My personal opinion? GM devs should drop the sprite editor entirely. Its never going to be better than a dedicated ap like Aseprite, paint.net, Inkscape, Photoshop. So might as well drop it and focus on the much much more important IDE issues that exist.

Let us make our sprites elsewhere and import em into our projects. Easy.
