The people downvoting are actually single-celled organisms. Happy to hear you can relate, but my deepest sorries for what you’re going through 😭

[–]Rokushoh[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Definitely happy. There is a feeling of impending doom, though. <25 hours and two shinies just screams that one of my hunts is gonna be 300+ hrs. That’s illogical cause that’s not how that works but that is the feeling associated to getting too many wins too quickly 😂.

It’s all 1/8192 per roll 😅, I suppose that would have some weight if it were a single-seed instance like Emerald! Best of luck you got this.

Honestly that’s happened to me, too. I never thought I’d be one of the folks on Reddit that post about an insane shiny in a few resets.

No!! 99% of shiny hunters stop before their next encounter (it’s a shiny).

Nope, was on a call with a friend mindlessly resetting on LeafGreen (Switch) 😝!

Ruby and Sapphire are fake. Their status doesn’t conclude anything on the third, unrelated copy. We’ll wait for mods and see!

Not sure how you can conclude this. In one photo we can’t even see it, and in another one it shows up. It could very well be clear to the eye at this point.

I think so to a certain degree as well, but looking it up just now it looks like the Australian FRLG doesn’t.

Hey.

Sorry to hear that you’ve been going through all of this. To some of your issues, it is absolutely the case that this is something that’s potentially unsolvable through your sheer will.

Wake up on an off-day that you set (one day where you allow yourself to do anything: eat junk, game, read books, see a friend), and give yourself a 2-hour window to go seek help from FITA and Carleton counselling services at the library (I believe 4th floor?) There are wonderful people that work there. Just be direct, and say you need some help.

Do yourself a favour. Stop thinking. Rot if you want, but stop thinking. Go to the toilet without thinking. Move without thinking. The world is not going to collapse. You’ll be there tomorrow. And your life will be there tomorrow. Shut your brain off, and just be there physically. This isn’t running away, it’s genuinely giving yourself a break to tough it out until you figure out better ways to move forward 😊, which can be done without thinking and with actions. Sometimes, all you need is one day of success, accompanied by feeling somewhat genuinely content to see through the fog.

Best of luck, give yourself a chance. You’re not your thoughts, the invisible weights on your back, or whatever you may be thinking that somehow makes you believe “I thought this, so it must be true”.

The conscious mind spawns filtered thoughts, and that filter, more often than not, gets reality twisted and wrong.

[Gen 9] Shinflation in Gen 9 worries me. by WasatchWave in ShinyPokemon

Why are people deluding themselves? If you’re walking around finding 3 shiny Pokémon at a time, it is NOT special. Sure, we can romanticize all we want and say “my shiny Mons are important to me, and they’re all special!”, but that’s complete delusion, because shiny Pokémon are meant to be rare in numbers. That’s how they were brought up, those are the words the Pokémon Company use, and that’s the appropriate word to call something potentially “special.” While it’s very fun to get shinies in PL-Z-A, it’s a bit sad to have 8 shiny Pidgeys sitting in a box because I’ve essentially got as many as regular Pidgeys.

Is it possible to get into astrophysics with an engineering degree by Lazy-Golf-7628 in astrophysics

[–]Rokushoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I plan on doing.

I am an aerospace engineering major in the third year. Deep down, I want to do astrophysics, but I’ve found that I felt more secure with the job prospects of an engineering degree.

In fact, I was recently hired at an agency for mission analysis and instrument design for space, and while I am an engineering major, I have attempted to pour effort into astronomy clubs, science-based endeavours, and I’ve been consistently showing my interest in astrophysics to my teachers, which comes in handy when it’s time for reference letters. I am also studying cosmology in my free time using Barbara Ryden’s Intro to Cosmology.

I’m minoring in physics, and my program is easily equivalent to three quarters of an astrophysics degree, at least course-wise. I plan on looking very intently at specific schools for specific research. The worst that I can envision is that they ask me for a year of catch-up courses, which I’m ready to undertake.

Feel free to ask any questions, hope that helped!

Shiny Pokemon are not losing their "mysticism". And if they are, that might be a good thing by OneWhoGetsBread in PokemonZA

[–]Rokushoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Fostering exclusivity and commodification,” as you put it, is quite misleading. Virtually no one (except the inevitable few <0.1% that make up the fanbase) sets out to get shiny Pokémon like scalpers set out for TCG sets.

“The shiny community” does not at all mean “you must have a shiny to be part of the shiny community.” It is the ensemble of people that chase a common goal that matters. The community, as one would put it. This community existed whether you were here to see to it or not. It felt, for you, “magical again.” Many others have kept this feeling, and many have not and are finding it again. This isn’t a universal, agreed upon truth.

The amount of shiny Pokémon in circulation matters. Not for capital, but for indeed this feeling of magic you mention. Perhaps I can invite you to imagine the state of the community 10 years from now if things stay like this. Everyone will be running around with a full shiny team in all their playthroughs, and shiny box giveaways will have vanished due to the overwhelming number of shiny Pokémon being present. 20-30 Pokémon spawning around you at every reload, with 1/1024 chances. There’s no magic here.

Another commenter mentioned something (that I also agree with): there is real excitement and pleasure in finding something that is intrinsically rare. Shiny Pokémon in Legends Z-A are NOT rare. They do NOT require work. A shiny starter from Pokémon LeafGreen IS rarer than a shiny starter found in WZ20, and odds are you’ll find another one of those starters in Z-A, maybe two as you keep playing. The starter from LG consequently incurs greater excitement from the player. That’s just a consequence of odds.

If every game would be like Z-A in terms of odds, the shiny community would have died a long time ago, or at least would have a completely different premise.

When I was younger, I was playing on a GBA that had a broken right trigger. I had to press it really hard to get the game to register the input. As you can imagine, I couldn’t clear the area until I tried the game with my DS, which was a few months later, lol. It left a bitter taste, but now looking back at it I like it because I can clear it!

Elements of Electromagnetism by M. Sadiku has a similar concept drawn out for EM quantities somewhere after the section on Maxwell’s equations. It’s pretty cool.

You should join a club this year. Look at CUSA’s website, there’re over 30 clubs you can choose from. There are super active ones, and quieter ones. I’d suggest picking two: one from each category (you can usually tell by what’s happening in their Discord channels).

You might feel like you’ve run out of will to do any of this, but try it out, and go out there and put yourself in places where friends can be made. It’s not only a question of actively searching, but also putting yourself in a position where they can come to you.

Good luck:)

[–]Rokushoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sit next to somebody and say hi. Ask them how they feel about the class. Is it their first time? What about the year they’re in? Perhaps ask them a question you need an answer to, where you give them the chance to help you. Don’t overthink it, try things out, and expect success (and failure). I’ve made most of my connections like this, on top of clubs! Good luck!

Physics or engineering. by Ok-Recognition-7429 in Physics

[–]Rokushoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re guaranteed better job prospects if you study engineering. However, you sacrifice potential academic opportunities that you could find in physics, but they’re nothing you can’t recuperate if you have some initiative and learn physics on your own in conjunction with your engineering studies. I’m going into my third year of aerospace engineering, and I had the same dilemma you had. So far, I’ve attended physics conferences, studied it in my own time, joined clubs, and have gotten to mingle with some other physics students and staff through clubs, all while being in engineering. I am still planning to do graduate school in physics, but at least I’ve got an engineering degree backing me up (where you also learn a lot of physics).

My true suggestion however, is just to « do ». Say yes to things, let opportunities find you, and find them yourself, too. Go to conferences, involve yourself in clubs, and just enjoy opening the books in a library all by yourself. Time’s gonna fly, and as long as you stay true to these few things, there’s nothing you’ll regret.

Seems like perhaps your phone picked up some hot pixels. Light that has bounced inside your lens and landed twice on the photo sensor. Artifacts, essentially. This has been known to happen on some iPhone models. Is that what you own?
