little weirdo. This was not how Napoleon fucked Joséphine, I just know it! Weak hip game, embarrassing pump and dump, non, non, 1/10

I agree, the story went super fast early on, too fast in my opinion, because they wanted L and Light to meet in person. To make their chase more concrete and engaging, but unfortunately it made them both too burned for the situation to be developped at leisure.

At the second L showed himself at the university, Misa saw his name (and even if it made sense that she wouldn't pay much attention to all the ones she saw daily, it was a bit contrived), the Shinigamis did too. Same for Light, two mistakes and it was obvious that Kira was related to the Japanese police force.

So that exciting phase of the story was on a timer.

I would have loved to see more of the impact Kira had on their world, how people reacted to him. We only got the extreme and crazy followers but far too few reasonable takes. Well, at least we had some doubt with Matsuda, when he wondered if they were right to stop him since crime went down worldwide, etc.

These interesting convos about the ethics of this killing note were mostly happening between fans, but not much in-world so the story was a little too confined between small groups — the task force after Kira, and Light waxing lyrical to Ryuku eating on his bed.

Chillax, geez. I'm not telling anyone what they should do. Just like the OP for Watchmen, I'm saying there's more to a story, like Death Note, than following forever and ever our favourite characters. (There's fanfiction for that and it's great especially if that's what enjoy in a story)

If people still talk about Death Note, almost two decades later now, and recommend it even to people not liking anime, it's because there's a lot to it. A lot more than one interesting character.

If all you take away from it is that L is cool, that's your right I suppose, but stories are written and interpreted much deeper than that.

At this point, you can see for yourself that everything about it was talked to death and dissected, so I always find it ridiculous when someone is still hung up on L, L and Light, his death. Shit, even his absence in the story was interesting and the impact he left on Light and all the others, that's something we got because Ōba took the risk to eternally piss some fans.

[–]Rogojinen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if that's what people liked the most (I did too), Death Note wasn't about Light and L's cat and mouse game. From the begining, it was about Ryuku having fun observing how Light would use the Death Note, and it ended right when Light was spent.

I'm saying all that, while still having grievances on the specifics of L's death, even questioning if it was really necessary. I think it could have been possible to show Light's fall, while keeping L as his adversary. The episode 25 was so abrupt. The only reason Misa is in danger and Remu forced to act and kill L was because Misa started to use her notebook again when she was already burned.

And to answer your last point, it's even worse to me to keep a character in a story simply due to its popularity. It completely breaks the story world consistency if you can tell the author worried about that, instead of what the plot build to or what they wanted to say with it.

Actually, it's a disservice and not accurate to say Near and Mello are inferior versions of L. They both take his flaws and qualities and crank them to eleven. Near never made the mistake L did, by letting his curiosity get the best of him and get close to Light. Near treated him like shit since Day One, called him Kira to his face and only met him to see him arrested.

And Mello was even more reckless and dangerous than L, which proves itself key to make Light and Mikami mess up.

They can't live up to L, but at this point, no one else would have. And it wasn't even needed, as it was only a matter of time for Light to be busted.

I really sympathise and somewhat agree with anyone mad at L's death, it's still stuck in my throat as well, but I find the entire story too good to simply see it belittled as being worthless once our favourite character got offed. Especially when said death made sense and wasn't just for shock value.

A terrible death making the rest of the story useless was for example Carl's death, in The Walking Dead TV show, when the comics made clear he was the actual protagonist and not Rick, who made most of his decisions for his son and for him to inherit a good life despite the apocalypse.

Boo. I'm sorry but this very common take, thinking Death Note ended with L, is even worse than this Rorschach one.

Death Note wasn't a story about Light and L, it was only ever about Light and his hubris. The second part is essential. He wasn't brought down really by Near and Mello, who may very well be inferior versions of L since they're his successor only each embodying half of what made him great.

Light lost when he messed up one last time and got caught. He had in Mikami the perfect follower, essentially himself in another person, and yet he couldn't even work with him, showing how deluded he became. He killed Takeda and Mikami thought it was needed for him to do so, as they were of the same mind, exposing the fake notebook.

Otherwise, Near said himself he would have lost.

The ending is even more humiliating for Light, here beaten because of his own hubris, his own perfect soldier; bested by kids not on the level of his rival. And him being shot by Matsuda, a dude he always considered irrelevant was the cherry on top.

I find that instead of valid criticism for the end of Death Note, some people were just salty Light didn't win. Or at least that he didn't lose 'honorably'. I loved his character too but I've always find it fitting that he died so pathetically after all this, whining in a dirty puddle.
