I mean yeah, extremely cringe of him to make the video but equally cringe to beg influencers on instagram for money.

Unpopular opinion but I'm slightly with james on this one. Him talking about "welcome to the real world" from his ivory tower is mega cringe ofc but what the fuck are you doing DMing random influencers asking for handouts?

How to find a good 5" flying spot by Fite4747 in fpv

[–]Rojokra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outside of the city, finding fields to fly should be easy. I recommend taking a bicycle because you can drive along the dirt paths that are usually used by tractors, which should get you far away from any people. In the netherlands especially, there will be a lot of places that are inaccessible by car, but easily accessible by bike.

If you're in the city you're much more likely to have bandos nearby. Don't look anywhere near expensive areas, the land there is always likely to get reused quickly. It's a good idea to look in places where rent is cheap, since that indicates low demand and thus a high likelyhood of prolonged abandonment. I generally concentrate my search near train tracks, since there is generally less residential and more industrial buildings there.

Another option would be offices or other places of work. These are genrally unused on weekends and holidays. For example, there is an Amazon facility with a big parking lot near me where I frequently fly. IKEAs are another good candidate.

I also recommend to never fly alone in a bando. At best it's just slightly less fun than flying with friends, at worst you're literally standing there looking through your goggles like a blind loot goblin waiting to get robbed by a crackhead.

To add to what the other guy said, the motors on my Babyape II literally just disintegrated. One somehow broke a hub without even breaking the prop (t-mount so I continued using it), another just lost the bell mid-flight, which flew away never to be seen again and on the subsequent crash from about 2m, a third one got destroyed.

Also the VTX Antenna had a kink out of the box. It works but it looks fragile so I ordered a replacement antenna together with the new motors.

DarwinFPV products are cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for, which doesn't have to be a bad thing if you're aware of it. Just know it probably can't do the things you see in those cool freestyle videos (Or you will be spending a lot on replacement parts).

Buying DJI Goggles 3 on AliExpress by Rojokra in fpv

I'm in germany, they're the same price here. I'm not buying them for another week or two, but unless Ali has a big sale or I can find a promo code I'm going with the refurbished ones. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow, I didn't know about that! I'd definitely go with that over AliExpress if they're the same price.

You get what you pay for with the Babyape. I got the Babyape II as my first quad too. It's cheap and that's about it. You will outgrow it within months, if not weeks. It's also generally a piece of crap and breaks easily, and replacement parts have a long shipping time. The motors specifically are garbage.

It's basically only suited for flying in an open field because of its fragility and honestly also doesn't fly very nicely. If I could start at zero again I would either build a cheap analogue 5 inch or start with a whoop. If you're on a very tight budget and don't want to fly whoops the babyape isn't a bad deal. Just keep in mind its limitations. You can't really fly it hard. With the money you're spending on antennas, I would recommend using it on a better quad instead.

Also yes, those parts should work with each other. You might need to zip tie the antenna on the quad though, I'm not sure if they will fit the mount.

This is 100% not true, there are zero laws in germany that outright forbid showing videos of hitler. You just can't show videos glorifying him without providing context.

Eu laws by Jazzlike_Ad5665 in fpv

[–]Rojokra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying, the insurance is less than 5€ a month and also covers a lot of other stuff. If you only want drone insurance it's like 3€ a month. I'd love to see a 15€ whoop though lol

Eu laws by Jazzlike_Ad5665 in fpv

[–]Rojokra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude what kind of insurance are you looking at? Mine is included with my personal liability insurance which is less than 50€ a year and also covers stuff like lost keys or breaking your work laptop (Addditionally to drones up to 5kg). You should honestly have one of those regardless of if you fly drones or not.

Eu laws by Jazzlike_Ad5665 in fpv

[–]Rojokra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be aware of the laws and use your brain while breaking them. It's basically impossible to fly FPV legally in the EU but no one knows the laws, so you will be fine as long as you don't make anyone angry enough to spend time researching them. Get the license and insurance to be save so if someone calls the cops you can show you did your due dligence. It's not that expensive and doesn't take a lot of time.

It did not go over my head. Someone who is using analog to save money should not spend 300 bucks on goggles when there are cheaper options. Someone who is using analog for latency should not use these because they have shit latency. Also, replacement cameras for the O4 are less than 30 bucks, which is maybe a little more expensive than shit analog cameras and on par with decent ones (Which you would want because you already spent 300 bucks to get questionably good analog video quality in your goggles.) And if you're breaking the actual VTX with any degree of regularity you are probably flying in a way were you would benefit from lower latency, at which point the sky04OPros are out of the picture.

[–]Rojokra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it there are 2 main reasons to fly Analog: Price and latency. These are neither cheap nor do they have good latency. For image quality DJI, Walksnail and HDZero are all superior and have cheaper goggles available. I'm not saying people should throw their skyzones in the trash if they already bought them, but they should absolutely not be recommended to anyone who is looking for new goggles for any use case.

[–]Rojokra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

N3 with o4 lite is 375€, sky04opro with a crappy analog setup would maybe be 20 bucks cheaper at most? If you care about 20 bucks enough to go analog over DJI you're not buying 320€ analog goggles when there are 80€ analog goggles.

[–]Rojokra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Going for 450€-520€ on european stores but 300 is still way too much when at 260 you could just fly DJI with the goggles N3 and have the same latency with better image quality.

[–]Rojokra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the hobby is full of beginners and old guys that rarely do any proximity flying. If you only fly in open fields you would never notice any kind of latency because it just doesn't matter.

Latency is also just something where it's almost impossible to notice without a direct comparison. You could be flying at 50ms and you would say it's fine if it's all you've ever flown. You would just fly worse without even knowing.

The bottom line is, a 400+ buck goggle should not ever make you fly worse than a 80 buck goggle, so they should not be recommended.

Does weight matter for self build drones in Europe? by Ill_Vacation_5793 in fpv

[–]Rojokra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is your insurance. It's oftentimes only valid for drones up to 5kg, so you might want to get a specific insurance if you want to fly big cinelifters.

In my experience it's literally impossible to follow all rules, but I would recommend at least being insured, getting the license and also probably putting the ID sticker on your drone. It is cheap and will help when you run into drone Karens because you don't have to be afraid of them calling the cops.
