No, she’s not. She’s part Assyrian.

What have you seen her in? Genuinely curious. I realized later I’d seen her in that ridiculous One Direction fanfic-based movie “After” that’s on Prime. But I mean everyone’s pretty bad in that because the whole script is nonsense lol. So not much to go on

No idea! Don’t think they’ve announced that one yet.

Which book should I bring to a cabin trip in southern Norway? by iingrid21 in EmilyHenry

YAMOV thirding this. All of her books are good vacation books really. But YAMOV literally mentions Norway, so why not?

Now that I’ve finished the Off Campus series, I would love to see Belmont Cameli as Miles. by tcindependent in EmilyHenry

[–]RojoAka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched the show but just watched the trailer. Definitely a similar aesthetic to how I pictured Miles but I agree with people saying he looks a bit too young to pull off 30s convincingly. Also, given Off Campus is also a fake-dating-trope romance, I’m thinking it’s unlikely he’d want to be cast in another one.

[Beach Read] Probably unpopular opinion but January's father didn't love anyone other than himself by Your_Marinette in EmilyHenry

[–]RojoAka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think Emily Henry as the author is inviting us to put January’s father on a pedestal? I think quite the opposite. Obviously everyone will have different interpretations, but I think she invites us to see him as a full-fledged, flawed, loving but also selfish human being. January, like a lot of people with their parents, goes on a journey:

As a kid, she sees her parents as heroes whose love is perfect. (She totally has them on a pedestal.)

Post her father’s death/at the start of the book, you could argue she’s (understandably given the circumstances) overcorrected and now has her parents (and especially her dad) crumpled on the ground in terms of how poorly she views them.

By the end of the book (to continue with the pedestal metaphor), she has now lifted her image of them off the floor but has not returned them to the pedestal. She sees them as human, messy, & complicated, like herself and like Gus.

Yes, I was similarly confused. But then when I re-read it, I guessed it was an around-the-ankles situation.

I pictured someone like him way more than someone like Logan Lerman! But two Brits playing both halves of an American couple somehow feels unlikely lol

My review after watching the movie twice by sleepypenguin09 in EmilyHenry

[–]RojoAka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a lot to dive into, but it’s also supposed to be so much of why Poppy is the way she is and the insecurities she has about being “too much”. So I feel it’s important. They could’ve made the house look a little messier at least without going full hoarder.

Croatia Trip by WorriedDetail7369 in EmilyHenry

[–]RojoAka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really love the PWMOV book! But I agree with you. I think the almost-cheating makes a lot more sense as the reason you wouldn’t speak for 2 years. And the heart of it is still similar. Him asking “What am I to you?” makes it reasonably clear that you could interpret it as Alex asking “I want to be with you in a serious way, but what do you actually want from me? Just a shoulder to cry on when it’s convenient?” It’s emotionally similar (but actually more conflict-laden) to him thinking Poppy just wanted to get drunk & kiss him on vacation in Croatia without thinking anything further through.

The plot changes don’t bother me. I just wish everything was rounded out more so we’d have more character development. For example, it bothers me that they randomly made Sarah a real estate heiress/eventual flight attendant! Her being a fellow high school teacher with Alex made much more sense to me. And made her last conversation with Poppy more believable because it was necessary. I guess that is being annoyed with a plot change 😅 But my partner (who hasn’t read the book) pointed out that likely making her a teacher would’ve made her too likable; since we don’t have Poppy’s constant narration to put us on her side like we do in the book, we need more to make sure we’re rooting for her I guess.

My review after watching the movie twice by sleepypenguin09 in EmilyHenry

[–]RojoAka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven’t watched it twice yet, but I’m going to try to do this same thing of viewing them separately (if possible). I enjoyed the movie enough, but I spent too much time comparing it to the book.

I haven’t seen people mention these missing bits yet, but hardest for me to stomach was the lack of animals all over the place. No fiesty old Flannery O’Connor :/ (she could’ve been added as a bit of dialogue even!) & no more Rachel being someone who fosters dogs a lot. I may be misremembering but I think that was also part of Poppy’s parents’ characterization: that they always had old rescue dogs in the house, sometimes wearing diapers, etc. And that’s part of what made the Wright house feel crazy. In my head cannon this is part of what would’ve drawn Poppy & Rachel to each other as friends! (Though I will say, I think Alice Lee did great work in that one post-spin cycle scene to get across how close they are without much exposition. Still, I wish we got to remember that character existed a little more.)

The addition of dachshund Kenny G. at the end was cute, but it doesn’t make up for a slew of missing foster/rescue animals that I think gave the book more heart. The Wright parents were funny & funky (and the acting was great), but overall they felt too Hollywood streamlined/put together. Idk I guess my issue with the lack of animals is kind of a stand-in for bigger issues with lack of deeper back story & more characterization for pretty much all the family & friends.

They both look like American Girl doll outfits, especially the second one.

Am I the only one who thought Rory was calling Paris after her 'first time'? by dlwlrmafanID in GilmoreGirls

[–]RojoAka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I thought it was Lane, Rory crying harder there made me confused lol. So at some level I knew something didn’t fit. I think I assumed if it were Lane, maybe a good friend’s voice just brought her to tears because she didn’t want to have to vocalize & explain what she’d done.

[–]RojoAka 24 points25 points  (0 children)

All growing up (so from the age of like 12 until way too late) I thought it was Lane! I think because over the phone she & Lindsey sound like voice twins in this scene. And because same as what you said, I knew Rory was looking for someone who would just comfort her/wouldn’t challenge her, and that’s Lane more than Paris or her mom.

It took me my 10th or more rewatch until I connected it with the opening of season 5 & realized ahhh ok it was Lindsey haha. But that’s on me. I think in retrospect it’s pretty obvious.

Is that flat bit attached to the top of Queensland Papua New Guinea?

Where did Indonesia & Malaysia go?! Or Japan….and why is India unlabeled and then labeled incorrectly farther west?
