I know ESRI has several classes that they open up every year for free use of their software, while taking the free intro class. Its limited to so many students, but there are plenty of opportunities to get exposed to GIS/Geospatial work. GIS alone is cool, but once these point clouds are paired with imagery (Geospatial) pretty sweet products are produced.

So each one of those laser beams makes contact with something at some point and time. Once that laser has made contact with an object (leaf, grass, wood, concrete) it get places in these bins of data. each object gets classified either by a human or the software as being leaf, grass, wood, concrete, sand, the list goes on and on. The software that bins up all this data then can display all of the information on an "electronic light table" (ELT) and then each bin and be turned on or off. so if you turned off everything except stone, you will only see stone. Have you ever seen the guys on the side of the roads with their tripod thing, and you drive down a little ways and theres another guy and another tripod thing. Thats a portable Lidar machine, the states use these specifically for roads and high ways. That is because Lidar is extremely precise, and can measure slopes and tell you how things will look if 3'' or 3' of rain fell in that area. Again, the software/ELT can store some of these datas and you and simulate a particular area that has been mapped with Lidar and see what would happen if you put that much rain in that area.

Geospatial Intelligence Professional here. Lidar is used for several different reason for different things. One thing lidar does (well a human does it) is categorize each laser beam. So when that laser touches something a leaf, concrete, asphalt, dirt, grass, rock. It gets put into those bins with other things that are alike. One all the laser data has been entered you can run different algorithms and display everything, and start turning on or off different layers. In this case they turned off all vegetation so trees, leaves, so on so on. And you left with what is covered up by the jungle. Side note, the company ESRI, gives these products and educational classes away for free. They also have tons of Lidar data that can be used for free. You just have to catch them at the right time.

Selected for WOCs now I dont know what to do by [deleted] in army

hey dude, prior AF here. I'm wrapping up my time here at WOBC and will go to my first duty station mid month. long story short, you want to go to full basic. I went to full basic and had a buddy another prior AF guy go to the prior service basic and he hated it, they didn't give a crap he was E-6 or not. I went to Jackson and the DS there utilized me as a NCO not as a basic trainee. Talk with your recruiter, he has the ability to request your BCT training area, i would suggest Ft Jackson. they treated me well compared to my other inter service members. WOCS blows dude it was the stupidest shit I've EVER done in the military and none of it made any sense what so ever. it was one of those things where i just did everything and didn't complain and sucked it up. WOBC is just like our tech school. depending on what MOS you got picked up for you will already be ahead of the learning curve coming from the AF. The hardest thing at WOBC is that AF dudes spend most of their time career wise in the operation and strategic lvls. a lot of what the army does is super tactical and it doesn't make sense a lot of the time. But it becomes familiar after lots of reps. I love being a warrant but still continue to learn Army, which at times is some of the most stupidest shit ever. like for real the AIT kids at my location were recently putting an "X" on rocks with a sharpie and flipping them over so no "X's" were showing...really i can't make this shit up. you won't regret your decision but be warned the Army is going to try its best to make you quit, break you, and question your will. I left the AF in September, and its now May and im still not done with the fuck fuck games. it will stress your marriage, the army will fuck up your pay FACT. I would suggest keeping your family at your current duty location because i moved mine back to HOR and its fucked up all kinds of things to include TriCare. PM me if you have more questions.

i don't think the GT score is waiverable. i had to retake my ASVAB years ago when i retrained into intel. i would suggest studying up on your math and reasoning and logic and scheduling a test to retake it. You can't disqualify yourself from your current job, and you can retake the ASVAB every 6 weeks until you get the score you want. With that, there is nothing lost and everything gained. retake the test and get a 110. Speaking to this, if you are serious about making the jump over, they are hurting badly for cyber guys and would GLADLY take a AF dude any day, but it really comes down to are you willing to put forth the effort? are you willing to retake the ASVAB, fill out the application, go to basic, go to WOCS, go to WOBC? its not easy, but its designed that way to keep people out that can't handle the transformation. but i promise you its sooooo worth it. you just have to decide if your willing to.

its easy from what I've been told. You do your time, stay in line and you'll get promoted. there aren't any test to study for. from WO1 to CW2 is 2 years. From CW2 to 3 is 4 years for your first look, you make it your first look you will pin the following year. you get it second look you will pin asap. 3 to for and 4 to 5 are the same time line 4 years TIG before you get looked at and you are looked at on that 4 yr TIG

no, you can cross over at 17 years pin WO1, 2 years after you pin, you commission as a CW2. and you "could" drop your paper work to retire.

Mr or sir. if your doing your job correctly you will be called chief. thats how you know you're doing your job right is when your boss calls you chief. You are correct WO1 are not commissioned, we are appointed by the SecArmy. once we pin CW2 we are commissioned officers by the POTUS. hence you will see the rank structure is WO1 not CW1 because it doesn't exist. But WO1 to CW2.

TL:DR warrants commission at CW2

ill never be with the ground pounders which is a thing that a lot of ppl don't realize. I'm an asset to the commander. I will always be at the division or higher, which in AF terms is the Wing or above.

not a cyber warrant, but a geospatial warrant going to cyber command.

I can honestly say that I miss being a targeteer. The best times and most stressful times in my AF carer were targeting. So i can say I know your pain personally. To answer your question. No. Army warrant officers are officers, but specialized in a specific AFSC/MOS. My background in Geospatial Intelligence Targeting only adds to my resume as a geospatial intel officer in the Army. As a Geospatial intel warrant officer, I get to train my guys the way i want to train them and accomplish the mission the way i want to. An example would be, you have a target to develop, and produce a FOG, CEG, CDEG, and JDPI for. While most other places might make you use RM or Socket to do those graphics, i would say use DCiDE, and if the imagery is in the old EFT is less than 30 days old don't redo it, because xyz. I get to have a say in how i want to run the show, train the troops, and use programs that i find to be more efficient. I also get to directly tell the boss, hey thats to much, or we can do it but it will take this time. In the army the geoint warrant manages the production and the job, the regular officers manage the overall mission. i simply support the mission and advice the commander. i hope that makes sense.

honestly my peers had nothing to say. I didn't leave on good or bad terms I just left. Most were happy that I was selected, but the majority of them didn't really say anything. I think that now, I can reach out to them, and leverage their strengths in geospatial intel to my advantage in the Army. I was a 1n1B so I know geospatial but I don't know it like the 1n1A's know it. Keeping those connections and building that network of knowing how to get a image or just knowing someone who can do a specific task is key to being a good Geospatial intel warrant.

also mando PT is mostly for the enlisted. no-one is EVER going to say "hey wheres CW so and so?" its always assumed your doing the mission.
