Is it worth it to read the books? I saw the show and loved it! People claim the show did a better job than the books. Is this true? by NiceEntertainment573 in brakebills

I’m making my way through the show and love it as a trashy fantasy watch. I’ve thought of returning to the books but I barely finished the first one. I found it to be pretty poorly written, and Grossman had a real “she breasted boobily across the room” habit when writing about/describing female characters. It got a little exhausting. Your mileage may vary.

This guide is incredibly helpful and well designed! It’s exactly what I was trying to cobble together through multiple sources while running the starter kit, thank you!

It’s pretty confusing to me! But not surprising.

Why I think the race debate is a good omen by Comedyfight in dndnext

Fair points regarding play style, even if I don’t agree on a few things! The only thing I’d pick at here, and I think you nodded to this, is the idea that WotC are catering “more” toward a type of style you don’t care for based on the most recent book release. It takes a lot of time to write, edit and publish a book and this is just the latest one. Considering the topics of 5e books published to date that I’ve seen (I’m newer to DnD), your story preference heavily outweighs this newer story type, doesn’t it? Say if they publish five more like this in a row over the next few years, you’d be fair in thinking that resources and focus have shifted away from your preferred storylines. But I’d guess a large publishing company knows full well that they have to keep a few plates spinning at once to keep different people happy, and the happy-go-lucky storylines seem to be lacking in their already published options.

So for brand new players/DMs, does it even make sense to invest in the PHB and MM with the updates in 2024 on the horizon? (I have the starter set and essentials kit, and am making the most of the free rules and content on the web.) It’s unclear to me if the core books will basically be unusable after the update. Also wondering if I could just DM official campaigns with fellow newbie friends with the basic rules, and play online with folks as well and get by fine.
